Arlington Pet of the Week: Sybie

Our latest Pet of the Week is Sybie, a 4-year-old Tibetan-Spaniel mix who was once used as a breeder dog at a puppy mill in South Carolina.

Her owner, Mary, talks about Sybie’s long journey to her home in Virginia.

Meet Sybie! She is an almost 4-year-old beautiful Tibetan-Spaniel mix who has come a long way since I first adopted her from the Washington Animal Rescue League. And what a tumultuous and crazy adventure it has been.

She was brought to WARL from a huge puppy mill in South Carolina, where she was used as a breeder dog for some time. When she arrived at the shelter, they gave her to a foster mother to take care of, as she was so skittish and frightened. This was how she was when I met her.

I found her picture on the WARL website around Thanksgiving, and I instantly knew that she was mine. Despite the hurdles I had to overcome to get her — namely a VERY reluctant landlord who I convinced after a very passionate argument and having to get my roommates to get on board with the idea — I was able to adopt her at the beginning of December.

Although she was extremely scared at first (I was worried as she didn’t leave her crate at all for the first day and very rarely for a month after), she has since come around to me. After one breakout attempt, a confidence training class and months of TLC by me, my mother and my parents’ very affable dog, Frodo, she is loving life in the slow lane.

The Arlington Pet of the Week is sponsored by Dogma Bakery, which has locations at The Village at Shirlington (2772 S. Arlington Mill Drive) and the Lee Harrison Shopping Center (2445 N. Harrison Street).

Want your pet to be considered to be the Arlington Pet of the Week? Email [email protected] with a 2-3 paragraph bio and 3-4 photos of your pet. Each week’s winner receives a $25 Dogma gift card.
