Pentagon Row to Host 80’s Night on Saturday

Pentagon Row will be bringing the 80s back Saturday night.

The shopping center will host an “80’s Night” event from 6-10 p.m. at its outdoor skating rink. The event will include a costume contest and a live DJ.

Warm weather is expected Saturday, with forecasters predicting a high temperature of 61 degrees.

‘Frost Fest’ Planned at Pentagon Row Ice Rink

The Pentagon Row ice skating rink in 80 degree heat on Nov. 6, 2015You might not yet be in the mood for thoughts of ice and the holidays, given today’ record 80 degree heat, but ice skating is currently underway at Pentagon Row.

The ice rink opened for the season on Sunday. The rink looked a bit more like a pool than a winter wonderland this afternoon, but that didn’t deter a few determined skaters wearing shorts and short sleeves.

Pentagon Row is planning a new winter-themed event at the rink this year. A month from now, on Saturday, Dec. 5, the shopping center will hold “Frost Fest” from 5-8 p.m.

The event will feature on-ice fireworks display, ice sculptures, fire performers and a $1,000 giveaway, according to a flyer.

Pentagon Row Ice Rink to Open Nov. 1

Ice skating rink at Pentagon Row on 11/3/14In a sign of the season, the ice rink at Pentagon Row is less than three weeks away from opening.

The ice rink will open starting Nov. 1, according to the Pentagon Row Twitter account. It will remain open during the cold weather months until March 15, 2016.

With the exception of special expanded hours around holidays, the public skating hours at the rink start at 10 a.m. on weekends and noon on weekdays, closing between 7 and 11 p.m. depending on the day.

In past years, Pentagon Row has created artificial snowfall on the rink during the month of December.

Pentagon Row Ice Skating to End With Party

Ice skating rink at Pentagon Row on 11/3/14Sunday is the last day of ice skating for the season at Pentagon Row, and the shopping center plans to end the season with a party.

On Saturday, from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., the ice rink at 1201 S. Joyce Street will host a “Decades Night on Ice” party, in which participants are encouraged to dress according to their favorite decade.

“A DJ will be spinning the best tunes of each decade starting with the 60s at 6 pm, then the 70s at 7 pm, the 80s at 8 pm, and the 90s at 9 pm, through 10 pm,” according to a PR rep.

Admission for adults is $9, for children 12 and under and seniors 55 and up it’s $8. Skate rental, for those who don’t have their own, is $3.

Just don’t expect a throwback to this winter’s cold for the party. While snow is expected on Friday, the first day of spring, on Saturday the high temperature is expected to reach the upper 50s.

Holiday Events in Arlington This Month

There are numerous events around the county this month, from holiday markets to ice skating “winter spectaculars.”

Here’s a selection of some of the more notable events in the area:

  • Shirlie Lights Up the Village, an annual tree lighting event with live music, carriage rides and a visit from Santa Claus, will take place in Shirlington Village on Dec. 3 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • This Friday, Dec. 5, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Miracle on 23rd Street is back for another year. At the Linden Resources at 750 23rd Street S., Santa Claus will ride through on an Arlington County Fire Department truck, kicking off an evening of children’s activities and holiday music.
  • On Dec. 5 and 6, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., the Rosslyn Business Improvement is bringing back the Rosslyn Holiday Market for another year. More than 35 vendors with products as diverse as soaps, gourmet popcorn, metalworks and French macarons will be on hand to offer shoppers heaps of gift options. After Friday’s market closes, the BID will hold a ceremony lighting up Rosslyn’s skyline.
  • Pentagon Row is hosting “Let It Row,” a winter event at its ice rink, on Saturday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. The event is free and features a DJ and a “s’mores bar.”
  • For the first time, Penrose Square on Columbia Pike is hosting its own “Winter Wonderland” event, on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 1:00-5:00 p.m. They will have their own Santa Claus available for pictures, plus carolers, hot chocolate and cookies from Giant and ornament decoration stations. The event will close with a tree lighting ceremony in the breezeway outside Giant.
  • Market Common Clarendon, at the intersection of Clarendon Blvd and N. Edgewood Street, is hosting a “Winter Wonderland,” on Saturday Dec. 13. This free event is replete with Santa Clause on a fire truck at noon, ice carvings and characters in life-size snow globes.
  • The Arlington Career Center, at 816 S. Walter Reed Drive, will host this year’s Arlington Holiday Bazaar on Dec. 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. There will be pizza provided by RedRocks, more than 40 vendors, singers from the Wakefield High School choir and manicures from Career Center students.

