(Updated, 2/2/22) Girl Scout cookie sales in Arlington are back in person this year, after going mostly virtual in 2021.
Over the next several weeks, residents will be able to purchase their Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs or the newest flavor, Adventurefuls, at 15 booths across the county, according to the Girl Scouts’ Cookie Finder website. Only four locations were set up in 2021.
Booth sales start this Friday (Feb. 4) and end March 13.
Cookies will continue to be sold online as well, with the treats being shipped or delivered by Girl Scouts. Sales actually started in December, with Scouts selling to family, friends and neighbors both door-to-door and online.
Laura Loomis, part of the team that oversees cookie sales in Arlington and Alexandria, tells ARLnow they’ve already seen a 40% increase in those friends and family sales compared to last year.
She says that cookie sales are truly one of the highlights of the troops’ calendars, a chance for the kids to get out and meet people. The scouts are very excited that sales are mostly back in person this year, she said.
“So much of what the Girl Scouts do is being out in the community,” Loomis says. “It’s much more enjoyable to meet people face to face than to send an email.”
There will be restrictions in place at the booths, Loomis notes, including requiring masks and a limit of two kids and two adults per booth.
In Association 60, which encompasses Arlington and Alexandria, there are about 305 troops and 3,085 kids. The sales are a huge fundraiser for the Girl Scouts, with 85 cents from each box going to the troops.
The D.C. area regional branch of the Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts of Nation’s Capital, has set a goal this year of selling more than 3.6 million cookies, according to a press release. Last year about 3 million cookies were sold.
