An Arlington County hazardous materials team has been dispatched to Fort Myer to investigate a white powder that reportedly fell out of a package mailed to the base.

The building that houses the installation’s personnel office has been evacuated while hazmat crews determine whether the substance could be harmful.

Initial reports suggest that the package contains spices mailed from a family member to someone stationed at the base.

Update at 4:00 p.m. — The substance is not harmful. The scene is being cleared.

With gunfire at Pentagon earlier today, another emergency response in the area may be startling. But this one has nothing to do with this morning’s events.

Crews from the Arlington Fire Department and from the Pentagon’s environmental response squad are on the scene of a possible hazmat situation at the Navy Exchange gas station on South Joyce Street.

Initial reports suggest that an employee smelled a strong odor of gas and detected a possible leak. Crews are now investigating.

Arlington firefighters and the hazardous materials team responded to the Lyon Village Shopping Center around 12:20 this afternoon for a strong chemical odor. Several people in the Starbucks reported feeling ill as a result of the odor.

Firefighters went up to the roof and came down with a bucket of epoxy that was being used for some sort of roofing work.

A building inspector and a health inspector are on their way to the shopping center to evaluate the situation.

The Starbucks appeared to be closed, but all other stores in the shopping center — including popular lunch spots The Italian Store and BGR The Burger Joint — are still open.

Update at 12:55 p.m. — The building and health inspector are on the scene, and fire crews are packing up.

The fire department is on the scene at the headquarters of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in Virginia Square for a report of strong gas fumes in the parking garage.

Initial reports suggest two people who were in the garage are now being treated after feeling lightheaded.

Parts of North Nelson Street and Fairfax Drive are shut down due to the large Hazmat response.

Update at 11:25 a.m. — Firefighters are investigating the incident as a possible gasoline leak from a vehicle. Some of the units are now leaving the scene.

A Hazmat team from Alexandria was part of the response.

Update at 3:18 p.m. — We’re told that the situation is under control. The powder does not appear to be dangerous.

An Arlington County hazardous materials team has responded to an office tower at 1001 N. 19th Street in Rosslyn. Initial reports suggest that an employee on the 12th floor opened a letter from a former employee and white powder fell out.

So far, there are no reports of anyone in the office becoming sick as a result of the white powder.

The building is the headquarters of FBR Capital Markets, a large investment bank. It’s not clear whether the office involved belongs to FBR or another tenant.

The Arlington Fire Department is on the scene of a hazmat situation at N. Stuart St. & 9th St. N., near the Ballston Metro. Initial reports suggest a truck is leaking fuel into a storm drain.

Update at 3:00 p.m. — An ambulance was called for a man who was complaining of chest pains, apparently caused by the fumes. The hazmat situation itself appears to be under control.
