Backbeat FIT headphonesIf you’re still using headphones with wires and a jack that would fit a 1990s Walkman, now is the time to upgrade.

Especially for those who enjoy listening to music while exercising, working in the yard to getting household chores done, wireless Bluetooth headphones are liberating — no more being tethered to your device, no more adjusting or clipping cords.

Making this upgrade even more timely, it’s widely reported that the next Apple iPhone — due out in September — will get rid of the ubiquitous 3.5mm headphone jack.

There are already grumbles about this move, but remember when Apple left floppy disk drives out of the iMac or DVD drives out of MacBooks? Don’t doubt Apple’s ability to move entire industries away from outmoded standards.

Yes, iPhone buyers will still be able to use a pair of wired Lightning port-connected headphones. That will likely include opposite ends of the user spectrum: those who are fine with the free, included Apple earbuds and, on the other side, hardcore audiophiles who want to spend hundreds of dollars for the very best audio quality.

For those in the middle, Bluetooth will likely be the way to go. And in our opinion, the Plantronics BackBeat Fit are your best bet.

We’ve tested the Backbeat Fit for the past few months and have found little to complain about. They’re perfect for running, biking, working out at the gym; for walking the dog, doing dishes or just sitting around the house. Best of all, they’re durable, practical and sound great.

Here is our full review.

PROS

  • Great audio quality. It’s not top of the line in terms of audio fidelity, but most won’t be left wanting. Rich, crisp sound for music, podcasts, etc.
  • Lightweight and portable. Easy to bring with you, no tangled cords.
  • Built for working out. Everybody’s ears are different, but these fit us well and feel secure even during vigorous exercise. We like the thicker band that connects the left and right earbuds over similar offerings that are connected by a less durable wire. Plus, the BackBeat Fit has excellent water resistance and has kept working through long workouts on hot days and runs in the rain.
  • Comfort. Unlike other sport headphones, we can wear these for hours at a time without discomfort or ear fatigue. Expect it to take a day or two to get used to the fit.
  • Safety. These headphones allow you to hear the world around you, which makes them a safer pick for use on roads and sidewalks. If you’d prefer exercise-oriented headphones that do a better job in noisy environments like on planes, see the JLab Epic2 and check out Wirecutter’s review, but beware of complaints about water resistance and durability during exercise.
  • Battery life. Seven to eight hours of real-world battery life was plenty for us.

CONS

  • Bluetooth connection. This is a complaint that you’ll see in the reviews of many Bluetooth headphones. If your phone is in the wrong pocket, or behind a wall, the audio signal will start breaking up. This is a function, primarily, of the way Bluetooth works — it’s a very low power signal not designed to work from a distance. We found that keeping your phone in your right pocket, as opposed to your left pocket, makes for a much better connection with the BackBeat Fit. If you’re working out, consider putting your phone in an armband and you won’t have any connection issues.
  • Button layout. You’ll get used to it in a couple of days, but the built-in play, call, volume and power buttons on the BackBeat Fit aren’t necessarily intuitive at first.
  • Micro USB door. The door you have to open to charge the headphones requires a bit of dexterity and is clearly the weak link in terms of build quality. As long as you don’t yank it out too hard it should be fine. It does do a good job of keeping moisture out.
  • Microphone. You can take calls indoors while using the BackBeat Fit, but’ll have to give up your dreams of training for a race and taking calls at the same time. Because the microphone is next to your ear, you’ll have to speak up to be heard. We got quite a few complaints about wind noise from people on the other end of the call, making the microphone all but useless if you’re in motion.

As of July 16, 2016, the BackBeat Fit is about $75-79 on Amazon.com, depending on your choice of color. Color options include blue, green and red.

If you’d prefer larger, over-the-ear type Bluetooth headphones, see this Wirecutter review.

A car ran down an embankment and into a ravine along the Spout Run Parkway this afternoon.

The crash happened around 12:30 p.m., near a turnaround halfway between Lee Highway and the GW Parkway.

Witnesses told ARLnow.com that the driver tried to take the turnaround at a high rate of speed; her car careened across the eastbound lanes of the parkway and into the woods, taking down at least one tree and winding up near the stream.

