Just steps away from the trendy shops and restaurants of Shirlington is a gorgeous two-bedroom loft that makes quite a statement. This light-filled “Ashlawn” model might just be your ideal home in the sought-after Fairlington community.

From the curb, this 1944 garden apartment converted to condo looks classic, with red brick and black shutters, but on the inside, an updated, open floor plan is revealed. A soaring two story foyer and living room over looked by the loft space is the signature — but don’t stop there. The home features two bedrooms, and an option for one or two bathrooms — and loads of storage throughout including three large closets in the master bedroom.

The open-plan living room with neutral carpeting has a spiral staircase that adds architectural interest to the living space and easy access to a cozy reading loft or office.

In addition to the bedrooms and relaxing spaces, this three level condo has lower-level flex space, which could be a home gym or office, and an unfinished attic space for storage. The kitchen has an electric stove, sleek countertops and cabinets and an inviting breakfast-nook-style dining space. This residence also has central air cooling and forced air heating. Additional community amenities include tennis courts, swimming pool, ball fields, basketball courts and community center.

The area around the home is great for people looking to walk, bike, or just spend time outside. The home has a balcony overlooking the property’s backyard that can easily accommodate an al fresco dining table. With a home close to bike and jogging trails, homeowners will love to explore the vibrant Shirlington community, and can easily access anything they may need on foot, including Harris Teeter, the public library, coffee shops, and many top-notch local restaurants and retail shops.

This property is listed at $409,900. For more information or to schedule a showing please contact Bret Brock via email at [email protected] or by phone at 703-538-6030.

Bistro 360 is a wine bar, market, and restaurant tucked away on the main Courthouse drag. Enjoy delicious standbys along with some fresh dishes from the brand new menu! In addition to dining, stop by for a wide selection of wine, specialty beers, and homemade treats in the market section.

Southern Special: You can’t go wrong with the Shrimp and Nora Mills Grits. Sautéed shrimp sits on a bed of silky smooth grits. It’s topped off with some bell peppers, spicy Tasso ham, and a creamy white wine sauce. We’ll eat this for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (or maybe just brunch, lunch, and dinner.)

Release The Quacken: This Asian-inspired Duck Breast features tender, thick slabs that comprise the meat of the dish. Carrot sesame slaw with a hoisin scallion sauce gives it a hearty southeastern twang.

Good Food You Can’t Pronounce: Look no further for lunch today than a delicious Grilled Tuna Nicoise Salad. Fresh tuna seared rare sits atop mesclun greens in a salad fit for Gourmet Magazine. Haricots verts, salty Kalamata olives, tomatoes, and a Tarragon vinaigrette all add complementing flavors.

Georgian Cheesebread: Khachapuri presents an incredible solution to pizza cravings. The homemade crust is light and crunchy, and is sprinkled with feta, Parmesan, and mozzarella cheeses. A sunny side up egg in the middle does more than look pretty; it’s for dipping! Go ahead — tell your kids it’s for adults only and get one more bite in. We won’t judge.

Bitcoin ATM at Spice on WilsonVirtual ATM LLC has launched the first Bitcoin ATM at the Spice on Wilson restaurant (3033 Wilson Blvd.) in Arlington.

The Bitcoin ATM helps consumers buy Bitcoin using cash. Once the consumer deposits cash, the machine can either print out a paper wallet or scan your existing digital wallet on your cell phone to transfer the Bitcoin.

So what is a Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is a new digital currency, similar to money but easier to use. It allows you to send money to anyone, at anytime and anywhere for fractions of a penny. Bitcoin is fast, has little or no fees for the merchant and it’s secure.

Consumers no longer have to worry about their data getting stolen — Bitcoin transactions are private and don’t require you to exchange any personal information like you do with credit cards, and merchants love it because they don’t have to pay credit card fees. Have a family member across the world that needs money? Just send them Bitcoin and they will have it in less than a second.

Merchants who currently accept it are Microsoft, Overstock, Dell computers, Expedia and others. Since the technology is relatively new, most brick and mortar merchants don’t accept it yet.

The goal is to bring Bitcoin to main street, and the Bitcoin ATM is the beginning of introducing people to the virtual world.

“I chose Spice on Wilson because of the location and the amazing food,” said John McKee, founder of Virtual ATM LLC. “Try their fish tacos!”

When you first step into the neighborhood of Madison Homes at Eleven Oaks, you can’t help but feel like it’s a movie set. The houses are beautiful, all in a row, and each with its own unique style — like the families you can imagine living in them.

I was curious first to visit The Beaumont, which is one of the “City Homes” models. Since Eleven Oaks is in Fairfax, a sunny suburb, I was wondering what the take on city living would be. This is a four-bedroom detached home that is modern and full of light. I particularly loved the cozy breakfast nook at the back of the first level. Upstairs, the crown molding and luxury bathroom made a big impression. This model shows off the optional elevator, a great way to get more from a new home

Next was The Collier, a larger city homes model, model with four bedrooms, plus a bedroom and bath in the finished lower level. It has a lovely open-plan ground floor and felt very spacious overall. The formal dining room, family room and deck made this home perfect for entertaining family and friends. Whether you plan to relax in the spacious den or have a family dinner, The Collier seemed like a good place to come home to.

