Crime Report: Mustachioed Man Pistol-Whips Ball Thrower

Sig Sauer handgun (photo via Sig Sauer)Police are looking for a man who allegedly pistol-whipped a ball-throwing bar-goer near Clarendon.

The incident took place around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23. Police say a group of friends were returning from a bar and throwing a ball around, when the ball struck a black Range Rover that was driving by.

The owner of the SUV — described as a skinny man with a moustache and a foreign accent — got out of the vehicle and allegedly pistol-whipped the victim. The suspect then fled the scene and the victim was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 03/23/13, 3300 block of N. Wilson Boulevard. At 3:33 am on March 23, three friends walking home from the bar were throwing a ball between them when it struck a moving vehicle. The driver of the black Range Rover stopped and brandished a handgun. The subject exited his vehicle and struck the victim in the right cheek with the firearm. The subject fled the scene and the victim was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’10” tall with a thin build and a mustache. He had dark hair and spoke with a foreign accent.

Also in this week’s crime report, a woman is accused of stabbing her husband twice with a kitchen knife. The alleged incident took place in an apartment three blocks from the Courthouse Metro station.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 03/20/13, 2100 block of N. 18th Street. At 6:15 pm on March 20, a subject and her husband got into a physical altercation. The subject stabbed the victim twice with a kitchen knife. The victim was stabbed once in the left side of his chest and once in his left arm. The victim was transported to George Washington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Shavonne Duncan, 46, of Arlington, VA was arrested and charged with malicious wounding. She is currently being held without bond.

Man Beaten for Drawing Genitalia on Roommate’s Face

(Updated 1:45 p.m. on 12/23/21) A prank turned violent in the Lyon Village neighborhood on Saturday (March 23) when a man reportedly was beaten for drawing a penis on his roommate’s face.

The alleged incident happened on the 3100 block of 17th Street N. According to Arlington County Police, 31-year-old James [redacted] fell asleep on his couch after a night of drinking. He woke up around 5:30 a.m. and became furious when he discovered the permanent marker drawings on his face, police said.

Police say that [redacted], suspecting his roommate, ran upstairs to where the roommate was sleeping and jumped on top of him, repeatedly punching him in the face. The commotion awakened a third roommate, who managed to separate the two.

The victim reportedly waited about an hour and a half to call the police while deciding whether or not to press charges. He did end up calling for help and police charged [redacted] with malicious wounding. The injured man’s eye was swollen shut and bleeding, so the third roommate drove him to the hospital for treatment, according to police.

Cops say the roommates admitted they sometimes play pranks on each other while intoxicated.

Crime Report: Indecent Exposures

Police are looking for a man who was allegedly masturbating while following a woman with his car.

The incident happened last Friday night in the Douglas Park neighborhood. From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

INDECENT EXPOSURE, 03/15/13, 1300 block of S. Monroe Street. At 7:30 pm on March 15, a victim observed an unknown subject masturbating while seated inside a vehicle with the door open. As the victim walked away, she noticed the subject following her in his car. The subject then parked and proceeded to exit the car and follow the victim by foot. The victim then ran into a Post Office to escape the subject, and the subject fled the scene. The subject is described as a 40-year-old black male, approximately 5’8″ tall and 200 lbs. He had dark skin, short black hair, no facial hair and a muscular build. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a beige long sleeved shirt and dark pants.

Last Thursday, police say a man was arrested for exposing himself to a woman at Arlington Central Library.

INDECENT EXPOSURE, 03/14/13, 1000 block of N. Quincy Street. At 5:30 pm on March 14, a subject exposed himself to a female victim inside the Central Library. The suspect was located a couple hours later in the area. Patrick Robert Rooney, 67, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with indecent exposure. He was held with no bond.

Police Release Mall Smash and Grab Surveillance Video

The Arlington County Police Department has released surveillance video of Tuesday’s smash and grab robbery at Pentagon City mall in the hopes the public can help identify the suspects.

