Arlington Pet of the Week: Samantha

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Samantha, a 10-year-old corgi mix that greets her owners with a “jig” when they return from work.

Here’s what Samantha’s owner, Stephanie, said about her dancing dog:

Why should Samantha be Arlington’s pet of the week? Because she dances a jig on the edge of the front porch when my husband or I come home from work!

Samantha, a 10-year old, 24-pound corgi mix with a characteristic corgi long body, taps her stubby front legs from side-to-side as her hind quarters and cascading tail sashay in the opposite direction. Once she is petted she’ll whip around and hurtle herself through the open front door and back into the house.

Samantha is most definitely a people dog and the “greeter dance” makes our day! Although her excitement is barely contained, once inside she’ll sit at your feet and gaze up at you with kohl-rimmed eyes and several wayward eyebrow hairs asking for more petting or any other attention. Yes, Samantha is a sweet dog with a dose of — mostly adorable — neediness.

In addition to the “greeter dance,” Samantha’s favorite daily activities include, in her order of preference, snuffling for chicken bones and the occasional soggy pizza crust, among other “tasty” snacks left on the sidewalks of Washington Blvd; barking at the mailman, UPS man, and any other man or beast who dares to walk in front of the house or up the front porch steps; patrolling the fenced perimeter of our backyard for evidence of squatting rabbits; and then settling  herself queen-like into the elbow of our living room sectional to surveil her realm.
