Just over the key bridge from Georgetown, Rosslyn is an urban environment with a mix of fortune 500 companies (such as Nestle, Deloitte and Rosetta Stone), great chef-driven restaurants and food halls, events and festivals and a summer/fall farmer’s market.

Formerly known as Ross Lynn, named after a local farm owned by William and Carolyn Ross during Virginia’s colonial period, Rosslyn went through a development boom in the 1960s which revitalized Rosslyn with several high-rise office buildings and hotels.

Although Rosslyn is known for its marquee high-rise buildings, it is home to the Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima) which is visited by over 1 million annually and the Netherlands Carillon — a set of 50 bells in a 12-story tower gifted by the Netherlands to the US during World War II. Visit the memorial in the spring and you’ll be delighted by thousands of tulips, a must-see!

Many live and work in Rosslyn for its wonderful convenience to Washington and public transportation-friendly access, including 14 Metrobus lines, a D.C. circulator that connects Rosslyn with Georgetown and Dupont Circle, and access to the metro’s blue, orange and silver lines at the Rosslyn Metro station. A little local secret, Rosslyn is also home to a daily bus service to Penn Station/Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Rosslyn is also known for its amazing cycling and pedestrian trails connecting Northern Virginia to Washington, D.C. The famous Custis Trail travels along Interstate 66 through Rosslyn and can take you all the way through the Mount Vernon Trail to Alexandria and Mount Vernon, and the Potomac Heritage Trail. One of the most beautiful trails in the Washington, D.C. region.

The Custis Trail can also take you across the Francis Scott Key Bridge to the C&O Canal Towpath or the Capital Crescent Trail. It is very common to see the trails bustling before and after work with commuters. No wonder Arlington was named the “Fittest City in America” by American College of Sports Medicine (2021).

Okay, we can’t finish this article without talking about the fabulous restaurants in Rosslyn!

Let’s start with Fabio Trabocchi’s new Sfoglina in Rosslyn, a menu deeply rooted in tradition. The Assembly located in the newly revitalized Rosslyn City Center is an incredible 29,000-square-foot food hall with multiple private dining rooms, an outdoor terrace and two full-service bars. There is much more with Continental Beer Garden, Compass Coffee, Inca Social, Salt and &pizza.

Fairlington has so much to offer and is one of Arlington’s best-kept secrets.

With immediate access to I-395 (and located adjacent to Shirlington), residents can easily get to downtown Washington, D.C. in minutes and many other key destinations throughout Northern Virginia and beyond.

The neighborhood dates back to the 1700s when it was owned by John Carlyle and even George Washington. In the 1930s, FDR enacted a decree to have the land developed for defense workers and their families. What you see as Fairlington today (primarily townhouse-type condominium apartments) was built in the 1940s as the largest housing project financed during World War II. Fairlington is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and on the Virginia Landmarks Register.

A big draw to Fairlington is the access to many amazing neighborhood amenities, such as the Fairlington Community Centerwhich hosts a seasonal farmers market, and Fairlington Park featuring basketball courts, a fitness area and a playground. Fairlington is also a wonderful place for pets with a dedicated park (Utah Dog Park) and easy access to numerous trails including the famous Four-Mile Run Trail and the Washington and Old Dominion (W&OD) Trail

Fairlington borders Alexandria and residents have easy access to the Bradlee Shopping Center which is anchored by a Fresh Market and it is just down the road from the Green Street Gardens of Virginia. Also, minutes away is Shirlington, a vibrant, welcoming, and diverse community that has everything you need whether craving food or entertainment. Check out my video and article on Shirlington here.

Fireworks displays are returning in full after two years of scaled-back celebrations.

Watching the fireworks is one of the highlights of D.C.’s Fourth of July celebrations, and there are plenty of sites to view them from. You’ll find exceptional vantage points from rooftop bars, National Mall locations, Arlington and many other places throughout the District. Here are some of our favorites!

The National Mall

Grab your picnic blanket and settle down on any patch of grass on the National Mall and you’ll have front row seats to the show! The Mall is the most popular place to watch the fireworks display with visitors staking out spots near the Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial and many other locales across D.C.’s most scenic space. The display gets underway just after 9 p.m. and will be launched from both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. You will want to give yourself plenty of time to find a spot and familiarize yourself with access entry points, road closures and prohibited items. You can find helpful tips and more information from the National Park Service.

US Marine Corps War Memorial

Located on Arlington Ridge along the axis of the National Mall, the US Marine Corps War Memorial offers a panorama of the Lincoln memorial, Washington Monument, and Capitol Building. If you want to avoid the crowds on the mall and avoid downtown this is a great location!

Gravelly Point Park

Located on the west bank of the Potomac in Arlington, Gravelly Point is just to the north of Reagan National Airport on the George Washington Parkway. Famous for watching airplanes take off and land, this national parkland is also a prime viewing spot for the capital fireworks. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis so make sure you get there early.

Thompson Boat Center

Looking for a view from the water? Head over to Thompson Boat center and rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (advance reservations are required). You can paddle over to a designated viewing spot and enjoy the fireworks as they light up the sky over D.C.’s most iconic monuments and reflect off the Potomac River.

Key Bridge

Connecting Rosslyn and Georgetown, the Francis Scott Key Bridge offers spectacular views of the Potomac River and the District. Although you won’t find seating on the bridge, you can stroll over from the Rosslyn Metro station and enjoy a standing-room-only view of the fireworks.

There are a whole host of Independence Day celebrations throughout D.C., Northern Virginia, and Maryland for you to enjoy this Fourth of July!

Bordered to the north by The Pentagon, the west by the Army Navy Country Club, and to the south is the City of Alexandria, Arlington Ridge is a long-established community with hilly, winding streets and large canopy trees.

