New Years resolutions can go either way — some people love them, some people hate them, some people like to call them goals and pretend that they’re not resolutions, but either way, we’ve got suggestions to help you make this year your best year yet.

Health and Fitness

There are an abundance of options to choose from in Arlington when it comes to moving your body. Sharmane is a marathon runner so she knows all the best trails: Four Mile Run, W&OD trail, Potomac Overlook trail, and Donaldson Run loop. Laura’s a former college athlete who no longer runs but enjoys group fitness.

Here’s the thing with group fitness classes: you get to know new people, or maybe just the accountability of meeting a friend there helps you get out of bed and keep the promise to yourself. Either way, you’ve got F45, Orange Theory, Boxing, Yoga, Pure Barre, Solid Core, I mean you name it, there’s probably a class for it. Try things until you find something that feels right for you!

Relationships

One thing that’s definitely been made clear over the past few years is that humans need connection. We need to put energy into our relationships, whether with a significant other, friends, family and even co-workers. Make time to get out and experience new things. Arlington has a ton of things to do.

  • If you’re focusing on your health, skip a sit down meal and meet a friend for a coffee and a walk.
  • Try a cooking class at Cookology in Ballston Quarter.
  • Get a group of friends together for some healthy competition at Punchbowl Social.
  • Throw on some ice skates and go check out Pentagon Row.

There are lots of opportunities to create new memories and new experiences if you get out of your comfort zone!

Family

As a mom of 2, I know first hand how hard it is to get out of the ordinary routine. Especially once you get to school aged kids and you throw in sports, after school activities, playdates, etc. Date nights become a distant memory.

But they don’t have to! Explore new playgrounds together. My nephews loved the climbing structure at Rocky Run Park while my kids kicked a soccer ball on the field. The playgrounds in Arlington are way cooler than they used to be when we were kids, so lots of new things to check out. Explore Muse Paintbar, watch the Capitals practices, go mini golfing at Upton Hill, check out brunch at Ruthie’s All Day (which just won best in state!) or enjoy dinner at Lyon Hall.

Whatever you decide to do with your year, we wish you a healthy, prosperous and joyful New Year!

On September 30th, Clarendon was turned into a bustling pedestrian zone, for the annual Clarendon Day event.

This annual event once again brought the community together for a day of revelry, showcasing the local culture, and creating cherished memories. In 2023, Clarendon Day did not disappoint, delivering a rich tapestry of activities, food, music, and much more.

Local businesses, community organizations, and non-profits came together to showcase their work. Attendees learned about community initiatives, discovered upcoming events, and supported new local businesses.

Arts and crafts enthusiasts were delighted by the festival’s offerings. The vendor stalls were a treasure trove of unique and handcrafted items, including jewelry, clothing, artwork, and home decor. Shoppers found it easy to indulge in retail therapy, whether searching for the perfect gift or a treat for themselves.

The diverse range of food vendors made it impossible to resist the culinary temptations.. Festival-goers enjoyed an array of delicious options, from gourmet dishes to street food classics. International cuisine, delectable BBQ, and mouthwatering desserts satisfied every palate.

The event also catered to families with a dedicated Kids Zone. Children were entertained with face painting, games, and interactive exhibits, allowing parents to relax and soak in the festival’s atmosphere.

Clarendon Day’s true essence lay in the sense of community that filled the air. Residents and visitors united to celebrate the unique spirit of the neighborhood, fostering a sense of togetherness that was both heartwarming and contagious. This year’s event was a resounding success, capturing the spirit of community, culture, and celebration. Whether a local resident or a visitor to the Washington D.C. area, Clarendon Day is an event not to be missed.

So many of us take for granted that we have food, shelter, and stability in our daily lives. McEnearney Cares Week took place from August 14-18 and was spearheaded by the company’s Diversity Council to encourage our agents and staff to actively support organizations that help families and individuals who are struggling with housing-related issues.

McEnearney Associates | Middleburg Real Estate | Atoka Properties is a powerhouse, local independent brokerage with 15 offices in D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. Realtors and staff from the Arlington office and across our other locations came out to help.

In our professional careers, we spend many hours as Realtors preparing homes for the market. We see what a positive, emotional experience it is for people to walk into a beautiful, clean home that they can envision calling their own. We help make that transformation happen every day. So having the opportunity to help families and individuals who might not have had that experience is something we can whole-heartedly support. Rolling up our sleeves and getting a house ready, or guiding families through a transitional time is something we are good at and love to do.

Here are some of the organizations we worked with during the week.

We started the week in Northwest D.C. at Community of Hope homeless shelter where we brought a surprise Chipotle lunch and ate with the residents. Community of Hope has 9 locations in D.C. providing healthcare resources and housing.