There’s a special going on the Collier model now, so it’s priced starting at $989,900 and includes a complimentary elevator. There’s definitely something to be said for the convenience of an elevator in your home, and they are available in most Eleven Oaks residences.

Finally, I headed over to one of the single-family homes, the Evesham. It wowed right away with the long kitchen, which felt warm with its hardwood floors and curved center island. Upstairs, the master bedroom was dramatic with the best walk in closet ever. I loved the tray ceiling and soaking tub in he attached bathroom — it felt almost like a hotel, but with all the bedrooms and touches like the fireplace, it was clearly meant for a family.

Overall, Madison Homes at Eleven Oaks was a great time. The neighborhood was well-groomed and accessible to Fairfax, and especially convenient to the George Mason campus. The staff was friendly and helpful and I loved the luxurious components to the homes of every size and shape. It was clear that special attention was given to natural light and outdoor spaces, as well as the little details that can make a home so special.

The Eleven Oaks sales center and models are open daily at:

Tucked in the northeast corner of the country’s #3 most walkable mid-sized locality is Arlington’s Courthouse neighborhood. This urban village close to bustling Washington, D.C., has a lot to offer in terms of living “green” — from transportation to dining to dwelling.

Getting Around

With so much of Arlington County on a Car-Free Diet, by train, bike or foot, green transportation is a breeze in Courthouse.

Take the Orange and Silver lines from the Court House Metro station or jump on an Arlington Transit Bus or the Metrobus. Grab a bike from one of the many convenient Capital Bikeshare stations and ride the bike lanes of Clarendon and Wilson Boulevards. Hop on the mesmerizing Custis Trail at North Veitch Street or cruise the Arlington Boulevard Trail from Courthouse Road.

Eating

Between the county’s first MOM’s Organic Market opening later this year and the weekly Arlington Farmers Market, eating green is a cinch in Courthouse.

MOM’s Organic Market offers 100% certified organic produce, locally sourced products, an extensive grocery selection, as well as a free customer recycling center. And when you are in a hurry, you can make a quick stop at Naked Lunch, MOM’s all-organic eatery featuring prepared foods and made-to-order meals.

The year-round Arlington Farmers Market is held every Saturday morning near the County Courthouse, just off of the Custis Trail. For more than 35 years, market vendors have peddled everything from fresh produce to fresh pasta grown and made within 125 miles of the Courthouse neighborhood.

Living

At Courthouse’s new eco-conscious Verde Pointe Apartments, just off of Lee Highway at Uhle Street, living green is simple.

Not only does “Verde” mean “green” in Spanish, but each of the unique studio, convertible, one- and two-bedroom, and one-bedroom plus den units are chock-full of green features. Built to LEED Gold standards, the pet-friendly apartment homes feature ENERGY STAR appliances, high efficiency toilets and individually programmable thermostats. And with additional high-end amenities such as a rooftop pool and large balconies, combined with easy access to Capital Bikeshare and electric car charging stations, the Custis Trail and Mom’s Organic Market, it’s easy being green at Verde Pointe!

Steve Yoon is the owner of Sushi Rock (1900 Clarendon Boulevard), a sushi restaurant with a rock and roll theme.

The trendy restaurant is two blocks from the Courthouse Metro station and offers customers a fun place to unwind and try some sushi, both old favorites and unique house recipes.

Steve began training to be a sushi chef in 2001 in a Japanese restaurant, Hama Sushi, in Venice Beach California. He opened up his local restaurant in 2012. Now it has six sushi chefs and is known across the area for its great sushi and specialty drinks.

ARLnow sat down with him and asked him the questions you’ve always wanted to ask a sushi expert.

What is the most important ingredient in a piece sushi?

A lot of people think fish is the most important, but the rice is equally important. I’d say they each have 50 percent of the importance in a sushi roll.

We use short grain Japanese rice, or sushi rice, and we use rice seasoning vinegar. So every sushi restaurant and every sushi chef, they use their own seasoning vinegar recipe. The rice vinegar style is totally unique to each sushi restaurant.

What are the differences between Japanese and American sushi?

The Japanese generally know a lot more about fish than American people. So naturally I didn’t have to explain so much about fish to Japanese people than I have to for Americans.

So in America, salmon, yellowtail and tuna are more popular, and Japanese customers tend to be more comfortable eating clam, scallops — more knowledge means a wider variety of fish. But they also love yellowtail and tuna. But here, not everybody but most people prefer tuna, salmon and yellowtail. So the biggest difference is different knowledge means different fish.

Is there any difference in the way sushi is prepared in the States than in Japan?

No, the preparation of fish is exactly the same in both places.

What is the most difficult thing to master as a sushi chef to make the perfect nigiri [nigiri is the style of sushi that is sliced fish with a ball of rice underneath]?

You need a lot of practice. To make the perfect nigiri sushi you have to practice for two years. I was hired by an American company, which is a different training. To make nigiri you need to make the perfect rice, which takes a very long time. Then you have to learn to cut the fish. It takes a long time before you can make a perfect nigiri, which would be a nice shape.

What are some common mistakes people make when they eat sushi?

I see a lot of people in my restaurant, and one common mistake is when they eat nigiri is to dip the rice directly into soy sauce. I recommend dipping the fish part only and not the rice. That’s the most common mistake.
