Closures, Clarendon Ceremony Planned for Veterans Day

Government offices, courts, libraries and schools in Arlington County will be closed Friday for the Veterans Day holiday.

Parking meters won’t be enforced and ART buses will operate on a Saturday schedule. County-run pools will be open and trash and recycling collection will proceed as normal, however.

On Friday at 1 p.m., an annual Veterans Day ceremony will be held in Clarendon.

Arlington American Legion Post 139 is holding a ceremony at 1 p.m. at the War Memorial in Clarendon Central Park at Clarendon Blvd. and Wilson Blvd. The ceremony will honor current service members and all veterans and remember those we have lost. There will be a special recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War honoring Vietnam era veterans.

Church to Hold Talk on Islamophobia Tonight

(Updated at 11 a.m.) It’s been planned for at least a week but the results of the election may bring renewed interest to a talk at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington tonight.

The church, at 4444 Arlington Blvd, is holding a discussion entitled “Islamophobia: Replacing Fears with Facts.” The event is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.

The Committee for Peace and Justice in Israel/Palestine (CPJIP) of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington is hosting a talk entitled: Islamophobia: Replacing Fears with Facts, presented by Ms. Meira Neggaz, Executive Director of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), in Washington, D.C.

Neggaz will present ISPU’s groundbreaking research on Islamophobia and will lead a discussion of what each of us can do to combat discrimination against historically marginalized groups, including American Muslims.

The talk is open to the public. Congregants from the Moroccan American Muslim community and neighboring Christian and Jewish congregations are expected to attend.

Pop-Up Beer Garden Coming to Rosslyn This Week

Locals will be able to enjoy seasonal brews, food and live polka music at a plaza in Rosslyn later this week.

The Rosslyn BID is scheduled to transform the site of the forthcoming Continental Beer Garden at the corner of 19th Street and N. Moore Street into a pop-up Oktoberfest beer garden on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 4-8 p.m.

During the event, attendees can buy drinks such as Spaten Oktoberfest, Franziskaner Hefe-Weisse and glasses of wine from Continental Pool Lounge. Additionally, the Rocklands BBQ food truck will be on hand to serve barbecue.

The pop-up beer garden will also have live music from The Polka Brothers and “fun fall temporary tattoos done by a local artist,” according to the BID.

Though admission is free, all attendees must be 21 years of age or older.

Newt and Callista Gingrich to Sign Books in Clarendon

Former GOP Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich will be signing books at the Barnes and Noble in Clarendon (2800 Clarendon Blvd) this weekend.

Gingrich will be signing copies of his new political novel Treason starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22.

Speaker Gingrich will be joined by his wife, Callista, who will be signing copies of her new children’s book, Hail to the Chief.

Callista, a former House staffer, serves as president of Ballston-based Gingrich Productions. The couple lives in McLean.

Where to Watch the Presidential Debate in Arlington Tomorrow

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are set to spar in their final debate Wednesday before the election next month.

The presidential debate is slated to get showings around Arlington, including at Regal Ballston Common Stadium 12 (671 N. Glebe Road), Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike) and Barley Mac (1600 Wilson Boulevard).

At Regal, “voters, debate teams, political science classes, or regular Joes” can see the debate at 9 p.m., according to the movie theater. Complimentary tickets only are available at the box office. Small soft drinks also are free, with the purchase of popcorn.

Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse will open its doors at 8 p.m. for the debate. Admission is free.

Barley Mac will have red and blue drinks, as well as special bar snacks, starting at 9 p.m.

“This is surely an election that none of us will ever forget, so let’s toast to it and enjoy good food and good drink, regardless of unravels before our eyes,” Barley Mac says in a Facebook event post. “We won’t toast to either candidate, but we’ll toast to America!”

Zombie Fun Run

Bon Air Park will have a family friendly run with “engaging obstacles for participants of all ages and abilities” and a course for runners who are “up for a scary challenge,” according to an event post. The park also will have food, games and music. Registration will start at 10:30 a.m. The run won’t be timed.

Falloween Festival

Market Common Clarendon will put on its fourth annual Falloween Festival with children’s music, a petting zoo, face painting, pumpkin decorating and trick-or-treating. The festivities follow the Howl-O-Ween Dog Walk, which begins at 10 a.m. Costumes are encouraged for dogs and people.

National Chamber Ensemble – A Night In Vienna*
Rosslyn Spectrum Theatre (1611 N. Kent Street)
Time: 7:30-9:30 p.m.

The National Chamber Ensemble will perform music by Johannes Brahms and Franz Schubert, including Schubert’s “Die Forelle” and the “Trout Quintet,” as well as the “Piano Quartet in G Minor” by Brahms. A reception will follow the show. Musicians include David Chapman (piano), Nancy Peery Marriott (soprano), Carlos Cesar Rodriguez (piano), Leo Sushansky (violin), Uri Wassertzug (viola), Sean Neidlinger (cello) and T. Halloween Bar Crawl to Haunt Clarendon After Halloween

The annual Clarendon Halloween bar crawl will be back for another year this year, although it will be taking place after Halloween itself.

Halloween is on Monday, Oct. 31. The bar crawl is scheduled from 1-9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5.

“Bust out your best costume and get ready for a spooktacular party like no other this season,” says the website for the crawl. “The Clarendon Halloween Crawl celebrates the scariest time of the year in Arlington with thousands of your closest friends!”

Revelers will get a “souvenir haunted mug, access to Clarendon’s best bars, exclusive drink and food specials, free pictures of the event and a raffle entry to win great prizes.”

Participating bars include Mad Rose Tavern, Clarendon Ballroom, Clarendon Grill, IOTA Club and Cafe, Whitlow’s, Mister Days, Spider Kelly’s and Hunan One.