The video shows four subjects entering the Tourneau retail store at 10:37 a.m. on Tuesday (March 19). Police say they headed directly to the Rolex watch display case. One of the subjects used a hammer to break the front side of the glass display case to gain access to the merchandise. Before fleeing, the four subjects managed to grab 23 Rolex watches, worth approximately $609,000. Police say the four suspects were in the store for less than 30 seconds.

All four subjects are described as being black males wearing ski masks and hooded jackets. Three were wearing all dark clothing and suspect four was wearing a red hooded jacket and dark pants. A fifth person was reportedly waiting in a getaway vehicle on the S. Hayes Street side of the mall. The vehicle is described as a charcoal gray four-door sedan.

Crime Report: Thief Comes Clean to Victim

A woman was recently arrested for breaking and entering, according to police, after she admitted to her victim that she broke into his home and stole his stuff.

From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

BURGLARY, 03/02/13, 4400 block of S. 31st Street. Between 3 pm on March 1 and 2 am on March 2, a subject entered a residence and stole various items. Several days later the suspect admitted to the victim that she had broken into his home and taken several of his belongings. The items that the suspect stole were found in the trunk of her vehicle. Kimberly Marie Vest, 28, of Woodbridge, VA was arrested and charged with breaking and entering. She is being held on a $2,500 unsecured bond.

Crime Report: Victim Beaten By Cane-Wielding Man

(Updated at 2:20 p.m.) A man was awoken last week when another man barged into his bedroom and attempted to beat him with a cane, according to the latest Arlington County crime report.

The alleged incident happened last Tuesday morning. The victim suffered injuries to his hands from the cane and was also punched in the head, according to police. He required stitches for his injuries, we’re told.

From the crime report:

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 02/26/13, 4000 block of N. 7th Street. At 9:05 am February 26, a subject forced entry into a room where a victim was sleeping. The subject swung a cane at the victim and then began to punch the victim several times in the face. The victim attempted to flee the room to safety, but the subject bit the victim on his upper left leg. The victim was eventually able to break free and had to flee the room through a window to get to safety. A roommate of the victim was able to call the police. Both the victim and the suspect were transported to Virginia Hospital Center for their injuries. Hubert Leon Willoughby, 52, of Arlington, VA was arrested and charged with malicious wounding. He is currently being held without bond.

Crime Report: Man Steals Friend’s Phone

A Maryland man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly stole a female friend’s iPhone.

The man tried to surreptitiously smuggle the phone out of his friend’s apartment during a visit, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

While his friend was walking him to his car, her phone — which has a distinctive ringtone — started to ring, Sternbeck said. The woman tried to get the phone back, but the man got in his car and started to drive away, bumping the woman with the car in the process, according to Sternbeck.

The man was later arrested when he was pulled over for having improperly tinted windows. Police made the connection to the previous incident during the traffic stop, Sternbeck said. From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

ROBBERY, 02/23/13, 1800 block of Crystal Drive. At 8 pm on February 23, a known subject stole a victim’s iPhone from her apartment. The victim chased the subject to the parking lot where she was bumped with the subject’s vehicle as he attempted to flee the scene. The subject was located during a traffic stop for improper tint approximately three hours later. Durell Adrian Hines, 20, of Capitol Heights, MD, was arrested and charged with robbery. He was held without bond.

Crime Report: Indecent Exposure in Columbia Forest

(Updated at 11:10 a.m.) A 21-year-old Arlington man was arrested and charged with indecent exposure after an incident on Monday afternoon.

Police say the man exposed himself to a woman as she walked from an apartment building in the Columbia Forest. She eventually entered 7-Eleven store, at which the man finally stopped exposing himself.

INDECENT EXPOSURE, 02/18/13, 1000 block of S. Frederick Street. At 1 pm on February 18, a subject exposed himself to a female victim on the side of an apartment building. The subject followed the victim and continued to expose himself until she entered a 7-11 store. Police located the subject a short time later and placed him in custody. Kendrick Webb Raphale, 21, of Arlington, VA, was charged with indecent exposure. He was held on a $3,000 secured bond.

