It’s time to protect those sensitive plants and drain that outdoor plumbing.

Arlington is expected to get its first freeze of the season overnight tonight. The county and most of the D.C. region is under a Freeze Warning as a result.

* WHERE…Portions of central, northern, northeast, and southern Maryland, The District of Columbia, central and northern Virginia, and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.

* WHEN…From 11 PM this evening to 10 AM EDT Thursday.

* IMPACTS…Frost and freeze conditions will kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly. Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing.

Protect those sensitive plants and that outdoor plumbing now — the potential for freezing overnight temperatures has prompted a Freeze Warning for Arlington and other parts of the D.C. area.

The first freeze of the season is expected to happen tonight in Arlington.

With overnight temperatures expected to dip as low as 30 degrees, now is the time to protect sensitive plants and to turn off the valves leading to outdoor water pipes and hose bibbs, allowing them to drain.

The first freeze signals the end of the growing season and the end of Frost Advisories and Freeze Warnings until next season. The growing season has already ended in the outer reaches of the D.C. area.

The warning means that temperatures overnight may dip below freezing and kill unprotected plants. In other words: go get your garden covered now. Plus, the water line to your garden hose is also in danger of freezing.

The National Weather Service says a mass of cold air will bring freezing temperatures to the area, potentially damaging or killing sensitive plants.

Arlington County and the D.C. region will be under a freeze watch from Friday evening until Saturday morning as cold temperatures descend on the area.

An Arctic blast of cold air arriving tonight (Thursday) will bring temperatures in the 20s on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service said sensitive plants may be damaged or killed, and NWS recommends protecting from the cold.

Snow falls near Columbia PikeArlington and much of the region is under a Wind Advisory from 3-10 p.m. Saturday, and a Freeze Warning from midnight to 10 a.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service says wind gusts up to 50 mph could cause scattered damage and freezing temperatures in the 20s could kill sensitive plants.

The one-two punch of wintry weather follows bouts of snow showers across the area this morning.
