Columbia Pike resident Jesse McLaughlin is one of 12 nationwide finalists competing for the title of “Roommate of the Year.”

McLaughlin, a security analyst, advanced to the finals thanks to a humorous contest entry video that showcased his willingness to do the dishes, clean the bathroom, pay for pizza, make dessert and perform other feats of roommate courtesy. The video, entitled “Roommating MVP,” is narrated by a faux-British sports announcer.

McLaughlin will win free rent for a year and $10,000 cash if he can gather the most votes online by July 31. The contest is sponsored by Apartments.com.

Arlington resident and competitive cyclist Joe Praino has won a dream trip to the Tour de France after collecting the most votes in a nationwide contest.

Praino will join Team Liquigas-Cannondale at the Tour after winning the Facebook-based contest, which was sponsored by Cannondale and Peloton Magazine. As an honorary member of the U.S.-Italian team, Praino will travel in the team car and help out behind the scenes.

In addition to the all-expenses-paid overseas trip, Praino will receive a $6,000+ Cannondale SuperSix EVO road bike, cycling apparel, and a magazine subscription.

Praino won over voters on the contest’s Facebook page with a humorous, two-minute video (above) that explains why he’s always wanted to see the Tour de France up close.

The Arlington Street People’s Assistance Network is asking Arlingtonians to help them win a new van.

A-SPAN is one of 500 finalists in the Toyota 100 Cars for Good contest, which is awarding a new vehicle to 100 charitable organizations over the course of 100 days. Each day, the public can vote for one of five nonprofits via Toyota’s Facebook page.

Today, A-SPAN is up against organizations like a Florida arts center, an Illinois animal shelter, a Connecticut HIV/AID clinic and the large, nationwide service organization City Year.

“We are very excited to participate in this contest and have the chance to win a new van for outreach. We are placing more people into housing than ever before, but the first step for each of these formerly homeless people was an A-SPAN outreach staff person finding and building a connection with them,” A-SPAN Executive Director Kathleen Sibert said in a statement. “A new van will help us with this, please encourage all of your friends to vote too!”

A-SPAN has also released a video (after the jump) explaining how a van would help the organization. Vote for them here.

It’s hard to believe, but April is almost over. Along with the end of April comes the end of a great spring tradition — Crystal City’s 5K Friday races. The last race of the season will take place on Friday.

Over the past four weeks, we’ve asked photographers to head out with a camera and snap some photos of the action for our Crystal City ‘Flickr Flash’ Photo Contest. Ignoring rain and hunger pains (the races start at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays), photographers were able to capture more that 50 great shots.

We’ve now narrowed the submissions down to 10 finalists. Take a look below and vote for your three favorites. Voting will end at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. We’re offering the following prizes to the top three vote-getters:

  • 1st Prize: $200 Morton’s Crystal City gift card and a race t-shirt
  • 2nd Prize: $50 Jaleo gift card and race t-shirt
  • 3rd Prize: $25 Bozzelli’s Italian Deli gift card and race t-shirt

Thank you to everybody who participated in the contest, and good luck to the finalists!

Update on 4/8/11 — Good news for fair-weather photographers who don’t want to brave today’s rain: the contest has been extended by two weeks.

Tomorrow hundreds of runners will kick off the first Crystal City 5K Friday of the year, and we’re hosting a contest to make the evening race as competitive for photographers as it is for runners.

Feel free to use your creativity and take photos of anything race-related.

On Sunday, April 24, a panel of representatives from all four organizations will help choose ten finalists. Then it’s up to ARLnow.com readers to vote for the winning photos.

We’re offering the following prizes to the top three vote-getters:

  • 1st Prize: $200 Morton’s Crystal City gift card and a race t-shirt
  • 2nd Prize: $50 Jaleo gift card and race t-shirt
  • 3rd Prize: $25 Bozzelli’s Italian Deli gift card and race t-shirt

The winners will be announced during the race after-party at Crystal City’s FLASH photo exhibit. Happy snapping!

FotoDC’s month-long FLASH photo exhibit will kick off in Crystal City tonight.

Located on the top two floors of an office building at 2450 Crystal Drive, the show features 250 photos from 55 local photographers, a library of 150 photography books and a wine bar run by the Washington Wine Academy.

Photographers and reporters got a sneak peak at the exhibit last night. Here some of our photos from the event.

DISCLOSURE: Crystal City BID, the sponsor of FLASH, is an ARLnow.com advertiser.

As part of FLASH, ARLnow.com will be hosting a photo contest dubbed “Flickr Flash.”

The contest will challenge photographers to take photos during the first two Crystal City 5K Friday races in April and submit them to a Flickr group for recognition and prizes. Ten finalists will be chosen and will be voted on by ARLnow.com readers. The top three vote-getters will be announced at a FLASH event and will receive gift cards from local restaurants.

The contest to name Artisphere’s cafe is over, the votes are in, and the winner has been revealed.

Borrowing the last four letters of Artisphere, HERE is the new name of the cultural center’s cafe. HERE will feature a “seasonal menu of comfort food with Latin flavors made from locally-sourced and fresh ingredients.”

In addition to being a restaurant, HERE will be a full bar, a nightclub and a catering service. It’s owned by Barroso, Inc., the same group that runs Guajillo on Wilson Boulevard in Rosslyn and Casa Oaxaca in Northwest D.C.

The contest to name the cafe was organized by the Washington Post Express. More than 530 entries were submitted. HERE, which was submitted by Bonnie Imlay of Silver Spring, Md., beat out two other finalists in the final public voting: “Artesano” and “Tamién.”

To celebrate the new name, Artisphere and HERE will be holding two events at the end of the month.

First, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 31, Artisphere will be hosting a “neighborhood tasting and open house” with “samplings of the restaurant’s cuisine, live music by Brazilian jazz combo Origem and hourly drawings for lunches for two and tickets to Artisphere events.”

Then, from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, HERE is holding a launch party with more food samplings, door prizes and music by Thunderball and DJ Rex Riddem. The free event is open to the first 300 people who register for it.