Our next stop was Community Lodgings in Alexandria. We had a blast painting a learning center a happy shade of blue for their youth education programs. Community Lodgings helps transition families from homelessness to independence through affordable housing and transitional housing.

On Wednesday, we did some yard work and organization for a home in Arlington through New Hope Housing. Walking up to a well-manicured home gives anyone a sense of pride. Had you driven by, you could have caught our managing broker, Glenn Lewis mowing the lawn (in his suit!) and many of our Associates inside cleaning and tidying up. New Hope Housing has resources for housing programs and shelters.

We were back in D.C. on Thursday at N Street Village, which provides support for women experiencing homelessness. Being part of a community that respects all aspects of you and how you experience your day, is exemplified in the care they wanted us to take in their huge garden. McEnearney was there cleaning up the garden so that the women have something peaceful and beautiful to see when they arrive.

Helping food pantries and clothing donation sites needs to happen all year round — not just during the holidays. Bread for the City can always use volunteers. McEnearney spent the day on Thursday organizing the food pantry. Bread for the City has many other programs including healthcare, social services, and diaper programs.

We wrapped up the week in Falls Church helping Home Stretch organize and add some decorating touches for a family who was in need of a little joy. Home Stretch helps families who are in crisis get out of situations that contribute to poverty and homelessness.

All of us deserve to land in a happy, safe environment. Please support these or any other organizations that lend a hand to those who may be struggling in our area. We all need each other.

Clarendon is a vibrant neighborhood that effortlessly combines youthful energy with sophisticated charm.

The allure lies in its unique ability to cater to a diverse population. Young professionals explore lively night scenes, while established residents appreciate its refined offerings. You can enjoy a night out at a great bistro or take a leisurely stroll through its tree-lined streets, soaking in the elegance of the older buildings.

From classic colonial designs to modern condos, Clarendon’s housing stock is quite diverse! Clarendon’s historic roots and its blend of architectural aesthetics truly make it a living history book. It’s not just about houses; it’s about homes that tell stories!

Among Clarendon’s charming eateries you’ll find an intimate atmosphere at Screwtop Wine Bar, delectable delights at Bakeshop, and the inviting ambiance of Green Pig Bistro. These local gems contribute to the sense of community that Clarendon is known for. Supporting local businesses is not just a trend here; it’s a way of life!

If you are thinking of buying a home in the DMV area, Clarendon offers something really special. It’s incredibly easy to live here — a place where memories are made and lives are truly enriched.

My husband and I — along with our rescued pittie Spencer — love life in Clarendon. It’s been our home for over two decades. Walking just a few blocks to our favorite restaurants like Circa, Cava, and Screwtop Wine Bar is a dream. We both love the theater and are thrilled that the Kennedy Center and Signature Theater are so close.

Two of our favorite annual events are Clarendon Day where we can check out local artists, foods, and music — and the Armed Forces Cycling Classic Bike Race is always exciting as a spectator!

Lyon Village offers residents an exceptional living experience, seamlessly blending urban convenience within a suburban setting.

Situated just north of Wilson Boulevard, this charming neighborhood boasts proximity to the bustling shops and eateries of Clarendon while offering a tranquil retreat with beautiful homes, a two-acre park, dog park, and community house.

Established a century ago, Lyon Village has approximately 800 homes and a remarkable 37 percent of these homes were built in the 1920s. The many home styles showcase the neighborhood’s timeless beauty and architectural diversity including cape cods, tudors, colonials, craftsmans, and more. Walking around Lyon Village is a visual treat for residents and visitors alike!

Anchoring the vibrant community is the Lyon Village Citizens Association (LVCA), founded in 1926. The LVCA plays a central role in bringing neighbors together through various annual events. From the beloved Easter Egg Hunt to the spirited Fourth of July Parade and Picnic, there’s always something exciting happening. Another great event, the annual Spaghetti Dinner, is hosted by the Lyon Village Community House Association. The Lyon Village Community House, a cherished neighborhood gathering place available for rent, serves as a focal point for many meetings and events. With a monthly newsletter and an active list-serv, the LVCA ensures residents stay connected and informed.

At the heart of Lyon Village lies the delightful Lyon Village Park, a two-acre fenced oasis offering a range of recreational activities. Families and friends come together to enjoy the children’s playground area, picnic shelter, two lighted tennis courts, and a lighted basketball court. The park’s highlight, the refreshing sprayground, draws in numerous young families, operating from Memorial Day to Labor Day each year, creating fun memories for all.

