Call for Nominations for 30th Annual Spirit of Community Award

Arlington Community Foundation is pleased to ask the Arlington community for nominations for the 2023 William T. Newman, Jr. Spirit of Community Award. The Award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a tireless and unselfish commitment to improving the quality of life in Arlington. Award recipients exemplify above-and-beyond servant leadership and have made extraordinary and visionary contributions to the Arlington community. Multiple honorees may be recognized each year.

Award recipients have a history of serving Arlington in a variety of ways: whether it be the arts, social justice, philanthropy, education, volunteering, civic duties, or entrepreneurship. This year’s recipient will join an exemplary roster of past honorees including Dr. Michael Silverman, Portia Clark, Mark Riley, Lucy Bowen McCauley, Dr. Alfred Taylor Jr., Emma Violand-Sánchez, Joan Cooper, and the Honorable George D. Varoutsos, among many others.

This year’s honoree(s) will be recognized at the Spirit of Community Awards and Luncheon on November 17: the annual event bringing together hundreds of business, civic, and philanthropic leaders, as well as Arlingtonians from all walks of life, for a celebration of community and the individuals who have made Arlington a better home for all of us.

Latinas Leading Tomorrow’s mission is to connect and expose Latinas to opportunities that enrich their futures through education, mentoring, and leadership development.

The Reach the Stars 5K Event serves as a primary fundraiser to support our three main programs:

-CORE: Afterschool program for high-schoolers that cultivates cultural identity, understanding, leadership development, academic excellence, governance, community service, and mentorship.

-ELITE: Virtual program that transforms the current unequal power structures and elevates the new generation of Latina leaders to prepare them for college and the career world.

Latina Labs: Hands-on activities for middle school girls with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM).

Dana Laidhold, Nancy McEldowney, and Carmen C. Oviedo join Arlington Community Foundation Board

Arlington Community Foundation is pleased to welcome three new trustees to the Board for fiscal year 2024: Dana Laidhold, Nancy Eileen McEldowney, and Carmen C. Oviedo. These new board members bring highly distinguished and diverse perspectives in business, finance, and community impact to the work of the Community Foundation at an exciting time in its evolution. The Foundation is embarking on a strategic planning process to serve as a roadmap for deeper and broader engagement in meeting the needs of the community.

Dana Laidhold serves as Senior Vice President and Treasurer at Nasdaq. With more than 25 years of experience in capital markets, foreign exchange, investing, cash management, insurance and treasury technologies, she leads a global team of treasury and tax professionals. In 2020, her Treasury team was a finalist for the Pinnacle Award for excellence in treasury and finance. In 2015, Dana received the Highly Commendable distinction as Woman of the Year at the Adam Smith Awards. Dana is also on the board of the Nasdaq Foundation.

Nancy Eileen McEldowney is an academic and diplomat who served as the national security advisor to Vice President Kamala Harris during 2021 and 2022. She previously served as United States ambassador to Bulgaria, Interim President and Senior Vice President of the National Defense University, and Director of the Foreign Service Institute, among many other foreign affairs distinctions. She has been granted the State Department’s Superior Honor Award on five occasions. She is also the recipient of the Sinclair Linguistic Award and of the Chairman of the Joint Chief’s Joint Distinguished Civilian Service Award.

Carmen C. Oviedo is Founding Partner of Stanton Blackwell. Before founding Stanton Blackwell, Carmen was Senior Vice President and Executive Committee member of Delta Career Education Corporation. She held multiple positions at Fannie Mae serving as Chief of Staff to the CEO and leading regulatory affairs. Carmen began her career in business development at the Corporate Executive Board after spending several years on Capitol Hill. With a passion for community development, Carmen served as a Board President for Doorways for Women and Families in Arlington and is a former board member of Dress for Success in Washington, DC.

The Foundation would also like to thank John Andelin, who is retiring from the Board of Trustees, for his many years of dedicated service and leadership. He will continue to serve on the Foundation’s scholarship committee. Tanja Castro will serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees. Together, current and new Trustees alike are poised to elevate the Foundation’s initiatives and services to new heights, fostering an even stronger and more vibrant Arlington for all.

Summer is in full swing at Art House 7, and we’re excited to announce our incredible new lineup of August classes, workshops, camps, and more!

Starting August 7, join our four-week ceramics classes. Discover the joy of pottery throwing in our wheel classes and unleash your imagination with our sculpture classes. Experienced ceramicists and students can explore individually at our ceramics Open Studios on July 14, 21, and 28.

New Ceramic Sculpture camps are available for aspiring sculptors aged 12-17 during weeks 7 and 8. There’s also a three-day camp from August 23-25 for 10-12-year-olds! There are still limited spaces for our themed summer camps in weeks 5, 6, and 7.

Embark on creative adventures with our all-new Art Club! Sessions are available on Tuesdays and Fridays from August 8-22 for different age groups from K-6th grade.

Mark your calendars for our upcoming events! Join Adult Art Nights featuring linocut printmaking on July 15, wire wrapping earrings and pendants on August 11, and ceramic house numbers and name plaques on August 25. The event will highlight local dog services and a portion of funds received will go to Warrior Canine Connection.

We will capture some amazing pics of your pets during a 10-minute session. You can also join in.

We require a $25 deposit to hold your space. This can be used towards your purchase yet is non-refundable if you miss your time slot.