The driver was able to get out of the car on her own and is expected to be okay. As of 1 p.m. towing crews and U.S. Park Police were still in the process of removing the car from the woods. The car was barely visible from the road due to thick foliage.

Earlier this month, Arlington Public Schools relaunched its website with an updated design and new technology.

There are still some minor bugs evident — many older links to specific pages on the site are not working — but for the most part the transition appears to be complete.

Here’s what APS said about the relaunch, in a press release.

The multi-year redesign will relaunch the APS website with improved functionality and technological integration for the future.

After a rigorous search, APS selected local vendor Materiell to custom-build the new website using the WordPress platform, which was chosen for its adaptability to new technology, and its potential for future development as an open-source platform.

APS invited staff, families and the community to provide feedback in three rounds of user testing over the past year; the most recent was completed mid- April. Their comments and suggestions have been incorporated into the site functionality and design

When the site launches, it will feature:

  • an intuitive user interface
  • seamless integration with our back-end systems
  • improved video and social media integration
  • an elegant new design

Among other features, the APS homepage now includes academic highlights from the previous school year at the bottom of the page.

Arlington National Cemetery by SchlickwShould cyclists be allowed to ride through Arlington National Cemetery if they’re not there specifically to visit a departed loved one?

Currently, cyclists are allowed to use a specific route through the cemetery, a route that’s mostly used by bike commuters heading to D.C. However, that may soon change.

As reported two weeks ago on the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling blog, the Army is considering new regulations that would ban bicycling through national military cemeteries except for those visiting gravesites or niches. That has cyclists who use the Arlington National route writing to oppose the regulations.

The recent uproar over those playing Pokemon Go at Arlington National Cemetery suggests that among the general public there is still a special reverence for the cemetery’s hallowed grounds. Does that extend to those quietly bicycling through the cemetery?

County Still Seeking Private Money for Aquatics Center — Arlington County is still looking for private partners and sponsorships before moving forward on construction of the Long Bridge Park aquatics center. It’s unclear if additional private money would be used to expand the center or reduce the estimated $40-44 million in taxpayer funding. Even without additional money, park bonds already approved by voters are expected to fully fund construction. [InsideNova]

Just Listed highlights Arlington properties that just came on the market within the past week. This feature is written and sponsored by Team Cathell, “Your Orange Line Specialists.”

Arlington’s real estate market bounced back this week with a surge of fresh inventory and increase in number of homes sold.  Some 75 new listings came on the market, while 63 homes went under contract.  Buyers were busy snatching up last week’s inventory in record time, dropping the average days on market to only 34.

Mortgage rates also dropped to a 3-year low this week and then stabilized.  Economists expect these low rates to remain unchanged for the summer. Freddie Mac reports the average national rate for a 30-yr fixed rate mortgage is just 3.47%. These record low rates have caused a spike in loan applications, up 66% from a year ago. Some two-thirds of those applications are for refinance.  We should see Arlington buyers this summer taking advantage of the low rates and boosting sales above the normal slow summer pace.

Remember that weird costumed Pokemon thing taking place near the Clarendon Metro station Tuesday afternoon?

Well, they were filming a YouTube video and one of the creators, Cabot Phillips, tweeted the finished product to us last night. This morning he explained some of the story behind the video.

The video, above, is entitled “Pokemon Go in Real Life Prank.”

You might have seen the work of the Phillips siblings before. Earlier this year they scored a national viral hit with a video in which they convince their sister, who just had wisdom teeth surgery, that they were in the midst of a zombie apocalypse.

Police car lightsArlington County Police have made a major drug bust in the Clarendon area.

Nine people have been charged, accused of being part of a drug network that distributed marijuana, MDMA and cocaine in the neighborhood.

A tenth person was arrested and charged with making death threat against undercover officers.

From an ACPD press release:

Detectives assigned to the Arlington County Police Department Organized Crime Section – Vice / Drug Enforcement Unit and the Virginia State Police recently concluded a 7-month undercover investigation focused on drug distribution activity in the Clarendon area of Arlington County. In addition, after the initial phase of arrests were completed, the involved undercover officers began to receive death threats and threats of severe bodily harm. The threats were very graphic. He is being held in the Arlington County Detention Facility.
