Frenetic Canadian comedian Tom Green of The Tom Green Show, Freddy Got Fingered, Road Trip and Stealing Harvard, is performing at the Drafthouse. There will be two shows apiece on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Tattoo Expo Returning to Crystal City Next Week

Thousands of tattoo enthusiasts are expected to flock to Crystal City for an annual expo next week.

The D.C. Tattoo Expo is scheduled to be held at the Crystal Gateway Marriott (1700 Jefferson Davis Highway) next Friday, Jan. 13 to Sunday, Jan. 15. This is the show’s seventh consecutive year running.

The event should attract more than 400 professional tattoo artists, including some of the celebrities from Spike’s “Ink Master” and “Tattoo Nightmares,” organizers said. Attendees can sign up to get new tattoos or just talk shop with the tattooers throughout the three-day festival.

“For our seventh year in a row, we have more vendors, more clothing, more tattoos, more craziness and more fun than ever before,” the expo website reads.

The D.C. Tattoo Expo is also set to include body piercing, tattoo competitions and the annual Miss D.C. Pin-up contest. “The Human Knot” and “Mini KISS” are also scheduled to perform.

Arlington to Hold Annual MLK Tribute Concert Jan. 15

It’s January, and that means this year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute is less than two weeks away.

The 48th annual tribute event and concert is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 15, from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Wakefield High School Auditorium at 1325 S. Dinwiddie Street.

As is the tradition, the tribute concert is free and features live music, dance and spoken word performances.

This year’s lineup of artists and musicians includes gospel singer Helen Slade, the Duke Ellington School for the Performing Arts Show Choir, Alexandria’s Kingdom Fellow Church’s Worship Without Words Mime Ministry, poet Kim B. Miller and several other local performers.

The program will also “acknowledge the current social and political climate while motivating and uplifting attendees with words of inspiration and praise,” organizers said.

Those interested in attending must reserve free tickets in advance of the performance.

Malcolm Gladwell to Speak at GMU in Arlington

Best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell will be coming to Arlington for a talk with George Mason University’s Tyler Cowen next month.

The event is happening on Monday, Feb. 27, from 5-6:30 p.m. at GMU’s Founders Hall Auditorium (3351 Fairfax Drive).

Glaldwell, the author of Outliers, The Tipping Point, and Blink, among others, will “join Tyler Cowen for a wide-ranging dialogue,” according to the event’s website.

Held as part of the Mercatus Center’s “Conversations with Tyler” series, the event is open to the public and free to attend, with registration.

Beyer to Discuss ‘The Road Ahead’

Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) is inviting the public to join him in an evening of open discussion at an event he has dubbed “The Road Ahead.”

Beyer says many Arlington residents have contacted his office recently to voice concerns and to inquire about working to “bridge the great divisions that exist in our rich and complex country.”

Issues on the agenda for discussion include health care, immigration, climate change, gun safety, civil rights, and America’s role in the world, among others.

The event will take place at Wakefield High School (1325 S. Dinwiddie Street) on Monday, January 16, from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The event is free and those interested in attending may register online.

DreamWorks’ “smart, funny, irreverent” animated comedy, Trolls, will be playing at the Drafthouse on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Tickets range from $2 to $6.50. The film is rated PG.

Clarendon Chanukah Menorah Lighting*

This event at the Clarendon Metro plaza is free of charge and sponsored by Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria/Arlington. There will be a lighting of a giant six foot menorah and guests will get to enjoy hot potato latkes and chocolate gelt.

Saturday

New Year’s Eve at Osteria Da Nino*

Osteria Da Nino is celebrating the New Year with a three course dinner for just $70. Seating will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. and again from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. There will be a complimentary Prosecco toast at midnight.

New Year’s at Twisted Vines!*

Gulf Branch Nature Center to Host Solstice Eve Campfire

Arlington’s Gulf Branch Nature Center (3608 N. Military Road) is hosting a campfire tonight to ring in the winter solstice.

The event is taking place from 7-8 p.m. and will feature a fire and some wintery activities. Registration is required, according to an event listing.

“Celebrate the longest night of the year with candle making and s’mores!” says the listing. “Then we’ll take a night hike under the half moon.”

Want to stay in Arlington (or, at least, within a stone’s throw of Arlington) but still go out for New Year’s Eve?

Good news: With just over a week and a half until New Year’s Eve, there are plenty of local options still available for New Year’s procrastinators. A list of NYE parties that you can walk back from, if necessary, is below.