When my husband and I were house hunting we zeroed in on Lyon Village for all of these reasons. Since moving here, we’ve met so many wonderful neighbors on our daily walks and have enjoyed the “walkable” lifestyle living in Lyon Village allows. You can often find us at local spots like Simona Cafe, Green Pig Bistro, Bar Ivy, and Bakeshop. With its rich history, diverse architectural styles, engaging community activities, and picturesque parks, Lyon Village is an amazing place to call home.

Memorial Day is a special time to remember and show appreciation for the courageous men and women who sacrificed their lives for our country. It’s also an opportunity to come together with loved ones and celebrate the spirit of freedom and unity.

The Arlington and Washington, D.C. areas are among the most meaningful places to honor our country’s fallen heroes. From meaningful commemorations to joyful gatherings, there’s something for everyone to observe on Memorial Day.

Inspired by the historic photo taken during the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, the US Marine Corps War Memorial is an awe-inspiring monument. This iconic memorial holds a special place in the hearts of Americans as a tribute to the valor and dedication of the Marine Corps throughout history. The memorial is open to the public, and visitors can explore the surrounding grounds, which are beautifully landscaped and provide an opportunity for reflection. Many individuals come to pay their respects, leave flowers or mementos, and honor the memory of those who have served and sacrificed.

Just before Memorial Day weekend, the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (the “Old Guard”) honors America’s fallen heroes by placing American flags at gravesites for service members buried at Arlington National Cemetery and the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery.

This tradition, known as “Flags In,” has taken place annually since the Old Guard was designated as the Army’s official ceremonial unit in 1948. Every available soldier in the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment participates, placing small American flags in front of more than 228,000 headstones and at the bottom of about 7,000 niche rows in the cemetery’s Columbarium Courts and Niche Wall. Each flag is inserted into the ground, exactly one boot length from the headstone’s base.

At the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Sentinels (who are members of the Old Guard) place flags to honor the Unknowns.

All flags are removed after Memorial Day, before the cemetery opens to the public.

Immerse yourself in the patriotic atmosphere by attending the National Memorial Day Parade which marches down Constitution Avenue. The parade honors men and women who have died while serving in the US military. Pre-parade festivities will begin at 1 p.m. and the parade starts at 2 p.m. This grand procession features marching bands, veterans’ groups, military units, and festive floats, all coming together to honor our fallen heroes. Show your support by joining the enthusiastic crowd along the parade route.

If you’re looking for a small-town experience, join the Memorial Day Parade in Falls Church. This delightful parade showcases local marching bands, veterans’ groups, scout troops, and community organizations united in honoring our fallen heroes. Enjoy the cheerful procession, wave to the participants, and feel the warmth of community spirit.

Discover the vibrant spirit of Memorial Day by attending community events such as Viva Vienna. The Rotary Club of Vienna has been running ViVa! Vienna! for over 39 years in concert with the Town of Vienna. Each year the proceeds support over 70 local organizations. Enjoy music, amusement rides, arts and crafts, and delectable food options. Join the festivities, connect with your community, and support local vendors and organizations.

For more than 30 years, the National Memorial Day Concert has featured star-studded performances honoring the military service and sacrifice of men and women in uniform, their families at home, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. While aired nationally on PBS, the public is welcome to attend this free event on the west lawn of the Capitol Building. Bring your blankets, relax under the starry sky, and enjoy an evening filled with uplifting music and heartfelt moments.

If you’re looking for something to do, but not big crowds, hosting friends and family for a delightful backyard BBQ or picnic may be the ticket. Fire up the grill, savor mouthwatering burgers, hot dogs, and all your favorite BBQ treats. Enjoy the warm weather, play lawn games, and spend quality time with loved ones, all while reflecting on the importance of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, and for many people, it’s a time eagerly anticipated for the opening of pools and the refreshing splashes of water under the warm sun. As the weather becomes warmer and more inviting, communities and recreational centers across the country make preparations to welcome swimmers of all ages to their sparkling pools.

This Memorial Day, let’s take a moment to remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. Whether you choose to visit memorials, participate in meaningful traditions, attend parades and concerts, host a backyard BBQ, or join local festivities, the key is to commemorate their sacrifices while creating cherished memories with your loved ones.

May this Memorial Day be a meaningful occasion as we express gratitude and celebrate the freedom we enjoy today.

It’s spring cleaning time!

Home ownership means keeping up with maintenance items to have our homes looking their best. Waiting to tackle repairs around your home can end up being costly when little problems grow bigger over time.

No one wants to spend tens of thousands of dollars to handle those deferred maintenance items right before listing. So put money in the budget each year for general upkeep and repairs. Spring is a great time to walk around your house to see what needs to be addressed.

