Northern Lights: Music by Grieg, Sibelius and Rautavaara — Sunday, Jan. 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Lyon Park Community Center (414 North Fillmore Street)

IBIS Chamber Music Society examines Nordic composers in a “Champagne & Strings” event. Warm up before the concert with a glass of champagne (or perhaps a shot of vodka?) and an informal chat with violinist Joseph Scheer about these Nordic works, including string quartets by Grieg and Sibelius, and eerily fascinating music for harp and strings by Rautavaara. Join us after the concert for a reception.

Tickets $20/10 for seniors and students. Kids under 18 are always free.

In-Person Registration for Spanish Classes — Saturday, Jan. 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Claremont Elementary School (4700 South Chesterfield Road)

On January 12, Edu-Futuro will be holding in-person registration for its Spanish classes for children and adults through its Escuela Bolivia Program for the spring semester at Claremont Elementary School.

Edu-Futuro provides Spanish classes to children and adults taught by native Spanish speakers at some of the most competitive prices in the Greater DC region. Adult classes include a beginners and intermediate course. Classes for children are from Pre- K through 8th grade.

Capitol Steps to Perform at Yorktown High

The Capitol Steps comedy troupe will perform at Yorktown High School this weekend as part of a fundraiser.

The group — which was formed when a group of Senate staffers set out to satirize their employers — has been poking fun at Washington politics for more than 30 years. They are regularly featured on National Public Radio and have made appearances on network TV.

The Steps will be performing at the Yorktown High School Auditorium (5200 Yorktown Blvd) from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 13

The group is coming to Yorktown to benefit the student productions and educational workshops of the school’s theater program. Tickets are available online for $40.

Registration Open for Mardi Gras Parade

The 15th annual Clarendon-Courthouse Mardi Gras parade is five weeks away, and registration is open for organizations and groups that want to march in the parade.

The parade — the largest in the D.C. area — will kick of at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and run up Wilson Boulevard from N. Barton Street to Washington Boulevard. The parade will be preceded by a pre-party at Bayou Bakery (1515 N. Courthouse Road) at 5:00 p.m.

Those interested in participating in the parade or volunteering as a parade marshal can now register online.

“Participating in the parade is a great way to have fun — participants can wear masks, dress completely inappropriately, and throw stuff at people,” parade organizer Clarendon Alliance said on its website. “What’s not to like?”

Fifty organizations participated in the 2012 Mardi Gras parade and the Clarendon Alliance is hoping to attract even more participants this year.

Hokies to Hold Happy Hour for Sandy Hook

A group of local Virginia Tech alumni will be holding a happy hour tomorrow (Jan. 9) to raise money for those impacted by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn.

The fundraiser will run from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. at SoBe in Clarendon (3100 Clarendon Blvd). A $10 donation will buy attendees a wristband entitling them to $2.50 domestic beers, $3.50 rail drinks, $3.50 house wine and food specials. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and DJ Antonio Ernesto will perform.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Sandy Hook Support Fund, says co-organizer Colleen Whalen.

“As a Virginia Tech alum, I know what it’s like for a community to suffer loss from a tragic event such as what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary,” Whalen said. “It was the outpouring of support from communities around the world that helped my Virginia Tech family cope with our own tragedy.”

A local company, Project DC Events, is helping Whalen organize the happy hour. Whalen said she’s trying to build on the success of a previous Virginia Tech alumni-organized fundraiser for Sandy Hook, held at Whitlow’s last month.

“It’s kind of a second push for people who were unable to attend, or were already out of town for the holidays when the first one took place,” she told ARLnow.com. “Although some of the organizers went to Virginia Tech, we are trying to promote to a larger audience, not just Hokies.”

