Columbia Pike outdoor movie (photo via CPRO)(Updated at 1:00 p.m.) Starting tonight, neighborhoods along Columbia Pike are getting in on the summer outdoor movie scene.

The Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO) is bringing back outdoor movies in Penrose Square every Saturday from this week (June 21) through August 30. This year, CPRO also will offer movies every other Thursday in the plaza of the new Arlington Mill Community Center, starting tonight and running through September 11.

CPRO is trying out something different at Arlington Mill by offering a couple of Spanish movies subtitled in English, and vice versa. The push for diversity in the movie selection isn’t just for Spanish-speaking cultures. CPRO Executive Director Takis Karantonis notes the movie “The Visitor” deals with issue of immigrating to the United States from Africa and the Middle East.

“We really are very interested in bringing movies from the many cultures we have along Columbia Pike,” said Karantonis. “We will test to see how it works. We realize not everybody is happy with subtitles all of the time, so we will collect feedback and adapt according. Our goal is to make the movies as linguistically accessible as possible.”

Movies begin around 8:30 p.m., or when it becomes dark enough. In case of inclement weather, event changes will be posted on the CPRO websiteFacebook page and Twitter feed.

The Arlington Mill movie schedule follows:

  • June 19 — La Misma Luna (Spanish subtitles)
  • July 3 — Life of Pi
  • July 17 —  No se Aceptan Devoluciones (English subtitles)
  • July 31 — The Visitor
  • August 14 — Sofia y el Terco (Spanish subtitles)
  • August 28 — El Estudiante (English subtitles)
  • September 11 — Avatar

Below is the schedule for movies at Penrose Square:

  • June 21 — Mama Mia!
  • June 28 — The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
  • July 5 — Sideways
  • July 12 — Inception
  • July 19 — Notting Hill
  • July 26 — Little Miss Sunshine

Aerial view of Rosslyn (Photo courtesy Pete Roof/Alt Gobo MediaWorks LLC)Residents and visitors to Rosslyn will have plenty to do this summer with a lineup of events starting next month.

The Rosslyn Business Improvement District has already announced its office-themed outdoor summer movie schedule, which will run on Friday nights from May 30 to Aug. 22. In addition to the films, events for dogs and their owners, fashion and fitness fans and a farmers market are on their way.

Starting next Friday, May 2, Rosslyn will host a “Yappy Hour” at Le Méridien Arlington, 1121 19th St. N. on the terrace in front of Amuse. Dogs are welcome — and the pooches will have some treats — and cocktails and appetizers are available to their owners, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

In addition, Lava Barre, which will be opening in Rosslyn soon, is offering free outdoor classes every Wednesday at Gateway Park from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Participants need to register are only required to bring a bottle of water and a mat for the exercises, which incorporate techniques from yoga, ballet and pilates.

Every Thursday afternoon, along N. Oak Street, the Rosslyn farmers market and outdoor concert will return. The market features a handful of booths with vendors selling baked goods, produce and artisanal crafts. In the courtyard in front of Kanpai Sushi and Allspice Catering and Cafe, a new performer will stage a show every week.

Starting May 16 will be Fashion Truck Fridays, when a slew of fashion trucks — the boutique equivalent of a food truck — will make their way to N. Lynn Street from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. every week until Sept. 26.

Screenshot from 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' trailer, showing part of Rosslyn

Rosslyn has a cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which opened to a record-setting $96.2 million in box office sales this past weekend.

The superhero flick is set in D.C., but much of the action centers around the high-rise headquarters of the spy agency S.H.I.E.L.D., which oddly appears to be built on Roosevelt Island. As a result, Rosslyn can be seen in the background of many shots.

“The filmmakers did an excellent job of showing off the Rosslyn skyline and waterfront (along with the National Mall) throughout the film,” one local moviegoer told ARLnow.com. “Most movies that take place in D.C. rarely get it right, but you can clearly see a number of Arlington landmarks like the Rosslyn skyline, River Place Apartments, and the Key Bridge Marriott.”

Some of that Rosslyn skyline is visible in the screenshot above, taken from a television commercial for the film.

Office Space posterThe Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival, the Rosslyn Business Improvement District’s weekly summer film series at Gateway Park, will have a work theme for 2014.

Starting with “Office Space” on May 30, every Friday night will have a movie set in an office of some kind.

The Rosslyn BID said the movies are meant to portray office life as “honest, funny, goofy, and just plain entertaining.”

The full lineup is as follows:

  • May 30 — Office Space
  • June 6 — The Devil Wears Prada
  • June 13 — Horrible Bosses
  • June 20 — Thank You For Smoking
  • June 27 — Two Weeks Notice
  • July 11 — The Internship
  • July 18 — How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days
  • July 25 — Up in the Air
  • August 1 — Nine to Five
  • August 8 — Empire Records
  • August 15 — Miss Congeniality
  • August 22 — Anchorman

Gateway Park is at 1300 Lee Highway, between N. Nash and Lynn Streets. The movies start at 8:00 p.m., but moviegoers who show up early can participate in games and giveaways.

Ballston Regal theater closed due to flooding Ballston Regal theater closed due to flooding

Update at 8:45 p.m. — First Down Sports Bar and Grill had to shut down tonight, also due to a burst water pipe. From the businesses’ Facebook page: “We have had to close down suddenly for tonight because of a water pipe burst. Hopefully, we’ll be back up and running tomorrow. We will have an update on here as soon as we figure it out. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Update at 8:35 p.m. — Tonight’s Arlington County Democratic Committee debate for County Board candidates was briefly evacuated tonight when a reported burst pipe triggered the fire alarm in the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association building.

