Neighborhood Spotlight: Let’s talk about Super Bowl viewing spots

Where are you going to watch the Eagles vs the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57?

Arlington has a ton of options from small venues to large sports bars. We took a tour of 4 places around the city. 

If you haven’t already booked your reservation for the Super Bowl Party at Crystal City Sports Pub –– you are too late for the double buffet party on the third floor — you can still join the fun on the first floor where they are accepting people on a first come, first serve basis. So come early! This 3-level venue is a staple of local sports fans. 

Want a more neighborhood bar feel? Head to Quinn’s on the Corner in Courthouse. This friendly bar atmosphere is a great choice for Chiefs and Eagles fans alike. Prizes will be given away each quarter so come and enjoy the fun! 

Don’t want to hear cheers from fans on the opposing team? Okay Eagles fans, we found a bar just for you! The Renegade in Clarendon is a bi-level venue known for its live music events. They are ALL Eagles though so be prepared. They serve Yuengling Traditional Lager –– a Philly staple, and are known for the owners famous fried chicken. If you want a table, be prepared to come really early. Sorry Chiefs fans. We tried to find a fan bar just for you but given that we are closer to Philadelphia than Kansas City, the odds weren’t good.

Last was a stop at Ballston neighborhood sports bar, First Down Sports Bar & Grill. This is a local favorite. Come watch on one of the multiple TVs around the bar while feasting on wings dipped in one of their many sauce choices. Plan on watching in your own home or hosting a house party? Order First Down wings to go! Be warned, wing orders stop the day before the game.

Want an alternate option for a big venue? The Clarendon Ballroom is hosting a Super Bowl Watch Party with games, a $25 Bottomless Buffet, a 20 foot TV video wall and a 50 foot projector wall. There are even private “tail gate sections” available. 

Inca Social is hosting a watch party in Courthouse with beer buckets, food and tequila specials starting at 6:30 p.m.  Reservations are a must – go to Event Bright to reserve.

Don’t forget about Lyon Hall, Nighthawk, Texas Jacks Barbeque, Wilson Hardware, Thirsty Bernies, O’Sullivans, the Cowboy Cafe and Courthaus Social — just to name a few.

No matter where you plan on watching the Super Bowl, the important thing to remember is to GET THERE EARLY. If you want to order food and stay home — ORDER EARLY!

W&OD Trail — The W&OD Trail is such a great resource for anyone in Arlington. It starts in Shirlington and runs about 45 miles up to Purcellville, Virginia. You can walk, run, ride your bike, or you even have the option to ride your horse on the horse trail that runs parallel to part of the W&OD. Some of my other favorite trails in Arlington are Donaldson Run, and Lubber Run. We have plenty of great outdoor spaces here in Arlington so you have no excuse to not take advantage of them.

Bash Boxing — If you’re looking for accountability and a great way to step up your fitness goals in 2023 Bash Boxing is in your corner! They do full body workouts mixing boxing with high intensity interval training, so you can learn to box as you get a workout in. Here in Ballston you also have some other great gym options like Vida Fitness which I’m currently a member at or, you also have some group training classes like F45 Training and Orange Theory which I would definitely recommend if you want that team atmosphere.

CorePower Yoga — Just as important as working out your body is working out your mind and a yoga studio is a great place to do that. CorePower Yoga is a great option and it’s located right in the heart of Ballston. Another few other great options in North Arlington are Sun & Moon Yoga Studio and Mind The Mat Pilates & Yoga, but you can find yoga studios all throughout Arlington. If you’re looking for a fantastic place for pilates then I have to tell you about Picot Pilates which is owned by my good friend and colleague Sarah Picot.

Consisting of a web of hundreds of meters of illuminated rope, Rhizome symbolizes the many ways in which human exchanges occur both on and offline. This cocoon of light exchanges is reflective of our current society.

