BREAKING: House Fire in Penrose

(Updated at 9:25 a.m.) Firefighters from Arlington County and surrounding jurisdictions battled a house fire in the Penrose neighborhood this morning.

The two-alarm fire broke out in the basement of a home at the corner of S. Fillmore Street and 1st Road S. shortly before 8:30 a.m. The fire spread, prompting firefighting efforts in the attic as well as in the basement.

Just after 8:50 a.m., it was announced that the fire had been extinguished, though some light smoke was still coming from the home’s windows.

No injuries were reported. The home’s owner could be seen talking to fire investigators.

S. Fillmore Street, a commuter route, remained shut down between 2nd Street S. and Route 50 as of 9:25 a.m., as emergency vehicles remained parked across the road. Via its Twitter account, the fire department warned drivers to expect delays in the area.

ACFD Tackles Chimney Fire in Lyon Park

Billowing black smoke coming from a home’s chimney and roof prompted an Arlington County Fire Department response this morning.

The chimney fire was first reported shortly after 9:30 a.m., at a home at the intersection of N. Fillmore Street and 2nd Street N.

At least two people were inside the house at the time, a fire department spokeswoman confirmed. Both escaped from the smoky structure unharmed.

Firefighters used chainsaws to get access to the chimney and extinguish the fire before it could spread. Some water damage from the firefighting effort was reported in the home.

Two blocks of N. Fillmore Street were closed as a result of fire apparatus on the scene.

ACFD Battles House Fire in N. Arlington

(Updated at 10:20 p.m.) A fire broke out in the basement of a house in Arlington’s Williamsburg neighborhood tonight.

Firefighters were dispatched to the home, on the 6200 block of 30th Street N., shortly before 9 p.m. Fire was reported in the basement, with extension to the first floor of the house.

The fire was brought under control within about 15 minutes. There were no reports of injuries but extensive damage, including a collapsed floor, was reported.

Video: Smoky Morning Fire Along Columbia Pike

Firefighters and a couple of extinguisher-wielding workers made quick work of a smoky garage fire along Columbia Pike this morning.

Arlington County firefighters were dispatched to a report of a fire on the 1800 block of Columbia Pike, near Washington Blvd, around 9:45 a.m.

Upon arriving units found a small fire in a screened-in patio area attached to a home’s detached garage. The fire had scorched the roofline of the patio and part of the garage, but had been kept in check by an off-duty Prince George’s County firefighter and a Dominion Power worker who were working on the block and spotted the smoke, according to a fire department spokesman.

The workers used a fire extinguisher to battle the flames. A resident was inside the home at the time and may have been alerted to the fire by a passerby. No injuries were reported.

Deputy Fire Marshal Paul Frank described the damage as minimal, mostly confined to the roof of the structure. He said a preliminary investigation indicates that the fire may have been caused by Christmas lights that were being used as “permanent mood lighting” for the porch. The lights likely ignited some plastic blinds, he said.

Using Christmas lights as permanent lighting is “inadvisable,” said Frank.

(Updated at 11:30 a.m.) Firefighters battled a house fire in the Donaldson Run neighborhood around 10:20 p.m. last night (July 4).

The blaze broke out in the garage of a home on the 2300 block of N. Randolph Street, not far from the Stratford School (H-B Woodlawn). The fire extended into part of the home itself.

Via Twitter, the Arlington County Fire Department said that the flames were extinguished by 11:15 p.m. and all of the home’s occupants were accounted for.

Photos showed firefighters in full gear hauling pet kennels out of the home. A photographer on scene said one dog and two cats were rescued.

A fire department spokesman could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning, but ACFD sent the following tweet after the initial publication of this article.

House Fire Near TJ Middle School

Firefighters battled a house fire two blocks from Thomas Jefferson Middle School this morning.

The fire broke out around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of 1st Road S. and S. Glebe Road.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within 15-20 minutes. One person was treated by paramedics as a result of the blaze.

ACFD Battling House Fire in Bluemont

Arlington and Fairfax County firefighters are battling a house fire in the Bluemont neighborhood.

The blaze was reported just after 7 p.m., near the intersection of 6th Street and N. Kensington Street, in the attic of a home on 6th Street.

Firefighters are reporting that they have the flames under control. They’re also looking into the possibility that the fire started as the result of a lightning strike.

BREAKING: House Fire in North Arlington

Arlington County firefighters are on the scene of a house fire in the North Arlington neighborhood of Dover-Crystal.

ACFD responded to a house on the 2700 block of N. Randolph Street for a report of a mattress on fire inside the home. Upon arriving on scene, firefighters saw smoke coming from the house and found fire on the second floor, according to scanner traffic.

No one was reported to be inside the house when rescuers arrived. No injuries have been reported and as of 2:40 p.m. the fire was said to be extinguished.

Update at 3:05 p.m. — The fire was confined to the home’s bedroom, says ACFD.
