Heat Advisory hits ArlingtonArlington County and the surrounding D.C. area is under a heat advisory today.

The National Weather Service says the worst of the heat — the heat index is currently 102 degrees — is happening in mid-to-late afternoon.

From NWS:

HEAT ADVISORY FROM 12PM EDT THU UNTIL 8PM EDT THU

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BALTIMORE MD/WASHINGTON HAS ISSUED A HEAT ADVISORY… WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES… 100 TO 105… THE HIGHEST VALUES WILL OCCUR IN THE MID TO LATE AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS… RISK OF HEAT-RELATED ILLNESS FOR THOSE WITHOUT AIR- CONDITIONING OR THOSE OUTDOORS FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD. DO NOT LEAVE PETS IN VEHICLES TODAY – EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK, THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY – CALL 911.

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT A PERIOD OF HIGH TEMPERATURES IS EXPECTED. THE COMBINATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE.