(Updated at 11:40 p.m.) The Regal Ballston Common 12 theater was closed tonight due to flooding from ruptured water pipes.

Three pipes burst this afternoon, sending water spilling across several floors of the theater, we’re told. A clean-up is underway and the theater is hoping to reopen tomorrow (Thursday).

The water also impacted elevators in the mall building.

“Please be advised this afternoon, the sprinkler pipe broke in the Ballston Mall movie theatre and water is going into the freight elevator,” said a memo sent to workers in the offices above the mall. “As of right now, all elevators are out of service.”

Burst water pipes have plagued homes and businesses across Arlington this week, as temperatures dipped into the teens and single digits. The Trader Joe’s store in Clarendon reopened this morning after a burst water pipe last night. Also last night, the Doorways Family Home in North Arlington, which houses homeless families and victims of domestic violence, was closed when “a sprinkler head in a second floor ceiling burst due to freezing conditions” and flooded the floors down to the basement.

The women and children who were in the home were evacuated to hotels. Restoration crews worked today to make the house habitable again.

Arlington Theater Makes ‘Best of 2013’ List — The AMC Courthouse movie theater, renovated in 2012, has made the Washington Post Going Out Guide’s “Best of 2013” list for “best reason to go to the movies.” The theater’s plush recliners are said to be “more comfortable than anything in your living room.” [Washington Post]

Voting By Mail in Virginia? — Del. Rob Krupicka (D-45) has introduced legislation that would direct the Virginia State Board of Elections to study the feasibility of allowing voting by mail. Voting by mail is currently allowed in Oregon and Washington state. Such a system could help boost turnout in non-presidential year elections. [Sun Gazette]

BikeSwell posterA county-funded documentary chronicling Arlington’s transformation into a more bike-friendly community is premiering Thursday night at the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike).

The 30-minute film, titled BikeSwell, followed county staff and members of the community for more than a year while the county was adding bicycle-related amenities like Capital Bikeshare and bike lanes in streets. Gripped Films, a film company founded by Arlington resident Jason Berry, produced BikeSwell on a $30,000 county budget.

“It’s a case study on some of the things that can be done, how it’s done, and how it’s going in Arlington,” said Chris Eatough, program manager for Bike Arlington, who was part of making the film. “We asked a lot of different people from a lot of different areas of life what they think of biking. Part of it is talking to people who drive and don’t bike.”

Included in the documentary will be a discussion of staff processes for creating bike lanes, and a look at work by biking advocates in meetings and boardrooms, Eatough said.

The premiere will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Thursday night. Tickets were available to the public earlier this week but have since sold out. Following the movie, there will be a panel discussion, moderated by Eatough, featuring Berry, Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee chairman Jakob Wolf-Barnett and others.

Eatough stressed that the documentary will not simply be pro-bicycle propaganda. However, in interviewing drivers, as well as representatives from AAA, the filmmakers found very little pushback, he said.

“Interestingly enough, the opposition was hard to find, even with drivers,” Eatough said. “We thought we’d be shooting fish in a barrel asking drivers stopped at intersections. There were a lot of comments that they just need their own space, they need their own area on the roads.”

The film will be available on YouTube Friday, Eatough said, and Arlington hopes to be able to send it to communities across the country to educate them about transitioning into a more bike-friendly area.

(Updated at 4:15 p.m.) The crowd at Friday night’s outdoor showing of Grease in Rosslyn got to witness an extra bit of summer lovin’ — a choreographed, real-life marriage proposal.

Multiple attendees captured the scene on their cell phones as a group of people stood up in front of the crowd and started dancing to the musical number “You’re the One That I Want.”

At first, the stunt looked like a simple “flash mob” — a group of dancers filming a viral video. But as the song wrapped up, the movie was paused and 30-year-old Tyler Pepin, of Arlington, got down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend, Sara.

“Sara, you’re my best friend and you’re the one I want to spend the rest of my life with,” Pepin said, as Sara looked surprised. “Will you marry me?”

The crowd cheered as Sara said yes. The film resumed shortly thereafter.

“Sorry about that guys, but it was a good cause,” the projector operator said amid another round of applause for the newly-engaged couple. Grease was the final flick of the season for Rosslyn’s outdoor film fest.

Crystal City has already announced next summer’s theme, Flight.

Outdoor movie in Crystal CityThe Crystal Screen movie series, put on every summer by the Crystal City Business Improvement District, already has a theme for its 2014 season: flight.

Movies based around airplanes will start showing the first Monday of June 2014 on the plaza at 1850 S. Bell Street. These titles include movies like “Airplane,” “Snakes on a Plane” and “Top Gun.” Crystal City BID President and CEO Angela Fox said in a press release that the theme is meant to highlight Crystal City’s proximity and symbiotic relationship with Reagan National Airport.

“We don’t know of any other neighborhood in the world that has a major airport that you can actually walk to,” Fox said. “So, we are highlighting this uniquely accessible aspect of Crystal City with a summer of flight-based movies.”

This year’s theme is Blockbusters, with two more screenings left: “Inception” on Monday, Aug. 19 and “Jurassic Park” Aug. 26. Previous year’s themes have been “Rom Com,” showing romantic comedies, “By the Numbers” and “Star Trek.” Other outdoor movie events around Arlington include the Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival, which has a “Back to School” theme this year, and Penrose Square’s regular movie screenings.
