If you are interested in improving pedestrian and cyclists’ safety on Arlington’s streets just let us know and we can put you on our mailing list. Arlington Families for Safe Streets (Arl FSS) is a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. We do not ask anyone for dues, only moral support or volunteer time from our “members”.

We have monthly meetings and publish the meeting’s notes so people can be informed about the different pedestrian safety educational programs we do throughout the year as well as about the advocacy work we do with County and State Legislative Policymakers to improve traffic laws and/or improve street engineering changes to slow drivers down and reduce the risk of pedestrian fatalities. Speed kills and too many of us are driving too fast these days. Even though traffic volume is down in this COVID-19 world, pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries are up in 2020.

Although we considered not doing our annual holiday poem due to the horrendous impact the pandemic has had on the arts, we decided that the shutdown made it even more important to offer an entertaining tribute to our Arlington artists and arts organizations.

(Sung to the tune of “My Favorite Things”)

Sondheim plays at Sig, and TAP musicals
Local artists’ art, edgy Avant Bard
Synetic movement up on the stage
These are a few of my favorite things

The Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization set an ambitious goal of $20,000 for their end of year fundraising campaign. With nearly $9,000 raised so far, they are still in need of donations to continue their important programs to support area businesses continuing to feel the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic.

“With vaccines on the way, we are starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel,” says CPRO Executive Director Kim Klingler. “But our business community will still need support for several more months.” The funds raised will be used to support the business community along Columbia Pike with initiatives such as direct consultations, help with grant applications, technical assistance, workshops and continued work advocating for the businesses needs with Arlington County.

(This Community Post was written by Arlington Philharmonic: Crescendo and underwritten by Embracing Arlington Arts.)

Since September, Crescendo has been meeting virtually each Monday for interactive coaching, conversation and collaboration. Although quite different from traditional meetings — usually four youth musicians form a string quartet and rehearse with a coach each week in preparation for live performances — the content online has been an engaging, elevated musical experience that the twenty-seven members in grades 7-12 look forward to every week.

The virtual performance premieres on Arlington Philharmonic’s YouTube Channel on December 15, and is a montage of the eight different string quartets performing the first movement of Mendelssohn’s triumphant String Quartet 3 in D Major, all separately recorded from their homes. The video is artfully compiled by Matt Richardson, a violinist with 9th Street Quartet, Crescendo’s Quartet-in-Residence.

This 90-minute experiential workshop provides you with a laboratory to explore how you perceive unconscious bias.

Lorne explains the brain science of unconscious bias and guides you through several hands-on exercises. You will learn and practice techniques designed to reduce bias and help you make better choices.

Decision-making research demonstrates that individuals who are highly aware of their decision-making process can see how unconscious bias influences their thinking. This awareness opens their mind to a broader set of choices and improves their ability to reach their intended outcomes.

In this workshop, you will uncover your unconscious biases and understand the unconscious influences limiting your decision-making. Lorne Epstein has been an HR professional since 1996. His book, “You’re Hired! Interview Skills to Get the Job,” has been downloaded over a half-million times worldwide. Since 1993 Lorne has been developing and leading experiential workshops. Prologue Theatre is offering the community a unique opportunity for a glimpse into the workshop process with its virtual program FOREWORD: A New Works Series. Each play in the series receives a two-week intensive virtual workshop, a critical part of new play development, during which playwrights are paired with a director, actors and stage manager whose artistic talents help enhance the work.

Starting conversations is at the center of Prologue Theatre’s mission, so they have designed a series of conversations to pair with each of the monthly new play workshops.
