Naked Man Walking Down the Middle of Columbia Pike Arrested

A man walking naked down the middle of Columbia Pike was arrested “without incident” Saturday evening.

Arlington County Police say they were dispatched to the 2400 block of Columbia Pike just after 5:30 p.m. A photo posted to the ARLnow.com comment section over the weekend (above) shows an officer with a Taser walking behind the man on the 3000 block of Columbia Pike, near the Days Inn and the McDonald’s.

Police suggested the man may have been suffering mental health issues. He was transported under police custody to Virginia Hospital Center.

At approximately 5:37 p.m. on July 29, police were dispatched to the 2400 block of Columbia Pike for the report of a male walking in the road naked. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the subject and took him into custody without incident. The subject was transported to Virginia Hospital Center on an emergency custody order. Arlington County Department of Human Services was notified.

Texas Murder Suspect Arrested in Arlington — A suspected MS-13 gang member, wanted for two Houston-area homicides, was arrested in Arlington on Saturday. Twenty-year-old Douglas Alexander Herrera-Hernandez, also known as “Terror,” was taken into custody while walking near the intersection of Columbia Pike and Four Mile Run Drive. [Fox 5, WTOP]

Family of Murder Victim Donates Reward Funds — The family of an Iraq war vet shot to death in front of the Pentagon Row shopping center in 2006 has donated $5,000 in unclaimed reward money to Arlington Crime Solvers. “Despite an intensive investigation, a suspect and motive have not been identified,” said Arlington County Police. “This case remains an active cold case investigation.” [NBC Washington, WJLA, Twitter]

Some Arlingtonians Pay to Attend D.C. Public Schools — A handful of Arlington residents pay tuition for their children to attend D.C. public schools. Most are paying for enrollment in the renowned Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Northwest Washington. Arlington, which is still facing a school capacity crunch, does not allow nonresident students as does D.C., Fairfax County and Montgomery County. [Washington Post]

APS May Buy Home Next to Glebe Elementary — The Arlington School Board is considering buying a home next to Glebe Elementary School for $525,000 to provide emergency vehicles another point of access to the school. The home was recently sold to an investment firm for just over $400,000 this past January. [InsideNova]

Another Flash Flood Warning Issued for Arlington

If you are reading this just after midnight on Saturday, it might be because your phone just buzzed mercilessly to alert you to a new Flash Flood Warning.

The National Weather Service issued the warning for all but the northernmost tip of Arlington. It is in effect through 3 a.m.

Another round of very heavy rain is making its way through Arlington and surrounding communities and forecasters say that flash flooding “is expected to begin shortly.”

Bowl’d in Clarendon Is Closing

Healthy fast-casual eatery Bowl’d is closing, the restaurant announced via Facebook Friday evening.

Bowl’d opened in March 2015 at 1028 N. Garfield Street, in Clarendon, two blocks off the main Clarendon Blvd drag. It served gluten-free rice and salad bowls, plus fruit juice and smoothies among other options.

Video: Raging Rapids Along Four Mile Run

Today’s heavy rain has turned Four Mile Run into a raging torrent of murky water.

A Columbia Pike resident posted videos of the overflowing stream on Twitter this afternoon (Friday). The video was taken near S. George Mason Drive.

No major flooding problems were reported during the daytime Friday in Arlington, though forecasters warn that more rain may cause additional problems tonight.

There have, however, been scattered weather-related issues reported. A number of traffic signals have started flashing or gone dark and, as of 6:30 p.m., 165 Dominion customers were without power.

On N. Troy Street near Rosslyn, between Key Blvd and Wilson Blvd, a large tree fell on cars and power lines, according to scanner reports.

Shirlington Bus Stop Busted By Errant Driver

A bus stop, fire hydrant and sign were damaged by an errant driver in the Shirlington area this past Saturday evening.

The fire department tweeted a photo of the damage Monday, with a skull-and-crossbones above the fallen hydrant, urging drivers to “keep your wheels on the road and save our hydrants!”

Arlington County Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Savage said the driver of the striking vehicle — a Nissan Altima — was cited for the crash.

“At approximately 7:11 p.m. on July 22, police responded to a single vehicle crash in the 2500 block of S. Arlington Mill Drive,” said Savage. “The driver was traveling eastbound on S. Arlington Mill Drive when the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a bus stop, fire hydrant and light pole. The driver was cited for failure to maintain proper control of their vehicle.”

So far, there’s no exact timeframe or cost estimate for repairs.

“The bus stop is on the schedule to be fixed as soon as possible,” said Dept. of Environmental Services spokeswoman Jessica Baxter. “Crews will have to get in there and assess the damage to determine cost and timeline for repair.”

Flash Flood Warning Issued for Arlington

Updated at 6:25 p.m. — The National Weather Service is warning of a continued threat of very heavy rainfall and flooding tonight.

Update at 3:20 p.m. — A new Flash Flood Warning has been issued for southern portions of Arlington.

Earlier: The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Arlington, warning that flooding is “imminent” due to very heavy rain.

The Flash Flood Warning covers southern Arlington County, Falls Church, Alexandria, central Fairfax County and Fairfax city.
