Police Investigating Shooting in DoD Office Building — Arlington County police are investigating a fatal shooting in the Defense Department’s Taylor building, at 2530 Crystal Drive in Crystal City. The shooting happened this morning and initial reports suggest it was self-inflicted.

Men Charged With Firing Shotguns at Cars in Lyon Village

Two drunk men in their early 20s went on a vandalism spree Saturday morning, with a shotgun as their weapon of choice, according to Arlington County Police.

The shootings happened around 2:20 a.m. Saturday, on the 2800 block of Key Blvd in Lyon Village, police say.

“The suspects advised that they were intoxicated and wanted to remain in the area until sober,” ACPD spokeswoman Ashley Savage told ARLnow.com. “That’s when they retrieved the shotgun, walked through the neighborhood and discharged multiple rounds.”

Two men, from Springfield and Falls Church, were arrested with the help of a description provided by a witness. They are now facing numerous charges including discharge of a firearm in a public place and destruction of property.

(Updated 4:55 p.m.) A man has been found dead inside a residence on N. Adams Street where police were investigating a shots fired called.

There is no threat to the public, according to Arlington County Police, and the investigation is ongoing.

Police said sheriff’s deputies were serving an eviction notice when they heard a single gunshot.

Officers responded to reports of gunshots being heard on the 2000 block of N. Adams Street, near the Lyon Village neighborhood, around noon Tuesday.

Department spokeswoman Ashley Savage said police were trying to determine whether shots were fired from inside the building.

A local resident reported seeing nearly a dozen police cars at the nearby intersection with Lee Highway.

According to scanner traffic, police were joined in the investigation by sheriff’s deputies, and were searching inside the apartment building as well as around its perimeter. Other officers were directing vehicles around the scene and pedestrians going in and out of the building lobby.

Lyon Village Residents Thank Cops With Free Dinner

Arlington County Police Department officers got free cold-cut sandwiches, cookies and iced tea last night as a thank-you for their work in Lyon Village.

The Lyon Village Citizens’ Association gave the dinner to about 20 cops at the neighborhood’s community house during the officers’ breaks, said John Carten, a member of the organization’s executive committee.

Locals sought to show their appreciation for the cops as a growing number of police controversies across the United States have made national headlines, Carten said.

The county’s officers are “always responsive” at community meetings and on patrol in Lyon Village, he said.

“We just wanted to let them know we are behind them,” Carten said.

Street Closed for Water Main Break in Lyon Village

One block of N. Herndon Street in Lyon Village is closed due to a water main break.

The break happened below the road, between N. Jackson Street and Key Blvd. Crews are on scene preparing to repair the water main.

Repairs are expected to be completed around 11 p.m. Between 5 and 20 water customers are affected, according to Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services spokeswoman Jessica Baxter.

Homeowner Struck With Bottle During Lyon Village Burglary

(Updated at 3:55 p.m.) Police have released new information about an attack in Lyon Village that sent a man to the hospital with a serious head injury.

Arlington County Police say that the victim, who was struck in the head with a bottle, was a homeowner who discovered a man in his house during a residential burglary.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. on the 1800 block of N. Adams Street, near the intersection with Lee Highway.

Police say the victim was at home during the break-in, but at first didn’t hear the suspect. When he discovered the burglar in the house, he confronted him and a struggle ensued in the kitchen.

During the struggle, the suspect grabbed a bottle and hit the victim over the head with it, causing a “severe laceration,” according to Arlington County Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage. The suspect then fled on food.

The homeowner, bleeding profusely, made his way to a neighbor’s house. The neighbor then called police to report the assault.

The victim was transported via ambulance to Virginia Hospital Center with what’s described as a non-life-threatening injury. Police found a large amount of blood on the ground, including on the neighbor’s front step, and recovered a pair of bloody gloves, according to scanner traffic.

Police are still investigating the incident but currently believe that the attacker did not know the victim. The suspect is described as a 5’7″ black male in his 50s.

Earlier in the investigation, police said that they believed the victim was struck while walking down the street.

Police Conducting Death Investigation at Apartment Building Near Lyon Village

Arlington County Police are conducting a death investigation at the Fort Strong Apartments near Lyon Village.

Police responded to the complex on the 2000 block of N. Daniel Street, just off Lee Highway, around 2:30 p.m. for a report of a man stabbing himself with a knife.

Arriving officers told dispatchers that there was a man down and asked paramedics to expedite to the scene. Shortly thereafter, however, it was reported that the man had died.

The man’s wife and child were in an adjacent apartment at the time of the incident, according to initial reports.

A police spokeswoman confirmed that investigators were remaining on scene to investigate the man’s death. There is no threat to the public, police said.

Video Allegedly Shows Lyon Village Bike Theft

(Updated at 10:05 a.m.) A video on Reddit shows a man allegedly stealing a bike from a porch of home on Key Blvd in Lyon Village.

The video was originally uploaded last week but was posted on a Reddit thread yesterday, with the comment that the thief had not been caught as of that morning.

The video, captured by a home security camera, shows a man with long hair and wearing a backpack, short sleeve graphic t-shirt and pants and sneakers. The camera catches him glancing at a window in the house and then sneaking up the porch. He then walks off the porch with a bicycle.

Redditor biikesnow, who reposted the video, said on the thread that it is not his/her video or bike.

“Took this video from the listserv. I have seen numerous bikes left on porches/children’s bikes left on front lawns overnight around the neighborhood. Hopefully this video proves that no neighborhood is invincible to theft and that everyone should lock up (if for some reason you decide to leave your bike outside),” the poster said.

Asked about the video, Arlington County Police Department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said: “We did receive an online report, however, this was the first our detectives had seen the video.”

Woman Fends Off Attacker Near Lyon Village Park

A woman was attacked near Lyon Village Park early Saturday morning, the fourth such attack in almost two weeks.

The attack occurred around 2:45 a.m., on the 1900 block of N. Highland Street. Police say the victim was walking home from the bars in Clarendon when a man approached her from behind, put a pillow case over her head and threw her to the ground.

The woman kicked the attacker several times and was able to scream “help,” prompting him to grab the pillow case and run off.

The suspect is described as an either black or Hispanic man, 5’8″ tall with an average build.

Police say the victim did not report the crime until the next morning, making it difficult to track down the suspect.

“We want to emphasize that anyone who’s a victim of a crime should dial 911 immediately,” said Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

Sternbeck said that the police department is devoting significant resources to investigating this and three other recent attacks on women.

On July 25, a man sexually assaulted a woman near Courthouse; she kicked him in the groin and he fled the scene. On July 31 a woman running alone on the W&OD Trail as grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground; she screamed and her attacker ran off. On Aug. 1 a woman in Buckingham was also grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground; she bit the attacker’s finger and he ran off.

Despite some variance in the suspect descriptions, Sternbeck said detectives are trying to determine whether the attacks may be related.