Clarinet Capers with Julian Milkis — Saturday, Jan. 12 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. — Hailed as one of the world’s greatest living clarinetists, Julian Milkis remains the only student of Jazz Legend Benny Goodman, and has been described as a dazzling soloist, chamber musician and jazz clarinetist. Milkis will perform at Artisphere’s Spectrum Theater with members of the National Chamber Ensemble: Kathryn Brake on piano, Leo Sushansky on violin, and Uri Wassertzug on viola.

101-Year-Old Author to Talk at Arlington Public Library

At 101 years old, Arlington resident Martha Ann Miller has done and seen many things.

She met President Calvin Coolidge. She helped with the desegregation of Arlington Public Schools. She authored an autobiography. And now she’s scheduled to discuss that autobiography, The First Century: And Not Ready for the Rocking Chair Yet,” at Arlington Central Library (1015 N. Quincy Street).

Miller will be holding an author event at the library’s auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.

“Hear her look back on Arlington over the decades, as well as the inside story of how Arlington became the first district in Virginia to desegregate its schools and her role in that moment in history,” the library said of the program. The event is co-sponsored by the Arlington branch of the American Association of University Women.

This isn’t the only library-related news Miller has made recently. In 2011 she received an award from Arlington Public Library Director Diane Kresh in recognition of her being a centenarian user of the library’s Talking Books service.

Arlington to Host Annual MLK Tribute

(Updated at 10:05 a.m. on 1/17/13) Arlington County will host its 44th Annual Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, Jan. 20.

The event is being held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Washington-Lee High School (1301 N. Stafford Street). It will feature live music and dance, spoken word, a volunteer fair, and an “Arlington During the Civil Rights Era” photo gallery.

The keynote speaker will be Lehigh University Professor and Hip Hop Scholars, LLC founder James Braxton Peterson. Among the acts scheduled to perform are Grammy-nominated Progressive Hip-Hop artist Christylez Bacon and international dance collective Urban Artistry.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a federal holiday, is Monday, Jan. 21.

‘Top Model’ Tryouts to Be Held at Pentagon City Mall

Local TV station DC50 will be holding auditions for the CW show America’s Next Top Model at the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City on Saturday (Jan. 5).

The auditions will take place at the mall from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Previously only open to women, this latest round of tryouts are open to both men and women, between the ages of 18 and 27. A list of eligibility requirements and a required 100+ question application are both available via the DC50 website.

The auditions will be followed by a private screening for the new show The Carrie Diaries, a “prequel” to the hit HBO show Sex and the City. The screening will take place at 5:00 p.m.; interested viewers must register online.

Capitals Still Locked Out, but Kettler Hosts Yorktown Hockey

The Capitals’ season may be in shambles due to the ongoing NHL lockout, but all is not lost for fans wishing to take in some hockey. The Yorktown High School hockey team is playing a home game at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex (627 N. Glebe Road) in Ballston on Friday.

The Yorktown Ice Hockey Club has been in existence since 2003. The team has not been granted sports team status at the school, but is instead considered an “interest club.” It’s part of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League, which is the premier high school level league in Northern Virginia, and was bumped up from junior varsity to varsity this year.

One of the coaches boasted to ARLnow.com about having the league’s leading goal scorer on his team. Cameron Smith has scored 17 goals in three games, including a record-setting 11 in one game. So far this year, the team is 2-2.

Friday’s game against Broad Run High School begins at 6:40 p.m. at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in the Ballston Mall. It’s free to attend.

After this Friday, there will be two more Yorktown home games at Kettler. The team will play Osbourne Park at 6:40 p.m. on Friday, January 4, and Madison on Friday, February 8.

National Chamber Ensemble’s Annual Holiday Concert — Dec. 16 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. — The National Chamber Ensemble (NCE) celebrates the spirit of the holiday season on Sunday, December 16 with a show for the whole family. The performance will feature great music, an international guest artist and outstanding young musicians. An annual tradition, the concert will include seasonal favorites like Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride”, a Hanukkah Medley and more. The event will take place at the Spectrum Theatre at Artisphere (1611 N. Kent Street).
