The church offers its 13th annual Thanksgiving Day 5K. Tickets are $45 for anyone age 18 and over. For anyone 6-17, tickets are $25. Over the past 12 years, the race registrants and business sponsors have raised over $600,000 to help Arlington residents who need a “hand up.”

Friday, Nov. 23

Wolfenoot Adoption Party
Animal Welfare League of Arlington (2650 S. Arlington Mill Drive)

Wolfenoot is a brand new holiday being celebrated across the world. It was recently invented by a seven-year-old boy in New Zealand, who wanted to create a holiday that celebrated dogs (and all animals) and those who love them. Offerings include ‘Name Your Price’ adoption fees for all animals, a donation drive and family friendly activities.

Handel’s Messiah Sing-Along

The 47th Annual Messiah’s Sing-Along at Clarendon UMC with guest conductor, Richard Giarusso. Soloist and orchestra lead Part I Handels Messiah. Scores are provided and a reception follows. Free entry.

Comedians from hit TV shows and movies are coming to Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike) over the next month.

Aasif Mandvi from The Daily Show is set to perform mid-December. He joins a lineup of comedians featuring Darrell Hammond, one of the longest running cast members on Saturday Night Live, and Bobby Lee from Chelsea Lately. 

The Drafthouse schedule includes:

  • Natasha Leggero of Comedy Central and He’s Just Not That Into You (Nov. 16-17)
  • Alonzo Bodden of Last Comic Standing and Scary Movie 4 (Nov. 23-24)

In addition to the stellar comedy lineup, the Drafthouse is holding a holiday-themed cartoon viewing event for grown-ups. The “Spoons, Toons & Booze Christmas Special” will offer holiday-themed episodes of popular Saturday morning cartoon series along with boozy beverages and an all-you-can-eat cereal bar.

Audience members are encouraged to dress in their “ugliest holiday sweater or coziest PJs” for photos with Santa Claus. They also can compete in contests to choose what to watch from the selection of more than 100 cartoon series from the 1940s to early 2000s. The event is scheduled for noon Dec. 8-9. Tickets are $15.

For even more Christmas cheer, an all-day movie festival on Dec. 16 will show half of a dozen holiday favorites.

The Rhodeside Grill near Courthouse is gearing up to celebrate the biggest college football game of the year, so far, with a watch party and shrimp boil.

The restaurant, located at 1836 Wilson Blvd, is planning to celebrate LSU’s clash with Alabama Saturday night (Nov. 3) in traditional southern fashion, according to a news release.

The spread will include plenty of shrimp, corn on the cob, Andouille sausage and red potatoes. The grill plans to prepare the boil outdoors and spread it “across a large, newspaper-covered community table before being served,” according to the release.

The bar will also offer up specialty cocktails to commemorate each team with “Tiger Claws” and “Alabama Slammers” up for grabs, in addition to beer specials.

The party will start around 6 p.m. ahead of the game’s 8 p.m. kickoff, which the bar will show with sound on both floors.

Guests can pay $14 for a small portion or $20 for a large. Anyone looking to reserve a table can do so by calling the Rhodeside Grill at 703-243-015.

Expect road closures along Campbell Avenue in Shirlington tomorrow (Saturday) for the fifth annual Samuel Beckett’s Celtic Festival.

From 8 a.m.-8 p.m., the street will be closed from S. Randolph Street to the parking garage entrance in front of the Shirlington Harris Teeter.

The event itself runs from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Live music, as well as bagpipes, is scheduled both inside and outside Samuel Beckett’s Irish Gastro Pub (2800 S. Randolph Street).

After 7 p.m., the party is scheduled to continue inside the pub with a band performing from 9:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. Irish food and drink vendors will be located along Campbell Avenue.

Street parking during the festival will also be restricted. Motorists are encouraged to park in the Randolph Square Parking Garage behind the pub.

Long-time DC 101 morning man Elliot Segal is bringing his Elliot in the Morning Halloween Bash back to Clarendon tomorrow (Friday).

The annual event is happening at Clarendon Ballroom (3185 Wilson Blvd), with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the party starting at 8 p.m. There’s a $10 cover before 9 p.m.

With that and other notable events planned, and with Halloween revelry starting up, the Arlington County Police Department was going to hold a “Halloween Anti-Drunk Driving Community Outreach Event” in Clarendon Friday evening. That, however, has been postponed due to expected rainy weather.

ACPD is now planning to hold an Election Day-themed anti-DUI event next Friday, Nov. 2, from 9-11 p.m.

Before You File: Everything You Need to Know About the New Tax Law

Encore Stage & Studio 3rd Annual Costume Caper 5K & 1K Fun Run*

Encore Stage and Studio invites families and community members on a run along the W&OD trail. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. Online registration for the 5K is $30 in advance or $35 for registration the day of the race. The 1K Fun Run for kids ages 10 or under is $10.

A Cappella Barbershop Harmony Show*

The Arlingtones annual show returns with all the barbershop classics. This year features the 2016 national youth quartet champions Pratt Street Power as a special guest. Admission is $15 for adults or $10 for students with an ID. Tickets are available online or at the door.

Sunday, Oct. 28

Installation of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church’s New Rector*

The church will host “A Celebration of New Ministry,” a special afternoon worship service marking the arrival of its new rector, Rev. Dorota Pruski. The service is open to the public and a reception will follow.

Del. Patrick Hope (D) will be hosting a town hall helping Arlingtonians understand Virginia’s new Medicaid expansion this On Friday, Oct. 26.

Hope is expected be joined at the town hall by Dr. Jennifer Lee, director of the Department of Medical Assistance Services, who will help explain who qualifies under the new regulations.

Many Virginians currently ineligible for Medicaid may be qualified under the new expansion. Childless adults were previously ineligible for Medicaid in Virginia, but those with an annual income at or below $16,754 may be eligible under the new regulations.

Eligibility for parents has been raised from those with an income at or below $6,900 to $28,677. Eligibility for people with disabilities has been raised from those earning $9,700 or below to $16,754.

An eligibility screening tool is available online to help Virginians discover if they can be covered by the new Medicaid expansion.

Applications to the state’s expanded Medicaid program can be filed beginning Nov. 2.

The meeting is scheduled for 2-4 p.m in the lower level auditorium of the Arlington County Department of Human Services (2100 Washington Blvd).


Break out the dice; it’s board game convention time at the Arlington Public Library.

Demand for the library’s board game collection has led the library to host Tabletop Gaming Day on Nov. 4 at the Arlington Central Library. The board game extravaganza will run from 1-5 p.m.

All ages and experience levels are welcome to Board Game Day. For those who may be new to certain games, staff and volunteers will be ready to help teach the rules. Those with their own board games are welcome to bring them.

Attendees can also join into a raffle to win board games Pandemic Legacy: Season 2 and Codenames: Disney Family Edition donated by ThinkGeek.

The event is free, without any registration required.