Christmas Tree at Ballston — In the heart of the Ballston neighborhood, the Ballston Quarter shopping and entertainment district is all decked out for the holidays. While you’re there to admire the tree, stop in for some Christmas shopping or hot cocoa. Brighten your day by stopping at any of their exciting and festive holiday events.

There is a variety of restaurants and shops on the ground level as well.

Life in Crystal City-National Landing isn’t strictly commercial. Crystal City residents live in close proximity to the 18.6-mile Mt. Vernon Trail, which is ideal for those looking to get closer to the Potomac. Crystal City is a very active community to say the least, and there is something to do for everyone. From farmers markets to weekly 5Ks, Crystal City is a convivial community of good spirits and pleasant diversions.

Rt. 1 and the G.W. Parkway are easily accessible but having a car isn’t necessary in Crystal City. Crystal City itself is situated around the Crystal City Metro Station, which is also connected with the VRE. No need to take a cab to the airport here: Reagan Airport is less than two miles away. Crystal City is a commuter’s paradise.

Neighborhood Spotlight: The Berkshire Oakwood neighborhood

Conveniently located minutes from D.C., Arlington provides the best of both worlds — an urban feel in some areas closer to the metro; and quiet neighborhoods with parks and amazing schools. Being so close to D.C. and still feeling close to nature is a part of what makes Arlington unique.

Berkshire Oakwood is a well-established community of single-family homes that sits less than 9 miles from Washington, D.C. and is within walking distance of the East Falls Metro Station, along with shops and restaurants. This quiet neighborhood features a unique mixture of architecture, ranging from vintage Tudor and Cape Cod to Colonial and Modern.

Berkshire Oakwood began its modern day residential development in the early 1930s, not long before East Falls Church broke away from Falls Church to become part of Arlington County. Many of the homes in the community were built in the 1930s and 1940s, with construction resuming again after the end of World War II when building materials again became plentiful. While some of the older homes have retained most of their original charm, others have been extensively remodeled from top to bottom. Regardless of when the homes were built, they all feature detailed craftsmanship. 

The East Falls Church Metro is right at the western edge, and the transit-oriented nature of the area has contributed to a continuing evolution. A number of streets are being improved to provide better walkability, with the goal of continued increase in restaurants, retail and a “boulevard” type of experience.

Lee Harrison Shopping Center is close by, allowing for easy access to Harris Teeter, hair and nail salons, Perfect Pointe, and Jhoon Rhee Martial Arts. Don’t want to cook dinner? Stop by the family-owned pie-tanza, where Italian food and gourmet wood-fired pizza are always available in a family friendly environment, or Sushi-Zen, also family-owned and voted Best Sushi Restaurant in Arlington. Looking for dessert? La Moo Creamery and Duck Donuts offer a sweet treat for everyone.

Lee Community Center is also within walking distance and families with younger kids can participate in the Cooperative Playgroup, while everyone is invited to Lee’s Arts Center. Outside of the community center you’ll find a lighted basketball court, children’s playground, baseball field, and butterfly garden.

Berkshire Oakwood provides easy access to multiple trails that run along the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail, which is perfect for residents who like to jog, walk or bike.

Feeling eerie-sistable and want to join in on the skele-ton of fun? Then add Cherrydale’s First Annual Halloween Swing Dance to your agenda! Located on the second floor of the Cherrydale Volunteer Fire Department, come dressed in your best (or worst) costume and dance the night away on Saturday, October 22. Beginner swing lessons start at 8 p.m., and from 9-11:45 p.m. swing your mummied bodies to the lindy tunes and Halloween-themed music.

Did somebody say treat? Don’t forget that your furry four-legged companions want to pawty too! Check out Dogma Bakery’s Doggie Trick-or-Treating event on Saturday, October 29 from 2-4 p.m. Registration is required in advance, and all proceeds go towards Lucky Dog Animal Rescue! Take a stroll through Shirlington Village, collect treats, and be sure to enter the costume contest. No tricks, just treats here!

