Question: Where are the best private views of 4th of July fireworks in Arlington?

Answer: Pointing out July 4th firework views during showings is a habit of mine that out-of-towners always find amusing until they’ve lived here for a year or two and realize how obsessive we get about our neighborhood/building views come 9 p.m. July 4th.

As a long-term Rosslyn resident without a private view, I’ve always enjoyed them with the crowds by the Iwo Jima Memorial, but this year with a 7-month old at home, I’ll be watching (possibly re-runs) on TV.

If only I could be home with my son AND watch the fireworks from the comfort of my balcony or rooftop (hint: see below)!

I would love if readers shared in the comments section some of their favorite public places to take in the show! Especially neighborhood spots that don’t require fighting traffic and arriving hours early.

For the true National Mall July 4th firework lover, I put together a list of homes currently for sale with the closest, most direct views of fireworks (you’ll have to compromise for simply great views the other 364 days of the year).

The Best Private Firework Views

The best available private views go to The Weslie and Prospect House, perched above the Iwo Jima Memorial and Netherlands Carillion, all with balconies large enough for a party that offer you a front-row seat to see and hear the fireworks.

With one unit on the market at the Weslie (picture to the right) and eight at Prospect House ranging from $599,000 to $1,325,000, there’s something for every firework lover… as long as you can stomach the high condo fees.

Crystal City also jumps into the mix with a few buildings along Crystal Dr. with large balconies, many facing the National Mall.

However, you’ll be a bit further away which may favor those who like to see, not hear, the fireworks.

The two units currently on market are modestly priced at $535,000 and $779,00, each with two bedrooms.

It wouldn’t be right to finish this section without acknowledging the best-in-class private views available at the magnificent Monument Place townhouses across the street from the Iwo Jima Memorial.

These large, luxury townhouses each have massive rooftops with views into DC that will never be obstructed.

Outside of the being President or owning a select few Georgetown/Foggy Bottom residences, I’m not sure you’ll find anything that rivals this amount of private space with front-row views of the National Mall. Personally, I think this is some of the most undervalued property in the DC area.

Unfortunately, there is nothing actively for sale right now, but 1400 Meade St. N. is presumably still for sale although technically withdrawn from the market as of May 2018.

The owner combined two homes into one massive 6,000+ sq. ft. masterpiece. Four-car garage? Check! Staff quarters? Check! Home theater? Check! Spa? Check! Although measurements are available, I believe the total rooftop space is around 1,500-2,000 sq. ft..

With a $900,000 price reduction, you’ll pay $3,595,000 for the right to host the most sought-after Fourth of July party in D.C.! I’m anxiously awaiting my 2019 invitation…

The Best Semi-Private Firework Views

By Maryland homicide lawyer Kush Arora with Price Benowitz, LLP.

The 16-year-old suspect in the death of Baltimore County Officer First Class Amy Caprio was ordered to be held without bail by a local judge. The judge, ordering Dawnta Anthony Harris of Baltimore be held without bail called the teen “a one-man crime wave.”

The body camera Officer Caprio was wearing during the incident shows Harris accelerating a stolen Jeep he was driving as he approached the officer in a cul-de-sac. Officer Caprio was responding to the report of a suspicious vehicle in the cul-de-sac when the incident occurred.

The suspect held in the death of the officer was waiting in the Jeep as three others were burglarizing a home in the Perry Hall community, which is just northeast of Baltimore. According to officials from Baltimore County, three other teens have also been taken into custody in relation to the case.

As Officer Caprio attempted to get Harris to exit the vehicle he sped up and ran over her. The police have not confirmed Officer Caprio’s cause of death but witnesses claimed they heard a popping sound prior to the officer being run over by the Jeep. A brother of a witness, who is a local volunteer firefighter, ran out of his home and began giving Officer Caprio CPR.

Other residents of the neighborhood said they heard Officer Caprio scream, “Get out of the car,” three times before hearing a pop. Another neighbor also ran from her home and helped in attempts to resuscitate Officer Caprio, who would have celebrated her four-year anniversary on the force this coming July.

The death of Officer Caprio was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner assigned to the case. The medical examiner said that Officer Caprio died from trauma to the torso and to the head. They also noted that there were no gunshot injuries on Officer Caprio’s body.

Harris has been charged as an adult with first-degree homicide. The identities of the three other teens arrested in connection with the incident have not been released and it is not yet clear how the three teens will be charged.

“Crimes involving juveniles are intricate and can become even more complex when the juvenile is charged as an adult,” Kush Arora, a Montgomery County criminal defense attorney, said.

Severance agreements are agreements that compensate an employee in exchange for their departure from an employment position.

Most employees are considered “at will,” which means they can resign and/or be terminated at any time. When employment ends, an employer may offer a severance package to an employee in exchange for the employee’s waiver of right to sue.

However, employers, in the absence of an employment contract, generally have no obligation to provide employees severance pay. If severance pay is offered, an employer will offer the employee a Severance Agreement.

Severance Agreements

A Severance Agreement is a contract between an employee and an employer that specifies the terms of an employment termination. Severance Agreements are also offered to employees who are laid off or facing retirement.

