Car Crashes into House in Claremont

A Toyota Camry somehow hopped a curb, smashed a small stone wall and hit the side of a house in the Claremont neighborhood this afternoon.

The crash happened near the traffic circle at the intersection of S. Chesterfield Road and S. Dinwiddie Street, across the street from Wakefield High School. Only one vehicle was involved and there were no reported injuries. No word on whether any charges will be filed against the driver.

The car wound up in a homeowner’s garden, about five feet above street level. A large crack was visible in the base of the home’s brick chimney, about where the car struck, but it’s not known for sure whether it was actually caused by the collision.

Roads were temporarily blocked while a tow truck worked to extract the car from the yard. More photos, after the jump.

Police Directing Traffic After Crash on Columbia Pike

Police are directing traffic at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. Carlin Springs Road after a car crashed into a pole.

A black coupe suffered heavy front-end damage after slamming into the pole while heading eastbound on the Pike. Arlington firefighters were called in to help extricate the driver from the vehicle. The driver’s condition is not known at this time.

Stop lights are flashing at the intersection and Fairfax County police are directing traffic. Drivers should expect minor delays in the area.

Police Investigate Hit and Run Near Hospital

A hit and run accident sent three people to the hospital this morning.

The accident happened around lunch time on George Mason Drive, just north of Virginia Hospital Center. Initial reports suggest a van hit a sedan, sending the sedan into a pole. Three people who were in the car were brought to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the van reportedly fled the scene after the accident. Officers and a police dog searched for the driver, but were not able to find her. Shortly after the search was called off, a woman fitting the description of the van driver showed up at the scene and was searched by officers. No word on which charges, if any, will be filed.

Car Runs Off Road, Flips Over in Rosslyn

A driver was brought to the hospital after her Volvo ran off the road and flipped on its side in a small field across from the Marriott in Rosslyn.

The car was heading southbound on Fort Myer Drive, just past Key Bridge, when it hopped a curb, hit a tree and flipped over. Firefighters responded and used heavy equipment to extricate the woman from the driver’s seat.

The accident happened around 7:15 p.m., near the end of the evening rush hour. Key Bridge traffic heading into Arlington was snarled as emergency vehicles blocked all but one lane of Fort Myer Drive.

No word on what caused the car to veer off the road. The woman is expected to be okay.

Dozens Testify At Budget Hearing — More than 75 people spoke at last night’s annual County Board budget hearing. Representatives and supporters of various local human services agencies asked the Board to increase funding for their causes. One Hurt in Motorcycle Accident — A motorcyclist suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries last night after a collision with a pickup truck at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. George Mason Drive. The accident happened around 10:15 p.m. The motorcyclist was taken to George Washington University hospital for treatment.

Three-Car Wreck Shuts Down North Arlington Roads

Several Yorktown-area streets have reopened since a lunchtime wreck sent one person to the hospital.

An Audi flipped on its roof and two other cars suffered severe front-end damage in the crash at the intersection of Old Dominion Drive and Rock Spring Road. One person was taken to the hospital and reportedly evaluated for possible head injuries. Amazingly, everybody else was apparently able to walk away from the wreck.

It’s unclear how the collision happened. The speed limit on Old Dominion Drive is 35 miles per hour and there is a stop light at the intersection. Police took photos of the scene as part of an accident investigation.

Old Dominion and Rock Spring were both shut down for just over an hour.

Davies Driver Sentenced in Crash — The driver in the fatal 2009 George Washington Parkway crash that left soccer star Charlie Davies severely injured was sentenced to two years in prison Friday. Maria Espinoza was drunk when the SUV she was driving hit a guardrail near Memorial Bridge and split in half, killing her best friend and leaving Davies maimed. Davies, now playing for DC United, scored two goals in the team’s home opener at RFK Stadium on Saturday. [ESPN, NY Times, Washington Post]

Arlington Woman Rescued from Potomac River — An Arlington woman was rescued by the Coast Guard after her kayak overturned in the Georgetown Channel, near Key Bridge, just before noon on Sunday. The woman, identified at 61-year-old Jenie Upchurch, was reportedly struggling to stay afloat when a Coast Guard vessel arrived at the scene and threw her a life ring. [U.S. Coast Guard]

Several Injured in 14th Street Bridge HOV Wreck

Update at 10:40 a.m. — The accident has been cleared and traffic is moving smoothly.

Four people have been injured, two seriously, in a wreck in the northbound HOV lanes of the 14th Street Bridge.

Nearly a dozen police, fire and medic units from Arlington and the District have responded to the accident scene. Northbound HOV traffic on I-395 is backed up to Washington Boulevard.

Several vehicles were involved in the collision.

Yet Another Accident On SB I-395 at Washington Blvd

Rainy conditions have claimed yet another car on southbound I-395 near Washington Boulevard.

An SUV apparently spun out of control and hit a guardrail on the right side of the highway. The accident happened just 15-30 minutes after a rollover accident involving a Mercedes was cleared in the same area.

Virginia State Police are on the scene. So far, no injuries have been reported.

We hear that there were two or three other accidents in the same spot earlier this morning. Word to the wise: be careful if you’re driving on southbound I-395 today!

TRAFFIC ALERT — Car Flips on Its Roof on SB I-395

Update at 11:30 a.m. — The accident has been cleared and all lanes are now open.

A black Mercedes has flipped on its roof on southbound I-395 just past the Washington Boulevard exit.

Police and firefighters are on the scene reporting that the driver was able to walk away from the accident.

The wreck is in the left lane, with two right lanes getting by the accident scene. Minor delays are forming at Washington Boulevard.
