Tattoo Expo Returns to Crystal City Next Week

Tattoo artists and lovers alike are coming to the Hyatt Regency Crystal City next week.

Cost for The Nation’s Tattoo Expo, which is being held from June 1-3, is $30 per day or $60 for a three-day pass. Children under 12 may attend for free with a paying adult. Members of the military can receive $10 off a three-day pass.

The expo claims to be the D.C. area’s only summertime tattoo convention.

Expo goers can get pierced and tattooed at the convention. There will also be several contests held including one awarding the best “dad bod.” Meanwhile a female only “aloha girl pinup” contest will award the first place winner $300 and a trophy.

Another contest will award the worst tattoo at the convention a gift card to cover up said tattoo.

Some of the convention’s featured artists include Ink Master stars Daniel Silva, Mike Diaz, Roly T-Rex and James Vaughn.

A Quinceañera Expo is Coming to Crystal City This Weekend

A Quinceañera Expo is coming to Crystal City’s Holiday Inn National Airport this Sunday (May 6) from 1-4 p.m.

A quinceañera is a Latin American tradition that celebrates a girl’s 15th birthday.

The festivities mark her transition from childhood to adulthood in a similar way to a Sweet Sixteen.

The expo will feature a fashion show with the latest styles in quinceañera gowns, a DIY workshop, and a seminar on some “new inventions.”

General admission tickets cost $5. VIP tickets, which include a Dulce Quince Magazine shirt, cost $10.

Dr. Ruth to Speak at Ballston Common Mall

Dr. Ruth Westheimer (courtesy photo)Famed octogenarian sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer is slated to speak at an event in Ballston next month.

Dr. Ruth has been added to the agenda of the Beacon 50+ Expo, to be held on the third level of Ballston Common Mall from noon to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26. The 86-year-old will be talking about and autographing her latest book.

The free event will also feature “expert speakers, health screenings, informative resources, technology education and entertainment for older adults and their families,” according to a press release.

More than 100 exhibitors are expected to be on hand, and “giveaways and doors prizes will be plentiful.” The keynote speaker at the event is Dr. Robert Fischell, inventor of the rechargeable pacemaker, the implantable insulin pump, and dozens of other “life-changing medical devices.”

Another 50+ Expo will be held in Maryland — at the Silver Spring Civic Center on Sunday, Oct. 19.

APS Announces New Make-Up Plan — After losing two additional school days this week due to snow, Arlington Public Schools plans to make March 31 — previously a teacher grade preparation day — a full make-up day. If there are no additional school closures due to weather, APS will maintain its Memorial Day holiday and spring break plans. [Arlington Public Schools]

Delays on Blue, Orange Lines This Weekend — Orange and Blue Line trains will run every 20 minutes this weekend, starting at 10:00 tonight, due to track work between Foggy Bottom and Clarendon on the Orange Line and Arlington Cemetery on the Blue Line. Also, the Metro Center stop will be closed to allow for Silver Line sign installations. [WMATA]

Home Show and Garden Expo Returns Next Week

Arlington Home Show and Expo logoThe Arlington Home Show and Garden Expo is back for 2014 on Saturday, March 8.

The annual event allows homeowners, builders, landscapers and others with interest to see the trends in home and yard improvement over the last year. The show is free to the public and runs from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Community Center (3501 2nd Street S.).

There will be 80 specialists, as well as county staff, on hand to answer questions in addition to seminars and exhibits. According to the county’s press release, one of the most popular seminars, “The Landlord Seminar,” is back this year to help “explain issues related to landlord/tenant law.”

This will be the eighth annual Home Show and Garden Expo, sponsored by the county’s Department of Community Planning, Housing and Develeopment. This year, for the first time, there will be free antiques appraisal and a seminar called “Understanding Condominium Living,” led by a real estate attorney.

The first 100 attendees will receive door prizes and all in attendance will have a chance to win a Google Nexus 7 tablet.

Volunteers Needed for Green Expo on St. Patrick’s Day

The group Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment is asking for volunteers to help keep the green in St. Patrick’s Day. Well, not exactly the Irish green — but the environmental green.

On March 17, ACE is holding its third annual Green Living Expo from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Washington-Lee High School. The event focuses on helping residents find practical ways to “green up” their lifestyles. Visitors will find green living seminars, a variety of local and national exhibitors, children’s activities, a raffle, sustainable eating food sales and cooking demonstrations.

The expo is free and open to the pubic, but the event is still short on volunteers. Extra help is needed from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., organizers say. Anyone who wants to lend a hand can get more information by calling 703-228-6427.

Northern Virginia Housing Fair Coming to Arlington

Arlington will host the second annual Northern Virginia Housing Expo this year.

The event features dozens of exhibits “showcasing both homeownership and rental opportunities and resources throughout Northern Virginia.” There are also free workshops that will help prepare attendees for renting or buying a home.

The housing expo is produced by the Fairfax-based nonprofit AHOME, in cooperation with the Virginia Housing Development Authority and numerous Northern Virginia localities, including Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun and Falls Church.

The expo is being held at Washington-Lee High School (1301 N. Stafford Street) between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24. The inaugural expo was held at Alexandria’s T.C. Williams High School last June.

Free Gardening Classes at Arlington Home Show

Is your garden or yard losing its luster?  No need to worry, help is on the way.  Coming up on Saturday, April 10, at the Arlington Home Show and Expo, two garden-specific classes will be presented by the Virginia Cooperative Extension and Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia.

Starting at 10:15 a.m. there will be a class called “Garden Soil Testing! How and Why” that will include a free test kit for all participants. Later in the day, at 3:00 p.m., a class titled “How to Catch a Squirrel:  Solutions to Common Garden Problems” promises valuable tips for beginners and experienced gardeners alike.

There’s a ton to learn about gardening — proper mulching, watering, fertilizing, etc. — but these free classes should be a good start for any green thumb looking to keep their yard pristine and make their garden yield better results.

Other classes offered at the home show will pay special attention to eco-friendly home building and remodeling. Among the classes being offered are “No Cost and Low Cost Ways to Reduce Energy Usage”  and “Green Your Home From Soup to Nuts.”

Arlington County representatives will also be attending the Expo to answer questions about permits, zoning and inspections.

The Expo is being held at the Walter Reed Community Center at 2909 16th Street South.

Date Set for Arlington Home Show and Expo

The annual Arlington Home Show and Expo will return next month with numerous opportunities to learn about the latest trends in home improvement and green technology.

The expo is being held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, at the Walter Reed Community Center (2909 16th St. S.).