In addition, depending on the circumstances, a Severance Agreement may be offered to an employee who resigns or is terminated. The Severance Agreement must have consideration — i.e., something of value to which the employee is not already entitled.

Employers are usually required to provide an employee time to consider the Severance Agreement before signing. An employee typically has a 21-day consideration period to accept an employer’s Severance Agreement unless the employee is over 40 years of age.

The Older Workers Benefit Protection Act (OWBPA) requires that an employer provide employees over 40 years of age with a 45-day consideration period and at least a 7-day revocation period.

There are various ways that Severance Agreements are used:

  • An employee is terminated and the employer then offers a Severance Agreement;
  • An employee has been terminated, no Severance Agreement was proposed by the employer but the employee approaches the employer seeking one; or
  • An employee wants to resign and seeks to negotiate severance.

Some of the issues to consider in a Settlement Agreement may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Financial terms
  • Tax consequences and timing of severance payments
  • Confidentiality
  • Continuation of employment benefits
  • Rights to unemployment compensation
  • Release of Claims
  • Non-Disparagement
  • Re-employment possibilities
  • Scope of non-competition
  • Preservation of trade secrets
  • References
  • Recommendation letters
  • Applicable law
  • Consequences of violating the Severance Agreement

Severance Agreements often include a General Release (Waiver) that stipulates the employee cannot sue his or her employer for wrongful termination or attempt to seek unemployment benefits.

Before an employee signs a Severance Agreement, he or she should consult with an attorney to discuss the rights that he or she may be waiving and the terms of the Severance Agreement.

Conclusion

When facing a severance agreement it can be important to have the assistance and advice of counsel. In case the heat and humidity haven’t given you a clue, summer is finally here!

Time to put away your red wines and break out your whites. Yes, many people like to enjoy rosés during the warmer weather (and we do, too!), but let’s not forget about the many refreshing white wines that can cool us off!

When many people think white wines, they often think of the most common three: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, or Pinot Grigio. However, did you know that there are well over 200 different white grape varietals? Today’s WWBG features two varietals that you may not have heard of, plus one that you have.

The first grape that we are featuring today is Rkatsiteli (pronounced R-cat-set-el-ee). It is originally from the country of Georgia, but is now grown all over Eastern Europe.

It is known for being zesty and tart, which makes it great for dry or sweet wines.

Stobi’s 2016 Rkatsiteli from Macedonia ($11.99) is a dry wine. It is bright with acidic flavors of lemon and grapefruit that are well balanced with green apple and spearmint. It’s acidity make it a great pairing with creamy cheeses such as blue cheese or gorgonzola. Any summer salad would be delicious with this as well!

Traveling west to Italy, we learn about our second featured grape, Verdicchio (pronounce ver-dee-ck-io). Verdicchio comes from the word verde, which is Italian for green. The wine is called “Verdicchio” due to the grape’s green color. This grape is also known for being acidic, but not as much as the Rkatsiteli.

La Staffa’s 2017 Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore (Regularly $16.99, on sale for $14.99) has a beautiful nose of Asian pear, peach, and clementines, with woodsy notes coming at the end. On the palate, there is a little zing coming from the fruit. Grilled veggies and fish were meant to go with this dish, so it will definitely be a winner at your next barbecue or cookout!

Lastly, we feature a grape that you have all heard about: Sauvignon Blanc.

However, this may be one of the most versatile grapes around! It can have a lemongrass-y, acidic taste that many people enjoy from New Zealand. It can be more tropical when coming from California. From France, it could be more floral with mineral elements to it.

The Sauvignon Blanc we are featuring today is from Oregon, which is a nice blend of Californian and French styles.

The Patricia Green Cellar’s 2016 Sauvignon Blanc from Willamette Valley, Oregon ($24.99), is unlike many Sauvignon Blancs that you have had before. The smell alone is full of tropical notes like pineapple, mango, and lychee. However, there is also something that will leave you curious to try more. It is an herb? Is it hay? Is it floral? Grab some next time you are in the shop and figure it out with us! It will go perfectly with your next grilled chicken or sushi!

Just Listed highlights Arlington properties that just came on the market within the past week. This feature is written and sponsored by Team Cathell, “Your Orange Line Specialists.”

Arlington had another good week of summertime real estate activity with 91 new listings and 70 homes sold. That’s an excellent pace as we head into the July 4th holiday weekend. Typically, sales and listings drop significantly after July 4 as summer vacationing hits its peak. Beaches and pools take a priority over looking for a new home.

Arlington statistics are steady so far with an average 32 days on market and inventory standing at 1.9 months of supply.

Buyers got good news this week as interest rates dipped a little as capital moved out of stocks and into US 10-year treasury bonds. The Dow Jones Industrial Average index has dropped the last few weeks as the Trump Administrations trade war continues to create financial and economic jitters. The Dow is down about 1.9% year to date.

The 30-yr fixed rate mortgage is now about 4.65%-4.75%. It’s a great time for buyers to ratify a contract and lock in an interest rate.

Click to see all the fresh new inventory in MRIS and call Team Cathell (703-975-2500) when you find a home you like.
