TRAFFIC ALERT: Downed Utility Lines Close Section of Columbia Pike

A section of Columbia Pike closed in both directions for downed utility lines lying in the roadway.

The Pike closed to all traffic between S. Randolph Street and S. George Mason Drive, with police diverting cars onto side streets. A reader said the lines came down around 2:30 p.m. Thursday (July 15) at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. George Mason Drive.

Crews from both Verizon and Comcast were on scene to fix the downed lines. According to scanner traffic, some lanes began to reopen just after 4:15 p.m.

Drivers in the area should expect continued delays as lanes reopen.

Crash on Southbound I-395 Snarling Traffic

Traffic is backing up on I-395 after a crash in the southbound lanes near King Street.

As of 1:15 p.m., all but one lane was blocked due to the emergency response. Injuries were reported in the crash, but were said to not be serious in nature.

Arlington County Police, Arlington medics and Virginia State Police are on scene.

SUV Overturns in Wilson Blvd Crash

An SUV flipped on its side as a result of a two-vehicle crash on Wilson Blvd this morning.

The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. at the intersection of Wilson and N. Rhodes Street, roughly between Rosslyn and Courthouse. The intersection is home to the Rhodeside Grill restaurant.

The road was blocked immediately following the crash, causing some traffic tie-ups.

No word yet on whether there were any injuries.

Road Closures Planned for Arlington Youth Triathlon

Some roads will close on Sunday for the 2017 Arlington Youth Triathlon.

The children-only triathlon includes a swimming race, a bike race and a run. The race will begin in the pool at Washington-Lee High School, followed by a loop bike course and a flat run on the outdoor track at Washington-Lee.

“The races are intended to encourage children to have fun while participating in physical activities,” according to an online event listing. “The swim-bike-run disciplines of triathlon are life-long sports that support a healthy lifestyle from childhood through adulthood.”

The road closures will take place roughly between 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the following locations:

  • N. Quincy Street between Washington Blvd and 15th Street N.
  • 15th Street N. between N. Quincy Street and N. Stafford Street
  • N. Stafford Street between Washington Blvd and 15th Street N.

Police said street parking in the area will be restricted, and motorists should be on the lookout for temporary “No Parking” signs. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed.

Cars Crash in Front of Delhi Club in Clarendon

A collision in Clarendon led to two cars hopping the curb in front of Delhi Club restaurant Sunday afternoon.

The crash happened at the intersection of Clarendon Blvd and N. Highland Street. The cars then rolled onto the sidewalk in front of the restaurant, which is across from the Clarendon Metro station.

By one report, the at least one of the cars struck the building, but no serious damage was evident. No word on whether there were any injuries.

More Route 110 Lane Closures Begin Wednesday Night

Lanes will close on Route 110 near the Pentagon next week for up to two months as part of a state construction project.

The right lane of northbound Route 110 at Washington Blvd will close Wednesday night and the right lane of southbound Route 110 will close Thursday night at the same interchange.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said the closures are to remove and rebuild the bridge piers on the shoulders. Message signs alerting motorists to the lane closures are in place.

The left lane of northbound Route 110 and the left lane of southbound Route 110, which have been closed since early April to reconstruct the bridge pier in the median, will reopen Tuesday night.

The work is part of the Route 27 over Route 110 project, which is scheduled for completion next spring. The project will modify and repair the Washington Blvd bridge, including widening it and making it longer, wider and taller than the existing bridge.

Arlington Ridge Road to Close for Water Service Installation

Arlington Ridge Road, the scene of numerous water main breaks in the past few years, will be partially closed Saturday for water service installation.

The road will be closed between the I-395 ramp and 23rd Street S. between 8 a.m.-4 p.m., barring any complications, according to Arlington County.

Similar closures happened on Arlington Ridge in 2015.

Water Main Break Reported in Fairlington

Dozens of homes in Fairlington are without water pressure this afternoon due to a water main break.

The break was first reported this morning along S. Abingdon Street, between 30th and 31st Street S. Arlington County crews are on scene making repairs, with water service expected to be restored by 8 p.m.

Only one lane of traffic is getting by the work on S. Abingdon Street, according to Arlington Alerts.

Last year Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services crews repaired 203 water main breaks in the county, the department said in a tweet, shortly before tweeting about the Fairlington incident.

Metrobus, Tour Bus Collide Near Pentagon City Mall

Police temporarily closed roads near the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City this afternoon after a Metrobus collided with a tour bus on S. Hayes Street.

The Metrobus’ front windshield was smashed by the collision just after 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of S. Hayes Street and 15th Street S., while the tour bus had some damage near its back right tire.

One driver complained of neck pain after the crash, according to scanner traffic. There were no other injuries, and both buses were empty.

Police directed traffic around the incident but did not close any additional lanes, with the Metrobus blocking 15th Street S. for a time until it moved out of the roadway under its own steam. Some debris was left near the scene after the accident, but was cleared by officers.

Officers reopened 15th Street S. by 1:30 p.m., with the Metrobus moved out of the intersection into the right-hand southbound lane of S. Hayes Street. Traffic could get by in the other lanes.

Car Flips on Lee Highway Near Rosslyn

A collision between two cars that left one on its side closed two lanes of Lee Highway near the Key Bridge Marriott Hotel in Rosslyn.

The crash happened around 4 p.m., near the intersection with N. Oak Street. A driver heading west on Lee Highway in a grey Audi collided with an Infiniti looking to turn right from N. Oak Street. The two collided, with the Infiniti left on its side.

Police closed the two outside lanes of Lee Highway, but left traffic through in the right-hand lane with an officer directing traffic.

Paramedics were dispatched for three reported injuries according to scanner traffic, none of them said to be life-threatening. Medics did not appear to require a stretcher, as it was removed with no one in it.

Just before 4:30 p.m., crews were preparing a winch to upright the stricken Infiniti. The Audi’s front was smashed in and it was still in the roadway.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Washington Blvd Blocked By Fallen Tree

Update at 10:40 a.m. — The westbound lanes have reopened.

Washington Blvd is currently blocked in the area of 2nd Street S. due to a large fallen tree, according to scanner traffic.

Police are setting up roadblocks at Columbia Pike and Route 50 to divert traffic.

According to initial reports, the tree — located along the eastbound lanes — fell across all lanes of traffic around 10 a.m. One car was possibly struck by the tree but no injuries were reported.

Police and VDOT crews are working to reopen the westbound lanes; the eastbound lanes are likely to remain closed for an extended period of time.