So what items can you do yourself and what items do you need to hire a contractor to handle? I asked Paul Fisher, owner of DomestiCall360 to take a look at my house and give me advise. Since spring can mean rain and water intrusion and it can be one of the costliest and most damaging repair items, we focused on outside water issues.

Wood trim around the house can develop dry rot from clogged gutters and exposure to the elements. We quickly found facia boards and trim that need to be replaced. If the rot is easily accessible, like in a door frame, this can be a great DYI project. There are several places around my house I can handle but the facia boards on my 3rd story — that is definitely a contractor fix for me.

Keeping your decks stained and painted is a great spring project you can do yourself that will help prevent damage that may require costly repairs. In a “do as I say, not as I do” moment, we found a very neglected wood stair railing that now needs to be completely replaced… YIKES, that is expensive.

Even though I had painted it a few times, I waited too long before realizing I needed to start painting it every year or so to prevent dry rot. So make sure you are painting your exterior wood and staining your deck to keep water from creating a very expensive replacement.

Another easy and valuable DYI project involves gutters and downspouts. Almost every home inspection I have been on, has found issues with improperly directed water flow away from the house. Make sure your gutters are not clogged or broken and that the downspouts have extensions that direct the water away from your house.

After this eye-opening tour of my home, Paul went with me to Bill’s True Value Hardware to pick up the paint, stain and wood filler I needed. I even grabbed some caulk to prevent water issues inside my bathrooms. Keep in mind that warm weather also means cookouts and bugs. Bill’s True Value even repairs screens and sells BBQ grills!

After my spring cleaning and maintenance projects I recycled and disposed some of the hazardous materials I found rather than disposing of them in the trash. I found old paint and CFL light bulbs that needed to be disposed of properly.

If you haven’t been, please go to the Arlington County Household Hazardous Materials/Electronics Collection Recycling Center. You need to make an appointment (Monday-Thursday) but you can come anytime on Saturdays from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. They even accept electronics and batteries. Please don’t throw these items in the regular trash!

Of course spring cleaning isn’t just about DYI projects, it’s also about going through and organizing your home. My last stop was a trip to the Goodwill on S Glebe and route 50, and is a fantastic donation facility. This is a busy location for donations and purchases. Even if the wait looks long, the car line moves quickly and the people that work here are so helpful. Sometimes I don’t even need to get out of my car. Make sure to launder all clothes before donating and that whatever you donate — games, furniture — are not broken and have all their pieces.

Spring is such an exciting time, especially for those looking to buy or sell a home. As a seller, you want to ensure that your home looks its best to attract potential buyers and get the best price possible. So, it’s crucial to make sure your home is well-maintained and in excellent condition. Don’t worry, though — it’s nothing too complicated! With a little effort, you can make your home shine and appeal to buyers looking for their dream home.

First up on the list is For Five Coffee Roasters in Clarendon!

Although Jillian is a Virginian through and through, New York City holds a special place in her heart as one of her favorite destinations. For Five Coffee Roasters, which first opened in Queens in 2010, brings that unique Big Apple vibe right to our neighborhood, which Jillian just loves!

The shop provides a hip, urban atmosphere while also providing a space for opening your laptop and getting to work. Oh, and did we mention their stuffed cookies? No big deal, only the most delicious thing in the world.

Next, Jillian leads us to Bayou Bakery, a spot where she enjoys taking her clients for meetings. Jillian loves the New Orleans cuisine and Southern comfort this cafe provides, all courtesy of head chef David, a Louisiana native.

After moving from Richmond, Virginia to Courthouse, Bayou Bakery quickly became a staple in Jillian’s new routine in a new city. Even to this day, she pops in for a coffee or a meeting.

New local hotspot Tatte Bakery and Cafe is next up on the list; a swanky, light filled cafe with walls lined with classic white subway tile. We love all the city vibes! But what makes Tatte even more unique is that it’s a woman-owned business, started by a self-taught baker who began selling pastries out of her home kitchen in Boston.

These humble beginnings hit a special note with Jillian. Being a female entrepreneur herself, Jillian feels empowered walking into Tatte knowing that she is supporting a local business and uplifting her fellow “boss babe”.

Last on our list, but certainly not least, is the Arlington staple Northside Social. As Jillian says, the name speaks for itself: there is not one person in North Arlington who hasn’t been to this local spot.

It’s a town favorite and for a couple of good reasons: the cafe moonlights as a chic wine bar on the upper level, they have an array of fresh baked, daily made pastries and sandwiches, and potentially the most important, it has a parking lot! Available parking? In Arlington? Almost sounds too good to be true.. almost. But Northside Social has it, and so much more!

As much as Jillian loves these spots, there are other places that she loves to frequent around the North Arlington area.
