Police: ‘Inappropriate Comments’ Lead to Va. Square Assault

Police car lightsThree men were arrested early this morning after allegedly assaulting a man outside Darna Lounge (946 N. Jackson Street) in Virginia Square.

The assault came after the victim left the bar at 2:15 a.m., according to the Arlington County Police Department crime report.

“Three subjects were exiting the bar when they made some inappropriate comments to a female who was standing with the victim, who then said something back to them,” Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck told ARLnow.com.

Fahad Alshequiq, 29, of Falls Church; Dede Dede, 34, of Dumfries; and Abdulaziz Alreshood, 29, of Arlington were arrested and charged with assault by mob. They are being held without bond.

The victim refused a medical transport.

Police Investigating Assault with Baseball Bat

Police car lights(Updated at 2:15 p.m.) Arlington County Police are investigating a daytime assault in the Douglas Park neighborhood.

The incident happened just past 11:00 a.m., near the intersection of 16th Street S. and Glebe Road. A man struck his nephew in the head with a baseball bat following a verbal argument, according to police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

The victim was transported to the trauma center at Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, including a “significant laceration” on his head. He was alert and conscious when police arrived.

The victim’s uncle surrendered to police without incident, Sternbeck said. He’s expected to be charged with malicious wounding.

Victim, Witnesses Testify During Krusinski Trial — The 23-year-old woman accusing the Air Force’s former sexual assault prevention chief of groping her in May testified about the incident yesterday during the first day of Lt. Col. Jeffrey Krusinski’s assault and battery trial. The woman broke down in tears while describing how Krusinski allegedly grabbed her buttocks after he spent the night drinking in Crystal City. Witnesses reported the woman repeatedly punched Krusinski following the alleged groping. One of the witnesses who testified — a transgender woman who goes by Jordain — also reported being groped and propositioned by Krusinski that night. Jordain said Krusinski appeared to be a “happy drunk” and she brushed him off. The trial is expected to last three days. [Stars and Stripes, Military Times]

County Prepares for Winter — No snowflakes have fallen yet, but Arlington County has already launched preparations for the 2013-2014 winter season. The snow removal team includes 92 drivers and 46 trucks that are equipped with plows and salt spreaders. Residents will be able to track the progress of road clearing online, including the ability to check traffic cameras at certain intersections. Residents are asked to clear snow from sidewalks within 24 hours of a storm, per the county’s Snow Removal Ordinance. [Arlington County]

1K Wine and Beer Walk on Sunday — The Washington Wine Academy is hosting its semi-annual 1K Wine and Beer Walk in Crystal City on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 16-17). Start times will be staggered from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and participants get to sample 22 different types of wine or beer while strolling through the Shops at Crystal City. Crime Report: Assault By Mob

(Updated on 8/29/16) A street fight in the Virginia Square area led to three arrests Monday night.

Police say three men in their 20s attacked another group of three men after they left a bar. From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

ASSAULT BY MOB, 10/14/13, 800 block of N. Pollard Street. On October 14 at 11:52pm, three male victims were assaulted in the street after they left a bar. ***, 22, of Arlington, VA; ***, 23, of Arlington, VA; and ***, 23, of Arlington, VA were all arrested for assault by mob and held without bail.

Crime Report: Jewelry Stolen

Someone broke into an apartment in the Long Branch Creek neighborhood over the weekend and stole a “variety of expensive jewelry.”

From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

BURGLARY, 08/24/13, 2600 block of S. Veitch Street. Between 7:45 pm on August 23 and 11:45 pm on August 24, a female victim noticed the screen of the window had been cut and her apartment had been broken into. A variety of expensive jewelry was stolen. There is no suspect(s) description.

Last Thursday, a man was punched in the face and had his cell phone stolen in the area of St. Thomas More Cathedral School.

ROBBERY, 08/22/13, 100 block of N. Thomas Street. At 3:25 pm on August 22, a victim was punched in the face and had his cell phone taken. The suspect fled the scene on foot and is described as a black male in his 20’s, approximately 5’7″ tall and 160 lbs. He had a neck tattoo as well as arm sleeve tattoos. He as wearing an army fatigue shirt, jeans and grey new balance sneakers.

Air Force Officer Indicted on Assault Charge

Lt. Col Jeffrey Krusinski leaves an Arlington courthouseLt. Col Jeffrey Krusinski, the former chief of the U.S. Air Force’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response branch, has been indicted on a charge of assault and battery.

A grand jury returned the indictment this afternoon, a month after prosecutors dropped a sexual battery charge against Krusinski, who’s accused of grabbing the breasts and buttocks of a woman in Crystal City.

