Arlington, VA–Bridges to Independence announced today a new contribution from AT&T. A private, nonprofit organization, Bridges is dedicated to serving families experiencing homelessness in the City of Alexandria and Arlington County, VA. “We are very grateful to AT&T for demonstrating this true generosity of spirit and resources,” said Sam Kelly, Bridges’ Chief Executive Officer. “Youth experiencing homelessness have many obstacles ahead of them. AT&T’s support will allow us to serve the children here in our community who need us most.”
“Water is crucial to birds, sometimes more than food,” said Michael Zuiker, owner of the Arlington, Wild Birds Unlimited. “Water is vitally important when it’s extremely hot, because birds do not sweat and must remove excess body heat through their respiratory system. So, when temperatures rise, birds’ respiration rate increases, sometimes to the point where they can pant like a dog. This activity dehydrates birds,” added Zuiker.
A reliable source of water also allows birds to bathe regularly, a critical part of feather maintenance and staying in top-flight condition. However, offering water does not have to be difficult or expensive.

Mount Purrnon Cat Café and Wine Bar plans to be Northern Virginia’s first cat café, combining adoptable cats, history, and wine to create a unique experience for visitors. The founders, Kristin Cowan and Adam Patterson, are currently running a Kickstarter to raise funds to help with startup costs. Donating to the Kickstarter gets you a variety of rewards and your card isn’t charged until the end of the campaign, and only if the goal is met.
The café will include a lounge room filled with adoptable cats and a separate bar/café area where visitors can grab café items, snacks, beer, and wine. “Even if people aren’t huge cat fans, they can still visit the cat café and grab a drink,” says Kristin, “but they will probably want to go into the cat room when they see how much fun it is.” Featuring an early U.S. history theme, Mount Purrnon also plans to offer information on the area through books, reference materials, and maps. The café will also hold special events like cat yoga, trivia, and game night, and will be working with a local shelter to get the cats adopted.