Think you’re the ghostest with the mostest? Then stop on by Macy’s in Ballston for their Halloween Celebration! Happening on Sunday, October 30 from 1-5 p.m., this free event will have costume contests for all ages, snacks and drinks, red carpet photo opportunities, costume fashion show, prizes, and a chance to trick or treat! 

If you’re looking for something to really lift your spirits, then visit Whino on Wilson Boulevard for their Silent Headphone Costume Party on Sunday, October 30 from 5-11 .pm. Three of the Top DJs in the DMV will be playing for your attention. Wear your best costume for your chance to win $1000!

Finally, if you think you have the best Halloween display at your Del Ray home, it’s worth submitting a nomination for the Best Decorated House Contest. As part of the 26th annual Del Ray Halloween Parade, residents can submit their home or a neighbor’s home for the contest with the address, photo and contact information. Hurry, as nominations are due by 12 p.m. on Sunday, October 23. Make sure you check out the Del Ray Halloween Parade on Sunday, October 30 as crowds and floats march down Mount Vernon Ave from E. Bellefonte Ave to the Mount Vernon Rec Center Field.

Neighborhood Spotlight: Let’s talk about Westover Village

Westover Village is the commercial center for several neighborhoods we will tour today. Located along Washington Boulevard, between Patrick Henry Dr. and McKinley Street, the residential part of Westover is a pleasant combination of homes. 

Many of the original 1940s two  bedroom colonials have been expanded and renovated while a few have been replaced with new homes. Duplexes are located near Swanson Middle School, and garden apartments are sprinkled throughout the area. Some are market rate and some are used for APAH, Fisher House, Erdo and VHDA affordable housing. 

In the last few years, some of the buildings have been replaced with townhouses. Among the neighborhood amenities are Arlington County Library, W&OD biking and walking trail, and Westover Park and Playground. 

Just East of Westover lies Lacey Forest, bordered by the large Lacey Woods Park with acres of trees and the W&OD trail. The neighborhood originally had many summer cottages Washintonians used to escape the heat and enjoy the nearby Luna Park amusement venue. 

A number of those cottages were razed for new houses, and they join the many Colonial, Cape Cods, ramblers, and split levels that were built between the 1940s and 1960s. The first FHA insured house was located in Lacey Forest, and Eleanor Roosevelt personally visited the new homeowners. 

Moving north from Washington Boulevard are Wynnewood, Larchmont, and Tara. These areas were developed between the 1930s and 1960s, and many of the homes were custom built. They lend themselves to the expansions and renovations found throughout the area. Known for the tree canopy and rolling hills, the shady streets are ideal for walking and biking. Big Walnut park is at the northern edge of Tara and provides the best sledding hill in the area.

Years ago, a very wise woman persevered in the face of strong opposition to have medians built to slow traffic along Patrick Henry Drive. Today those medians are filled with tall trees, mature shrubbery and form a leafy entry to the Leeway Heights neighborhood. 

Many of the homes are “Broyhill” colonials, and the original tracks houses have been transformed with creative additions and renovations. Newer splits and bi-levels were built in the 1960s and several streets of summer cottages remain, although often expanded. The tucked away Parkhurst Park is nearby as is Cardinal Elementary School and the Sunday Farmer’s Market.

A desirable mix of housing, amenities, schools, and parks make Westover Village and its surrounding neighborhoods a very popular part of Arlington’s 22205 zip code.

Perched high along Wilson Boulevard all the way down to Rte 66 and Westover is the charming neighborhood of Dominion Hills.

Located about five miles from Washington, D.C. and close to Interstate 66 and Routes 50 and 7, Dominion Hills is a great location for commuters no matter which direction you are headed. Want to leave the car at home? Dominion Hills is within a few miles of both the East Falls Church and Ballston metros.

Pop over to the Dominion Hills Center for food and shopping. The newest restaurant is the Meridian Pint where neighbors can meet in their outdoor patio for beer, burgers and game nights.

The Civic Association sponsors several family-oriented social activities, most of them held in Dominion Hills Park.