Prosecutors said changing the venue, from General District Court to Circuit Court, and changing the charge, from sexual battery to assault and battery, were largely procedural moves unrelated to the facts of the case. Krusinski’s arrest in May helped to spark a national conversation about sexual assault in the military.

A trial date is expected to be set on Thursday in Arlington Circuit Court.

Police: Drunken Man Assaults Lyon Village Residents

(Updated at 2:15 p.m. on 12/23/21) An intoxicated man assaulted two Lyon Village residents after stumbling into their yard and banging on their door, according to Arlington County Police.

Police say 23-year-old [Redacted], of Harrisonburg, Va., banged on the side door of a house on the 1400 block of N. Garfield Street, near Clarendon’s bar district, around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Two female residents came out to confront [redacted] after they saw him entering their garage and ducking behind a vehicle, said ACPD spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

The intruder started walking back down the driveway, exchanged some “choice words” with the residents and took a swing at one of the women, but missed, Sternbeck said. At that point, the other woman tried to come to her roommate’s aid, but was allegedly tackled by [Redacted].

The first woman then tried to help, but was taken to the ground by [Redacted] and put in a headlock, police said. Finally, two passersby intervened and pulled the man off the women, according to Sternbeck. A bouncer from nearby Hunan Number One restaurant, hearing the commotion, also came over and restrained the man until police arrived.

[Redacted] was charged with felony strangulation, two counts of assault and battery, and unlawful entry. He was combative with the arresting officers, Sternbeck added.

Man Slashed Outside Crystal City Metro

Police car lightsA man suffered a large cut during an attempted robbery outside the Crystal City Metro station early Sunday morning.

Police say the man was outside the Metro station around 4:00 a.m. when a male suspect approached him from behind and asked for a cigarette. The suspect then demanded money and when the victim refused to hand over any cash, the suspect took out a knife and slashed him across the right forearm, police said.

“The victim sustained a large laceration and was transported to Virginia Hospital Center,” said police. “The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5’7” tall and 180 lbs. He was wearing a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers at the time of the incident.”

The suspect is wanted by police on expected charges of malicious wounding and attempted robbery.

UPDATED: Homeless Men Attacked Outside Library

Police car lights(Updated at 4:00 p.m.) An arrest has been made in the case of two homeless men who were viciously attacked outside Arlington Central Library early this morning.

The attack took place just before 3:00 a.m., on the 1000 block of N. Quincy Street.

Police say the men, who are brothers, were sleeping on benches outside the library when another man approached and began arguing with them. The argument escalated and the suspect then brandished a machete and began slashing at the victims, police said.

Derrick Sutherland (photo via ACPD)The victims suffered “numerous large lacerations” all over their upper torso and face area, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. They were transported to George Washington University Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The victims have not been identified by name, but Sternbeck described them as 26-year-old brothers of no fixed address.

The suspect, 28-year-old Derrick Sutherland, remained at large this morning but was later arrested in the Ballston area. Sutherland is homeless and was known to carry a machete, Sternbeck said.

From an ACPD press release:

The Arlington County Police Department has taken a 28 year-old man into custody and charged him with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding stemming from a machete attack that occurred early this morning. Derrick Sutherland, 28, of no fixed address is currently being held without bond in the Arlington County Detention Facility.

Sutherland approached the two victims outside the Central Library at 2:50 a.m. and began arguing with them. The argument escalated and Sutherland brandished a machete, which he used to strike each victim numerous times. Both victims sustained significant non-life threatening injuries and were transported to GW Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Sutherland fled the scene immediately after the attack and remained at-large through the morning hours. However, through a collaborative effort between the Homicide/Robbery Unit and Patrol Division, officers were able to locate Sutherland in the area of Wilson Boulevard and N. Piedmont Street and take him into custody.

Crime Report: Woman ‘Mugged’ in Sister Fight

A woman had to get surgical staples in the back of her head after her sister struck her with a coffee mug, according to this week’s Arlington County Police Department crime report

The alleged incident happened early Saturday morning in Ballston.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 05/11/13, 800 block of N. Quincy Street. On May 11 at 4:20 am, an argument between sisters escalated causing one to strike the other in the back of the head with a coffee mug. The victim was transported to Virginia Hospital Center to receive surgical staples. The suspect fled the scene prior to police arrival, but a warrant was obtained for Jennie Lee, 26, of Arlington, VA.

Also in the Ballston area over the weekend, a cab driver’s jaw was broken after he was assaulted by two young men.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 05/12/13, 4300 block of N. Carlin Springs Road. At 2:58 am on May 12, a cab driver was assaulted by two subjects after paying for the fare with a credit card. The victim sustained a broken jaw and was transported to Virginia Hospital Center. The suspects fled the scene on foot and were described as white males between 25-30 years of age.
