Crime Report: Shooting and Syracuse Edition

This week’s Arlington County crime report features a Rosslyn Holiday Inn guest who’s accused of firing a gun at what he “thought” was an intruder in his room. As police dryly noted, “there was no intruder.”

RECKLESS HANDLING OF A FIREARM-ARREST 03/01/11, 1900 block of Ft. Myer Drive. On March 1 at 12:45 am, a man in a hotel though there was an intruder in his room and fired a round from a handgun. There was no intruder, and no hotel patrons were injured. Russell Wooten, 60, of Vienna, West Virginia, was charged with Reckless Handling of a Firearm and Released on a summons to appear in court.

Last weekend two men were arguing on Washington Boulevard, two blocks from the Clarendon Metro, when police say one hit the other in the face with a beer bottle. The perp was wearing an orange Syracuse basketball jersey, cops say. Also of note: the Syracuse men’s basketball team defeated Georgetown earlier in the day in a game played in D.C.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING 02/27/11, 3200 block of Washington Boulevard. On February 27 at midnight, two men argued. One struck the other in the face with a beer bottle. The suspect is described as white male in late 20’s, 5’8″ with an average build. He was wearing an orange Syracuse University basketball jersey.

Crime Report: Girls Gone Wild Edition

Two young women came to Clarendon this weekend looking to have a good time at one of our local watering holes. They both chose a bar on the 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard, the long block that includes Spider Kelly’s and Clarendon Ballroom. And, according to this week’s Arlington County crime report, they both left the bar with police in tow.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 02/05/1, 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard. On February 5 at 12:45 am, an intoxicated woman assaulted several people inside a bar. Brittany Doyle, 22, of Stafford, was charged with Assault and Battery and Drunk in Public. She was held until sober.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 02/06/11, 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard. On February 6 at 1 am, a woman punched another female inside a bar. Mindy Carreon, 21, of Fairfax, was charged with Assault and Battery and released on a summons.

Assault At Courthouse Metro Station

A man was taken into custody after a reported assault at the Courthouse Metro station around 12:30 this afternoon.

Arlington paramedics were called to evaluate the victim, who appeared to have only minor injuries. The suspect was in Metro Transit Police custody near the turnstiles when medics arrived on scene.

The incident comes on the heels of a widely-publicized, caught-on-camera assault at the L’Enfant Metro station Sunday night.

Crime Report: Towing and Parking Assaults

Parking can be a frustrating thing. If parking is sparse, finding that one parking spot can turn into a competition. And if you park in the wrong spot, getting towed is certainly not very fun.

Should you should find yourself in such a situation, however, you should remain calm. Otherwise, if you lose your cool, you could wind up in handcuffs.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 12/31/10, 4000 block of N. 5th Street. On December 31 at 5 pm, a man assaulted a tow truck driver and broke a glass window at the towing property. Steven McClinchey, 48, of Arlington, was charged with Assault and Battery and Destruction of Property.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 01/02/11, 3700 block of Columbia Pike. On January 2 at 4 pm, a man assaulted a woman regarding an argument over a parking space. Barahona Marquez, 40, of Arlington, was charged with Assault and battery. He was released on a summons.

Crime Report: Holiday Edition

Crime didn’t completely take a holiday over the weekend, but it certainly was at lower-than-usual levels.

Here are the two Grinchiest moments in Arlington, with both occurring on Christmas Eve.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING 12/25/10, 4300 block of Lee Highway. On December 25 at 3 am, a man was at a party when another man stabbed him in the arm. The suspect is described as a 25 year-old white Hispanic male, 5’6″ and 200 lbs.

ASSAULT ON POLICE-ARREST 12/24/10, 2000 block of S. Jefferson Davis Highway. On December 24 at 10:15 pm, police responded to a hotel for an intoxicated male. The man was wanted out of Fairfax County on two warrants. When officers attempted to place him in custody, he assaulted on, and fled on foot. He was located and arrested. Dejuan Butler, 28, of Faulkner, MD, was charged with Assault and battery on Law Enforcement. He was held without bond.

Then, on Monday, a suspect allegedly put his hand under a woman’s skirt as she was riding up the escalator at the Clarendon Metro.

SEXUAL BATTERY 12/27/10, 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard. On December 27 at 3:10 pm, a woman was on the metro escalator when she realized a suspect slid his hand and cell phone under her skirt. She yelled and he left the station. The suspect is described as a white Hispanic male in his early 30’s, 4’10” with short black hair. He was wearing white sneakers, khaki pants, a light-colored sweatshirt and a denim jacket.

We initially heard that the woman snapped a cell phone photo of the suspect, which could be very helpful in catching the guy. So far, however, we haven’t been able to confirm that with police.

