Flash Flood Watch Issued for Arlington

Heavy rain is expected tomorrow night, and already the National Weather Service is warning of possible flooding.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STERLING VIRGINIA HAS ISSUED A FLASH FLOOD WATCH FOR THE WASHINGTON AND BALTIMORE METROPOLITAN AREAS FROM LATE TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON

A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL SLOWLY APPROACH THE AREA TUESDAY NIGHT BEFORE PASSING THROUGH EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING. RAIN IS EXPECTED TO OVERSPREAD THE AREA BY TUESDAY EVENING…BUT THE HEAVIEST RAINFALL IS EXPECTED LATE TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. RAINFALL AMOUNTS AROUND ONE TO TWO INCHES ARE EXPECTED WITH ISOLATED AMOUNTS UP TO 3 INCHES POSSIBLE IN HEAVIER BANDS OF RAIN AND THUNDERSTORMS. HEAVY AMOUNTS OF RAINFALL MAY CAUSE SMALL STREAMS AND CREEKS TO RISE OUT OF THEIR BANKS.

A FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS THAT CONDITIONS MAY DEVELOP THAT LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING. FLASH FLOODING IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION. YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS BE ISSUED.

Emergency Loudspeakers to Be Tested in Rosslyn

Don’t be alarmed if you hear loud horns or a test message being broadcast in the Rosslyn/Iwo Jima Memorial area this morning.

Arlington County’s Office of Emergency Management says it will be testing its outdoor warning system speakers between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

OEM conducted a similar test in Courthouse last week.

Arlington County will be testing its outdoor warning system speaker system in Courthouse this afternoon.

The county says people in the Courthouse area may hear “loud horns and/or a test message” between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.

So far, we have not heard of any flooding in Arlington as a result of this morning’s deluge. However, Arlington County just issued the following alert:

Update at 2:00 p.m. — A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Arlington County until 2:45.

National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire Metro region, including Arlington County until 8:00 pm this evening.Primary threats include heavy rain, hail and lightning. If you are outside and the storm approaches, seek shelter indoors.

Even More Snow Heading Towards Area

Arlington County has issued an alert regarding the potential for significant snowfall on Thursday.

National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area, beginning late Wednesday night through Thursday night. There is potential for 5 or more inches of snow.
