The Arlington County Bar Foundation recently held its annual Donor-Donee Reception at the Arlington County Courthouse. The event focuses on the various community charitable organizations that the Foundation funds. The annual presentation of the Campbell-Smith-Thompson Award is also made at this event. The Foundation presents the award to a Board member who has made extraordinary contributions to the philanthropic mission of the Foundation throughout the year. This year, the Campbell-Smith-Thompson award was presented to Sudeep Bose.

During his Chairmanship and his six years on the Board, Bose has excelled in memorializing the rich heritage of the Arlington legal community through social media, photography and videography. He used his news media experience and business acumen to improve how the Foundation communicates with its supporters, grantees and well-wishers.

Despite the challenges Bose faced as Chairman from 2020-2021, he completed the most successful grant season in recent history. With the help of other Directors of the Foundation, Bose led the Foundation to surpass all previous years in grants to support community non-profit organizations. This year, the Foundation received all funds from Arlington lawyers.

Bose successfully bridged communication with Foundation grantees, encouraging their efforts to fulfill their core missions. Bose’s reverence for legal history and its significance to the modern practice of law inspired him to digitize and rebroadcast media from the early days of the Foundation. Bose’s efforts to bring the Foundation to a new age in technology have allowed ongoing remembrance for new Directors and leaders of the Bar.

Just three months after its highly-anticipated opening in Arlington, VA’s Clarendon neighborhood, Bar Ivy is thrilled to debut its first-ever brunch service, beginning Sunday, October 2. The new brunch service will run all day on Sundays from 11am to 6pm, and on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm, featuring creative West Coast-inspired, hyper-seasonal dishes and drinks enjoyed on its expansive garden plaza and airy plant-filled interior.

Executive Chef Jonathan Till and Chef/Owner Nathan Beauchamp collaborated on a creative morning & afternoon menu showcasing Mid Atlantic ingredients in dishes inspired by the opposite coast. Similar to its local and seasonal dinner menu, the weekend offerings are heavily influenced by fresh vegetables and produce, with everything made in house, from house cured pork belly, lamb and mushroom bacons; to freshly baked crumpets, sourdough loaves and Hawaiian rolls.

Family recipes also play a part in Bar Ivy’s brunch offerings, as Chef Till pays homage to his grandmother “Tutu” (Hawaiian for “grandmother”) who once owned a brunch restaurant and instilled in him a love of food.

Starters include Bar Ivy’s now-famous homemade bread & butter service, currently Hawaiian Bread rolls with miso honey butter and apple butter; a Greek yogurt Parfait sprinkled with a family-recipe granola from Chef Till’s grandmother’s cookbook, fresh berries and local honey; and a lightly Seared Little Gem salad topped with house lamb pancetta, egg and pecorino crisp.

Peak-season produce from VA’s Linda Vista Farms is featured in dishes such as the constantly-changing Quiche Du Jour which currently includes peppers, squash and onion; a Market Omelette featuring seasonal veggies from the local Courthouse farmer’s market, which currently includes zucchini, peppers, mushroom, onion and swiss; plus the Harvest Bowl, a colorful mix-it-up grain-and-veggie bowl of quinoa, farro, wild rice, roasted in-season vegetables, a shoyu egg and chili crisp.

Heartier brunch entrees include an indulgent Croque Madame with ham, mornay, and a fried egg on sourdough; a unique Eggs Benedict using house-cured pork belly (with an option to sub in crab cakes), homemade crumpets and hollandaise; an open-faced Avocado BLT layering house pork belly bacon (with a vegetarian option for house mushroom bacon), tomato jam, fresh avocado and lettuce on sourdough; and a brunch-meets-lunch Patty Melt sandwiching angus beef, swiss, Russian dressing and onion between homemade toasted rye bread (Chef Till toasts and hand-grinds the rye berries himself for the bread).

Sweet brunch lovers will enjoy unique presentations of two classic brunch dishes – Tutu’s Farro Pancakes (another family-recipe inspired by Chef Till’s grandmother) which incorporate farro, stacked high and swirled with a seasonal apple crème anglaise; and golden brown cubes of French Toast served on skewers, bananas foster-style with fresh banana and boozy hot buttered rum syrup.

Cocktails from BHG beverage director Ian Fletcher are refreshing riffs on classics, including a Bruncharita which showcases a citrus trio of kalamansi, blood orange and lime alongside Casamigos Reposado tequila; a green-hued Michelada Verde spiced up with tomatillo, poblano, barrel-aged hot sauce, Pacifico Mexican beer and a Tajin rim; a peachy gummy-garnished I Dream of Bellini with peach liqueur, lemon and prosecco; plus classic Mimosas featuring fresh-squeezed OJ and Bloody Marys made with a house spicy tomato mix and pickled veggie garnish.

Given Bar Ivy’s morning coffee program served from its patio café kiosk, guests can also get their buzz on two ways with two coffee cocktails – a Traditional Irish Coffee (inspired by the iconic Buena Vista Café in San Francisco) with Jameson whiskey, brown sugar, local Passenger coffee and heavy cream; and the simple two-ingredient Brew Ha pairing Licor Strega with espresso. There is also a large selection of natural wines and craft beers to enjoy.

