Locals to Rappel Down Crystal City Hotel for Brain Cancer Research

Photo via Twitter : OverTheEdgeLocal thrill-seekers will have a shot to rappel down the side of a Crystal City hotel building during a charity fundraiser next month.

Over The Edge, an organization that helps raise money for nonprofits across the U.S., is set to partner with Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure during a daredevil event at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City (2799 Jefferson Davis Highway) on Sunday, Sept. 18.

During the challenge, participants who register and raise at least $2,000 to help fund brain cancer research will get the chance to rappel down the side of the hotel. Though the feat might look daunting, no experience is necessary to join in on the fun, organizers said.

Registration costs $75 and reserves attendees a spot on the list. All who want to participate must raise at least $2,000, according to organizers.

Oktoberfest to Come to Shirlington Again

Oktoberfest in Shirlington (Photo via Capitol City Brewing Company)Men in lederhosen and women in dirndls are set to descend on Shirlington for a day of beer drinking, pretzel eating and Bavarian music this fall.

Capitol City Brewing Company is throwing its 17th annual Oktoberfest at The Village at Shirlington (4001 Campbell Avenue) on Saturday, Oct. 1, from noon to 7 p.m.

Admission is $30, which gets festivalgoers who are at least 21 years old a glass and 10 tasting tickets. Extra tickets cost $1, with a five-ticket minimum. But non-drinkers can get in for free.

Capitol City, Mad Fox, Flying Dog and more than five dozen other breweries are expected to offer beer samples at the event. Patrons then can pair their lagers and ales with bratwurst, giant pretzels and other German food on sale during the festival, as they listen to bands play Bavarian tunes.

Beer taps are set to close at 6 p.m.

Comedian Jon Lovitz to Take Arlington Drafthouse Stage

Jon Lovitz (Photo via Flickr/Phil Konstantin)A comedian who once played a “master thespian” and a devil on “Saturday Night Live” is scheduled to bring his stand-up show to Arlington next month.

Jon Lovitz is set to take the stage at Arlington Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike) from Friday, Sept. 16., to Sunday, Sept. 18. He has Friday and Saturday shows at 10 p.m., as well as Saturday and Sunday performances at 7 p.m.

Lovitz, who also voiced the film reviewer in the animated TV show, “The Critic,” is a “versatile comedic actor instantly recognizable for his distinctive voice, acerbic wit, pear-shaped body, and hangdog eyes,” according to Arlington Drafthouse’s website.

Tickets are $30.

Center Hiking Club will have a 10-12-mile walk to visit Colonial-era points of interest, Civil War sites and other historic spots in central Arlington, including Clarendon, Ballston, Arlington Forest and Glencarlyn. The walk costs $2 for people who aren’t club members.

Time: 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Arlington County Police Department will throw a free block party with food, police dog demonstrations, a distracted driver course and “15 minutes behind the badge,” according to an event post.

The Reevesland Learning Center is celebrating the 116th birthday of Arlington’s last dairy farmer, Nelson Reeves, with tomato sandwiches, cupcakes and lemonade. Organizers also will tell stories about him and sing, “The Ballad of Nelson Reeves.”

ACPD to Host Summer Block Party at Kenmore Middle School Next Week

ACPD Summer Block Party 2016, photo via Arlington CountyArlington County Police Department officers are set to bond with locals over free barbecue, games and activities during a summer block party next week.

The police department is scheduled to host a summer block party at Kenmore Middle School (200 S. Carlin Springs Road) on Saturday, Aug. 27, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“This free event provides residents an opportunity to get to know their neighbors and police officers while enjoying interactive stations, safety demonstrations, entertainment, food and much more,” ACPD said in a press release.

Some of the events planned for this year’s block party include a police cruiser expo, K9 demonstration and a “mini academy” where attendees can try their hand at being a cop.

The party will also have a moon bounce and a “kid zone” with badge-making, a “need for speed” police driving experience and an area where kids can try on police gear.

Additionally, the celebration will have “lots of sauce” from Rocklands Barbeque, according to an ACPD promotional video:

O’Sullivan’s to Throw Party With Free Food for 10th Anniversary

St. Patricks Day at OSullivans, photo courtesy of OSullivansAn Irish pub in Clarendon plans to celebrate a milestone birthday by slinging free food and toasting many more years to come with its longtime customers.

O’Sullivan’s Irish Pub (3207 Washington Blvd) is set to host a 10th anniversary party on Sunday, Aug. 28 starting at 3 p.m. The event will feature a free buffet with chicken wings, mashed potatoes, roast beef and other pub fare from 3-6 p.m., said David Morrin, the eatery’s regional manager.

“It’s nice to have a milestone event,” Morrin said. “A lot of restaurants don’t make it very far. We’re excited to be reaching the double digits.”

The party will also have live music from three bands, $5 Guinness and the presentation of two annual awards: Customer of the Year and Employee of the Year.

“We’re going to use this as a thank you for the last 10 years,” Morrin said. “It’s our way to say thanks for keeping us here for 10 years and hopefully into the future.”

Live Concerts at the Netherlands Carillon to End Soon

The next free concert with the 50-bell musical instrument at 1400 N. Meade Street is scheduled for Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m., according to the National Park Service. Kipp Cortez, a Concord University music professor, is slated to perform.

The other remaining live performances are:

Visitors to the carillon can bring food to eat during the concerts. But picnickers should take their trash home with them.

Seating also is limited. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets or folding chairs.

The concert series, which began in May, includes patriotic, jazz and pop music.

“People should come [to our summer concerts] for the view of the Washington, D.C., skyline and the chance to hear a variety of music played by the world’s leading carillonneurs,” Nassor, the Netherlands Carillon’s director, said in an interview with the Rosslyn Business Improvement District.

SNL Legend Darrell Hammond to Perform in Arlington

Darrell Hammond (photo via Arlington Cinema Drafthouse)Saturday Night Live star Darrell Hammond will be performing live stand-up comedy in Arlington over Labor Day weekend.

Hammond, who had the longest tenure of any SNL cast member, was noted for his impressions of Bill Clinton, Al Gore, Sean Connery and, most recently, Donald Trump. Since 2014, he has been SNL’s announcer. Last year he played Colonel Sanders for a KFC ad campaign.

Hammond is performing at the Arlington Cinema Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike) on Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3. There are two show times per day: 7:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tickets are $32.