Pentagon Row Ice Skating Rink Now Open

If the weekend’s wind and cold temperatures weren’t enough of a sign that winter is coming, here’s another: the ice skating rink at Pentagon Row is now open.

The rink opened for the season on Saturday. It usually remains open through March.

With the exception of special holiday hours around Christmas and New Year’s, the public skating hours at the rink are:

  • Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 or 10:00 p.m., depending on rink rentals
  • Monday-Wednesday: Noon – 10:00 p.m.
  • Thursday: Noon – 7:00 or 10:00 p.m., depending on rink rentals
  • Friday: Noon – 11:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.

Skating fees are $8 for adults and $7 for children (12 and under) and seniors (55 and up). Skate rentals are $3.

The rink was expanded last year as part of a renovation of the Pentagon Row plaza.

Pentagon Row Ice Skating Ends Sunday

Pentagon Row ice skating rink in 70+ degree weatherThere may be a major snow storm that’s threatening to wallop the Mid-Atlantic next week, but some signs of spring are here nonetheless.

Among them: the ice skating rink at Pentagon Row will be closing after Sunday.

The rink, at 1201 S. Joyce Street, is scheduled to be open from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday. It will then close until mid-fall.

Following the closure of the ice rink, the rink will be dismantled and transformed into an artificial turf lawn and public plaza, which will host concerts and other events this summer.

Military Tribute Night at Pentagon Row Ice Rink

Pentagon Row ice rinkThe newly renovated ice rink at Pentagon Row will celebrate a special holiday event for military families on Friday (November 22).

Tomorrow is Military Tribute Night from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the rink. All members of the military and their families will skate free with a military ID.

The rink’s grand re-opening celebration will still take place from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7. There will be snow at the ice rink every night from December 7 through January 1, at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.

Pentagon Row Ice Rink Opens Next Week

Newly renovated Pentagon Row ice rink to open on November 15The plaza at Pentagon Row may still look like a major construction site following months of renovations, but the ice rink is scheduled to open for the season next week.

The site has been under construction since April, but workers aren’t worried about finishing in time for the rink opening next Friday, November 15.

“That’s how it works, it doesn’t look like anything for a while and then it suddenly appears,” a worker said.

In addition to a larger rink there will be a new stone fire pit. New features that customers can enjoy in warmer weather include a turf lawn, revamped outdoor dining areas and lighted water fountains.

The grand re-opening celebration will take place from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7. Attendees can expect live entertainment and giveaways. Plus, regardless of whether there’s any natural snow, there will be snow at the ice rink every night from December 7 through January 1. Skate among the snowflakes at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. each night.

Major Renovations Start at Pentagon Row

The owner of Pentagon Row announced this morning that major renovations to the shopping center’s plaza are now underway.

The renovations, approved by the Arlington County Board last March, will include an expanded ice rink during the winter, a turf lawn during the summer, revamped outdoor dining areas, 1,500 square feet of new retail and dining space, lighted water fountains and a stone fire pit.

Pentagon Row on 4/2/13Work on the project began on Monday and is expected to run through November, wrapping up in time for the grand reopening of the ice rink. Other parts of the plaza will reopen starting late this summer, according to a rep for Pentagon Row owner Federal Realty Investment Trust.

“The plaza was thoughtfully redesigned to cater to the lifestyle of the Arlington community and customer to create a year-round experience,” FRIT said in a press release, below.

This year’s Rock the Row outdoor concert series will still be held despite the construction, according to spokeswoman Molly Hippolitus, and Pentagon Row stores will remain open.

Federal Realty Investment Trust announces today that the Pentagon Row plaza will undergo a major renovation, which will include an expanded ice rink, enhanced outdoor dining areas, added retail space, and improved public gathering places with an expansive turf feature, new water fountains, and new stone fire pit. Construction began April 1, 2013 and the new plaza will be completed and opened to the public in phases beginning late summer 2013. The final project will be complete by November 2013 in time for the ice rink grand re-opening celebration.

The plaza was thoughtfully redesigned to cater to the lifestyle of the Arlington community and customer to create a year-round experience. The addition of an expansive, functional turf feature will host gatherings in warm weather and events such as the 2014 Rock at the Row Summer Concert Series, and an expanded ice rink will be available in the winter months. The additional 1,500 square feet of retail and dining space will energize the plaza core and feature a defined café dining area. The addition of an interactive water feature and stone fire pit will provide year-round amenities for visitors to enjoy.

Pentagon Row retailers and restaurants will remain open during construction.