Brunch at Bar Ivy can be enjoyed both outdoors and indoors: on their expansive 125-seat garden plaza, and their colorful airy plant-filled dining room. Brunch is hosted all day on Sundays from 11am-6pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm. Reservations are available via Resy but walk-ins are also welcomed if space is available. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) prevented two Alexandria, Va., residents from carrying their handguns onto their flights yesterday, Thursday, Sept. 29. These gun catches came on the heels of another gun that was caught a day earlier, which resulted in three guns caught in a two-day span.

Thursday morning a woman was stopped with her .380 caliber gun among her carry-on items. It was not loaded. Later in the afternoon, a man was stopped with a 9mm handgun loaded with 14 bullets, including one in the chamber. He also had an additional 14 bullets among three gun magazines. The two incidents were not related.

In each instance when TSA officers spotted the firearms, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police were notified, confiscated the weapons and cited the travelers on weapons charges.

“It is disturbing to see so many individuals carrying their firearms to our security checkpoints,” said John Busch, TSA’s Federal Security Director for the airport. “If you own a firearm, our web site, www.tsa.gov, has detailed information on how to safely transport it for a flight. We are happy to help transport it as long as it is properly packed and declared with the airline.”

Passengers are permitted to travel with firearms only in checked baggage if they are unloaded, packed in a hard-sided locked case and declared at the airline counter so that it can be placed in the belly of the aircraft with other checked baggage as described on the TSA website.

Bringing a gun to an airport checkpoint also carries a federal civil penalty because TSA reserves the right to issue a civil penalty to travelers who have guns and gun parts with them at a checkpoint. Civil penalties for bringing a handgun into a checkpoint can stretch into thousands of dollars, depending on mitigating circumstances. This applies to travelers with or without concealed gun carry permits because even though an individual may have a concealed carry permit, it does not allow for a firearm to be carried onto an airplane. The complete list of civil penalties is posted online. Additionally, if a traveler with a gun is a member of TSA PreCheck®, that individual may lose their TSA PreCheck privileges.

Firearm possession laws vary by state and locality and passengers should do their homework to make sure that they are not violating any local firearm laws. Travelers should also contact their airline as they may have additional requirements for traveling with firearms and ammunition.

Nationwide, TSA officers detected 5,972 firearms on passengers or their carry-on bags at checkpoints last year. Of the guns caught by TSA in 2021, about 86 percent were loaded.

Fifty-one artists will be featured in the ‘Scapes exhibit at the Falls Church Arts gallery from October 8 through November 12. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 8, at 7:30 pm. Artists will be on hand to share their processes and inspirations. Juror and internationally renowned landscape artist Bryan Jernigan will speak about the jurying process. This event is free and open to the public.

The exhibit theme, “landscapes, memoryscapes, seascapes, dreamscapes,” challenged artists to contemplate the “‘scapes” that inhabit their world–inner or outer, real or imagined, representational or abstract, macro- or microscopic–in this all-media show.

The Falls Church Arts gallery is located at 700-B West Broad St. (Route 7), Falls Church. It is open Tuesday-Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Masks are optional and guests are asked to postpone their visit if they are not well.

Artworks can also be viewed online at www.fallschurcharts.org. All pieces can be purchased at the gallery or on the website.

A $150 Juror’s Choice Award and a $50 People’s Choice Award were made possible by a donation from DuBro Architects + Builders, 429 S. Maple Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22046. Jernigan will announce the Juror’s Choice Award at the opening. The People’s Choice Award will be announced on October 30, based on votes from visitors to the gallery.

Jernigan spoke generally about the exhibit theme, saying ‘Scapes departs “from the traditional ‘landscapes’ show, featuring the broad use of media–from sculpture to photography to paintings, fiber, collage and mixed media in this show, and the attention to the formal principles of art–whether that’s composition, value, use of line or repetition, mastery of color, highlights, shadows and more.”

He also talked about the challenges in selecting artworks for ‘Scapes. “I had to narrow the 197 submissions to just around 50. Eliminating nearly 75% of the work for any show would be incredibly difficult, but when the artwork is across-the-board stellar, it made my job that much harder. So, what viewers will see will be truly the cream of the crop!

“I am so proud of the artists’ community in northern Virginia. In reviewing all the submissions, it is evident it is rich with promise and growing every day. The ‘Scapes show is singularly a validation of the fact that art is alive and well in our community.”

Jernigan is a painter and teacher whose work has won numerous awards. He routinely participates in juried and non-juried art shows and events, and his work is held by patrons both nationally and internationally.
The following artists have works in ‘Scapes:

John Allen, John Ballou, Sara Bardin, Ruth Becker, Diana Bozza, Donna Byrne, Julie Clark, Jodi Condes, Rita Corwin, Amanda Dempsey, JK Dimond, Vicky Dorn-Fontana, Bethany Douglas, Roberta Drabyk, Erin Endean, Samantha Lane Fiddy, Caitlin Garvey, GM Guernica, Xavier Hardison, Sara Harland, Stuart Hindle, Daniel Horowitz, Nancy Jakubowski, Kiefer Johnson, Roxanne Kaylor, Elissa Krieg, Leslie Landerkin, Gerda Lane, Sharon Malley, Russ Mardon, Carolyn Marshall Wright, Molly McCracken, Jane McElvany Coonce, Suzanne McIntire, Anne Meagher-Cook, Aynex Mercado, David Merrell, Cynthia Miller, Marilyn Miyamoto, Nan Morrison, Sandi Parker, Alejandra Pineiro, Helen Power, William Rollins, Joan Slottow, Margaret Stewart, Terry Svat, Suzanne Updike, John Valenti, Rebecca Visger, and Craig Wright.
