“It is important for me to see first-hand the great research projects that are being funded through the partnership you have with different federal agencies because I can use this knowledge during budget deliberations,” said Kaine. “It is especially important for Congress to pass two-year budgets that invest in research and give people better space to plan without the worry of sequester cuts and imminent layoffs.”

During the visit, Kaine received an overview of the work done by the Hume Center for National Security and Technology, which leads Virginia Tech’s research and education programs focused on cyber and national security technologies. In addition to conducting research for the federal defense and intelligence communities, Hume’s educational training programs have helped address the shortage of qualified U.S. citizens to serve in federal cyber and intelligence roles.

Three Decembers – based on the unpublished play “Some Christmas Letters” by Tony Award winning playwright Terrence McNally. The opera chronicles three decades in the lives of Broadway diva Madeline Mitchell and her two adult children; as told through a series of letters written by Madeline (Maddy) during the Christmas of 1986, 1996, and 2006. Charlie the son, is gay, and yearns for his mother’s acceptance of him and his dying lover. Madeline’s estranged daughter Beatrice is now married with a family of her own, and fiercely resents her mother’s decision to choose “the stage” over family. Madeline herself must face the dark secret she has kept from both her children concerning the mysterious death of their father. Hailed by Opera Today as a “modern masterpiece” this poignant modern opera will take audiences on an emotional rollercoaster ride.

UrbanArias presents THREE DECEMBERS, a chamber opera in two acts by composer Jake Heggie with libretto by Gene Sheer. Three Decembers was first commissioned by the Houston Grand Opera under the working title Last Acts and premiered in 2008. The original cast featured the great American mezzo soprano Frederica von Stade as Madeline, along with baritone Keith Phares, soprano Kristin Clayton and conducted by Patrick Summers. The title of the opera was later changed to Three Decembers and has appeared at San Francisco Opera, Fort Worth Opera Festival, and Chicago Opera Theater.

What do a N.A.S.A. engineer, corporate lawyer, stay-at-home-mom and your local barista all have in common? They spend their evenings at Saffron Dance learning something you might not expect: Belly Dance. If you haven’t belly danced before, now is the perfect time to begin. To mark Saffron Dance’s 8th year as a hub for Middle Eastern dance, Saffron is offering FREE introductory “teaser” classes from September 15th to September 28th. These teaser classes give students a taste of Saffron’s signature 4-week Belly Dance Crash Course program.

Created for individuals who are coming to belly dance for the very first time, Saffron’s Crash Courses are structured and easy to follow — absolutely no dance experience necessary! They are perfect for students to learn the basics of Belly Dance. Each week, a new movement is introduced and drilled, building on and incorporating elements from the prior weeks. Particular focus is given to developing correct posture alignment, flexibility, arm positions and paths, fundamental shimmies, basic hip accents, introductory undulations, easy to follow traveling steps and combinations. The program culminates in a performance opportunity so students can share their new hobby with family and friends.

Today we’re furthering that goal by introducing a new slate of revamped but familiar-sounding options for the local business marketing arsenal: press releases, coupons and announcements.

Everybody knows the old, familiar press release. Dashed off via email, your press release competes with hundreds of others for the attention of a small corps of harried local journalists. Maybe, if your web guy gets around to it, the press release will also find its way to your website.