Crime Report: Cab Driver Punched

An intoxicated man tried to rob a cab driver, then punched him in the face, according to this week’s Arlington County crime report.

Police say the incident started as Arlington resident Christopher Arrington, 31, was providing turn-by-turn directions to the cab driver. The driver demanded to know a specific address, at which time the men started fighting. According to police, Arrington tried to grab cash the driver had placed in a cup holder. A struggle ensued and police say Arrington punched the driver in the face.

He was arrested at the scene, on the 3100 block of Columbia Pike, according to the crime report.

ROBBERY, 02/10/13, 3100 block of S. Columbia Pike. At 2:07 am on February 10, a subject attempted to rob a cab driver and assaulted the driver by punching him in the face. Police arrived on scene and took the subject into custody. Christopher Arrington, 31, of Arlington, VA, was arrested and charged with robbery. He was held without bond.

Va. Tech Fan Breaks into Condo, Passes Out in Lobby

(Updated at 2:45 p.m.) A man in a Virginia Tech sweatshirt broke into the lobby of a Virginia Square condominium and passed out on the lobby couch, according to Arlington County Police.

The alleged incident happened early Monday morning, on the 3600 block of 10th Street N. The visibly intoxicated man reportedly damaged the door to the building and “ruined” the couch — although a police spokesman was unable to specify the nature of the damage.

According to Arlington’s daily crime report, the man left before police arrived.

Between 2 am and 7:40 am on February 10, an unknown subject forced entry into the lobby of a condominium. The subject then walked through the lobby and passed out on the lobby couch. The lobby door and couch both sustained damage. The subject is described as a white male in his 20’s, approximately 6’0” tall and 180 lbs. He has brown hair and a light complexion. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a blue and red Nationals hat and an orange VT sweatshirt.

Crime Report: Bungling Burglars Strike Out

Last week a trio of burglars went to a Columbia Pike apartment building looking for big score. They did not find what they were looking for.

On the night of Thursday, Jan. 31, the burglars broke into an apartment only to encounter two residents in the bedroom. They ordered the residents into a bathroom, looked around the apartment, but ended up leaving without taking anything. One of the suspects falsely identified himself as a police officer, according to this week’s Arlington County crime report.

IMPERSONATING A POLICE OFFICER, 02/01/13, 4300 block of S. Columbia Pike. At 11:20 pm on January 31, three unknown suspects forced entry into an apartment using a crowbar. Two victims were inside a bedroom within the apartment when the subjects entered the home. One of the suspects threatened the victims with the crowbar and ordered them to go into a bathroom. The suspects searched one of the bedrooms, and at one point a suspect identified himself as a police officer. The suspects eventually left, appearing not to take anything with them. Suspect one is described as a 6’2″ tall, 210 lb black male. At the time of the crime he was wearing a gray hoodie, black vest, green pants and black Nike boots. Suspect two is described as a black male between 5’7″ and 5’10” tall. At the time of the incident he was wearing all black snow gear, and had a mustache and goatee. Suspect three is described as a black male, 5’7″-5’10” tall, and wearing all black snow gear.

Police believe the burglars were trying to target a specific apartment, but instead broke into the wrong apartment.

Two days later, police say the same burglars came back to the same apartment building, but broke into a different apartment — the apartment they were trying to target in the first place.

“They were looking for a big score based upon the resident’s occupation,” said Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck, who declined to reveal additional details. “But they didn’t get it.”

Instead of finding a large sum of cash, or some other item of significant value, the burglars came up almost empty handed. Possibly out of frustration, police say, the thieves took a couple items of negligible value.

As the crime report notes, they also rudely left the door open after they exited the apartment.

BURGLARY, 02/03/13, 4300 block of Columbia Pike. Between 8:30 pm on February 2 and 3:37 am on February 3, an unknown subject(s) forced entry into an apartment and stole several items. The subject(s) also ransacked the apartment and left the door ajar as they exited. There is no suspect(s) description.