Powhatan Springs Skate Park: The beautifully renovated 17,000 square foot award-winning skate park is one of the most popular features of Powhatan Springs Park. It has a combination of old-school and street elements including two bowls, a snake zone and a street area.

Upton Hill Regional Park: Upton Hill Regional Park offers visitors a wooded oasis in the heart of the most densely populated area of Northern Virginia. A large outdoor waterpark complex is a sparkling attraction in this wooded, urban park.

Bon Air Park Rose Garden: Bon Air Park features a beautiful memorial rose garden that features more than 120 different varieties of roses and is often a chosen location for weddings. The Arlington Rose Foundation serves as partner to advise and to help promote planting. Enjoy the azalea, shade, sun and ornamental tree gardens. Master Gardeners of Arlington maintain sun and shade gardens to use as teaching tools for local gardeners. This expansive 24-acre park also includes playgrounds, picnic areas with charcoal grills and a path.

Neighborhood Spotlight: Let’s talk about top dog spots

The hottest weeks of the year are often referred to as the “dog days” of summer — a time when it’s even too hot for dogs to be running around.

We know that’s not really the origin of the term, but we decided it was a great time to celebrate our devoted furry friends! A couple dates to note on your calendar are: DOGust on August 1st (the universal birthday for shelter dogs), and National Dog Day on August 26th. Of course you don’t really need a reason to give your pup extra attention or play time. In that spirit, we’ve put together a list of our favorite dog friendly places in Arlington. 

District Dogs — District Dogs began as a dog walking business in 2014. Growing with each new client, within two years they gained a reputation as the go-to pet care company for warm, thoughtful and outstanding service. District Dog offers a wide array of services including daycare, overnight boarding, grooming, training classes and a curated retail selection for dogs and dog-lovers alike.

James Hunter Dog Park — James Hunter Park has a plaza terrace, open lawn, demonstration gardens, water feature and adjacent dog park that is open until 9 p.m.

Shirlington Dog Park — Shirlington Dog Park was one of the first officially recognized off-leash dog exercise areas in the region. Being almost two acres in size, its narrow, quarter-mile length with an accessible trail, runs along an urban stream on the one side and warehouse building on the other. There is also a separate adjoining area for small dogs.

Four Mile Run Park — Take your pup for a stroll along this path surrounded by two acres of greenery that runs parallel to Four Mile Run stream. Four Mile Run Park received the Best New Environmental Sustainability Award from the Virginia Recreation and Park Society in 2018, the Virginia Governor’s Environmental excellence Award in 2018 and the Dave Pearson Watershed Excellence Award from the Virginia Lakes and Watershed Association in 2018.

Towers Dog Park — With a large fenced in area that is a great size for bigger dogs to get some exercise and a separate small dog area this park offers something for everyone. Sit next to a large grassy field, the picnic area, or by the big tress that provide good shade during the summer month.   

Loyal Companion Pet Store — There’s a lot of higher quality food options, supplies, toys and gear for your four-legged canine friends here. Offering a boutique feel with staff who remember you and your pooch, it’s the go-to spot for many dog lovers. And, the dogs love it, too, since they can come in, walk around and get a treat!  

Dogma Bakery and Boutique — Opening for business in 2000, Dogma has been committed to providing only healthy foods and treats for your pups. Dogma’s treats are baked in store, using only human-grade ingredients, with no added salt, sugar or preservatives. Almost every day their oven is on and their bakers are baking to give you fun new treats for every season. Dogma supports many local rescues and their local shelters by holding animal adoptions and fundraisers on a regular basis.

Northside Social — You deserve a night out every once in a while, but who’s to say your pup doesn’t too? You and your best friend are more than welcome to enjoy a meal at Northside Social. Whether you’re stopping by this comfortable restaurant for a latte or dinner outside, feel free to bring your pet along!

Sweet Science Coffee — Enjoy a delicious drip coffee or espresso drink, and a freshly made baked good on the patio with your pup at this craft coffee shop.
