Enjoy the rewards of a live performance on Zoom: Jane Franklin Dance Sense of Place Rhythm and Sound, Saturday January 30, 7 p.m. Tune in to a live stream performance from the Athenaeum in Alexandria, a gallery of fine arts and performance venue. “Sense of Place” is about exploring the architecture of the historic building and reacting to both structure and limitations.
Mobile webcams follow dancers throughout the physical boundaries: a spiraling metal staircase, a closed doorway, a window facing S. Lee Street, a stairway marked ‘do not enter.’ Music is by the award-winning singer-songwriter duo Luna, Valeria Stewart and Kathleen Huber.
Michael Spears’ art exhibition, The Sight of Rhythm and Melody, inspired by R&B and Black Lives Matter, motivates dances that respond to his “Untitled” series of five paintings. Jane Franklin Dance juxtaposes dancers with five early works that generate hope and a positive message for a better tomorrow. Spears’ process is a visual response to rhythm and melody, in particular the songs of the 60’s and 70’s. A sound score merges Spears’ spoken-word descriptions with music by Future Prospect, a Richmond based band. Music from their 2016 debut album “The Climb” features saxophonist Trey Sorrells.