Crime Report: Fighting in Public Edition

Arlington’s malls, bars and restaurants could have been mistaken for the set of the Jerry Springer Show over the past week, with five separate cases of violence or attempted violence.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 12/16/10, 1000 block of S. Hayes Street. On December 16 at 3:30 am, a male employee of a department store assaulted a female employee. Brian Austin, 18, of Washington D.C., was charged with Assault and Battery. He was held on a $2,500 bond.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 12/19/10, 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard. On December 19 at 2 am, a man fought with others inside a bar. The suspect knocked a woman to the ground during the struggle. Sean McCliggott, 24, of McLean, was charged with Assault and Battery. He was held on a $5,000 bond.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY 12/19/10, 1100 block of S. Hayes Street. On December 19 at 4:25 pm, two women argued in a mall bathroom, and one slapped the other. The suspect is described as an African American female with a light complexion, 5’4″, and 115 lbs. She was wearing a pink sweater and jeans.

ASSAULT BY MOB 12/19/10, 2000 block of Wilson Boulevard. On December 19 at 1:30 am, several males assaulted another male outside a restaurant. The suspects were white males in their late 20’s to early 30’s.

ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING 12/18/10, 1100 block of N. Highland Street. On December 18 at 12:45 am, a man lunged at a bouncer with a knife when he would not the let the suspect in a restaurant for free. The suspect is described as a white male with blonde or red hair, 5’9″ and 200 lbs. He was wearing a brown plaid shirt and jeans.

Man Accused of Assaulting Leaf Truck Driver

(Updated at 3:00 p.m.) A homeowner in the Woodmont neighborhood has been charged with assaulting a county leaf truck driver.

Police say Kevin Love, 46, was upset that the leaf truck vacuum didn’t pick up all the leaves on his street Saturday morning. Some sort of verbal dispute ensued, according to police spokesperson Det. Crystal Nosal. Love is then alleged to have punched the driver.

He was subsequently charged with assault and battery and released on a summons.

In an email to ARLnow.com, however, Love says the assault allegations are false.

“I was not arrested,” he said. “I never punched or touched this county employee, ever. There was a verbal dispute after this employee made a discriminatory remark directed at me, but that was the extent of it.”

“I now have to go to court over a out and out lie,” added Love, a local real estate agent. “This has been a very humiliating and damaging attack on my character.”

The county’s Department of Environmental Services said the leaf collection employee reported the incident to a supervisor. The situation is being handled as a “personnel matter,” according to a spokesperson.

How might the situation have been handled better? The county has a leaf collection hotline that residents can call to request a second pass. The phone number is 703-228-6565.

Crime Report: Taxi Drivers Attacked

Two weeks ago we reported on a taxi driver accused of forcing a young female customer to get out in a bad neighborhood, leading to her being attacked while walking home. Here are two reminders that taxi drivers themselves are often in harms way.

ATTEMPT ROBBERY-ARREST 11/29/10, 2100 block of Wilson Boulevard. On November 29 at 4:30 pm, a man approached a cab driver and tried to assault him while demanding money. Bukhari Daoud, 31, of no fixed address, was charged with Attempted Robbery and Drunk in Public. He was held without bond.

ROBBERY 11/30/10, 400 block of S. 23rd Street. On November 30 at 1 am, a man asked a cab driver for money, and stole his meter when the driver refused. The suspect also assaulted the victim. The suspect is known.

Crime Report: ‘Maybe It Was Colonel Mustard’ Edition

From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

MALICIOUS WOUNDING 10/12/10, 2900 block of S. Glebe Road. On October 12 at 3:30 am, a known suspect hit the male victim in the face with a metal candlestick.

The victim’s injury was not life-threatening, we’re told. Mr. Boddy was unavailable for comment.

The past week also saw an attempted carjacking and a case of police impersonation on Columbia Pike.

ATTEMPTED CARJACKING-ARREST 10/11/10, 4800 block of Columbia Pike. On October 11 at 12:20 am, two men approached a man sitting in his vehicle. They stated that they wanted his truck and assaulted the victim before fleeing the area. Police located the suspects. Nelson Castaneda, 18, and Nelson Garcia Recinos, 20, both of Hyattsville, MD, were charged with Attempted Carjacking. They were held without bond.

POLICE IMPERSONATION-ARREST 10/11/10, 3100 block of Columbia Pike. On October 11 at 7:40 am, a man wearing a hat that read “Police” stopped a vehicle in the middle of the roadway for an alleged traffic infraction. Mario Tellez, 50, of Falls Church, was charged with Impersonating a Police Officer. He was released on a summons.

Man Falls in Apartment Laundry Room

(Updated at 4:00 p.m. on 10/6/10) Correction: This incident was initially reported to be an assault. The man appeared to have injuries to his face consistent with an assault. However, police now say the man was drunk, implying that this was likely an accident.

It happened Tuesday afternoon on the 4300 block of North Henderson Road, two blocks from Ballston Common Mall.

The man was ultimately able to walk out of the apartment building on his own power. His face bloodied and swollen, he was put on a stretcher, placed in an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

Crime Report: Thankless Job Edition

Getting your car towed is not fun. But that doesn’t mean you have to take it out on the tow truck driver. From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 09/15/10, 600 block of S. Carlin Springs Road. On September 15 at 2:20 pm, a man assaulted a tow truck driver. Jose Merida, 44, of Arlington, was charged with Assault and Battery. He was held on a $4,000 bond.