A quiet community located in South Arlington, this community offers a distinctive residential character with architecturally diverse, single-family homes.

Also known simply as “The Ridge”, this community is home to two historical points of interest: the Hume School (National Register of Historic Places), currently the site of the Arlington Country Historical Society and Museum, and Fort Scott (Historic District), currently the site of Fort Scott Park.

Arlington Ridge is an exceptionally attractive and convenient neighborhood in which to live.  Many, if not most residents were originally drawn to the area because in all of northern Virginia, it is the closest residential neighborhood to downtown Washington, D.C.– an oasis near a big city.

For decades, Arlington Ridge has been known as a commuter neighborhood for its proximity to Washington, D.C., The Pentagon, and Reagan National Airport and its easy public transportation access with Metro and frequent bus lines, but with new developments and amenities it’s increasingly becoming more of a destination for tourists and regional residents.

Pentagon City alone has become a true live, work, play neighborhood with an estimated 8,200 residents, one of the world’s largest office buildings, more than 150 shops and restaurants, and Pentagon Row, which has 300,000 square feet of retail space and 502 residential units.

And we can’t write an article about Arlington Ridge without talking about National Landing! With the arrival of our newest resident, Amazon, we will be seeing a lot of change and development as a result of $8 Billion in private investment in the pipeline to transform and grow National Landing.

According to NationalLanding.org (National Landing BID), there is expected to be more than 25,000 new jobs from Amazon alone by 2030, 7,800 new residential units, and an expansion of 400% in dining, shopping, and entertainment options. In addition to pedestrian and road improvements and more than 300 planned community outreach events.

Located in the northernmost part of Arlington, Dover Crystal is home to approximately 147 homes and a population of about 500 people.

Known for its unique curb appeal and wide array of home styles, this small tight-knit community offers a combination of affluence and mid-century design influences. You will find large traditional Colonials and an array of contemporary, modern houses and large multi-story treehouses.

Located close to the Potomac River, Dover Crystal offers plenty of parks and greenspace and miles of hiking and biking trails; including the Blue Jay Way, White Oak Way and the Potomac Heritage and Overlooks trails. Some of these trails even connect within Potomac Overlook Regional Park, which is just at the northern tip of the neighborhood.

One of the most unique characteristics Dover Crystal offers is the elevation changes within the neighborhood, with hilly and wooded terrain, lots of mature trees, very walkable streets and plenty of wildlife.

While Dover Crystal does not have its own Metro Station, the Ballston Metro on the Orange and Silver Lines are close by, and D.C. is just one stoplight away!

What makes Waycroft-Woodlawn special?

Established in the 1930’s, Waycroft-Woodlawn is a beautiful neighborhood located in Arlington, just north of the Ballston-Rosslyn Corridor and anchored by Virginia hospital to the west. Known for its quiet streets, access to D.C., and rolling hills and gardens, this neighborhood is home to 530 homes.

The tree-lined streets and community spirit are protected and upheld by the Waycroft-Woodlawn Civic Association, which is composed of community members dedicated to keeping residents safe and happy. This tight-knit community comes together often to host community parties and events — like the annual July 4th children’s bike parade and barbeque.

Waycroft Woodlawn is the best of both worlds; minutes from D.C., the hustle and bustle of Ballston, but in between a tranquil neighborhood with beautiful tree-lined streets and natural landscapes. Its location allows for easy travel throughout the region, whether it’s via public transit, car, or bike. The neighborhood sits just north of the Orange and Silver Metro lines with the Ballston-MU metro station just a few blocks away.

If traveling by car is for you, Waycroft-Woodlawn is convenient to a few of the main thoroughfares in the region, with I-66 bordering on the southern edge, and Glebe Road marking the eastern border. The neighborhood is also notable for having great access for cyclists, and most commutes and daily errands can be accomplished via bike along the Custis Trail, which is great news for anyone looking to avoid D.C. traffic.

What makes Aurora Highlands special?

Just southwest adjacent to Washington, D.C., Aurora Highlands encompasses Pentagon City and the surrounding subdivisions of Addison Heights, Aurora Hills and Virginia Highlands.

Much of the area was developed between 1896 and 1930, and is now recognized as the Aurora Highlands Historic District. The Pentagon City part of Aurora Highlands is mainly known for its high-rise condominiums, commuter hotels, and shopping districts (Pentagon City Mall and Pentagon Row), and most recently the newly named National Landing with the arrival of Amazon’s HQ2. Aurora Highlands is also a beautiful residential neighborhood with mature trees, many recreational amenities, and local restaurants and shops.

For decades, Aurora Highlands was known as a commuter neighborhood for its proximity to Washington, D.C., The Pentagon, and Reagan National Airport and its easy public transportation access with Metro and frequent bus lines, but with new developments and amenities it’s increasingly becoming more of a destination for tourists and regional residents. Pentagon City alone has become a true live, work, play neighborhood with an estimated 8,200 residents, one of the world’s largest office buildings, more than 150 shops and restaurants, and Pentagon Row, which has 300,000 square feet of retail space and 502 residential units.

Aurora Highlands offers a vast range of housing types from apartments and condominiums to townhouses and single family homes. The commonality amongst them is the amazing walkability to restaurants, parks, shops and so much more.

The historic district of Aurora Highlands is worth taking a stroll through on a warm afternoon, maybe after brunch at Bob and Edith’s Diner. It has three historic churches, a rectory, two schools, and recreation. “Sunnydale Farm” is known as one of the oldest dwellings in the neighborhood and is a Greek-revival style building circa 1870. There are a number of wonderful parks including the expansive 20-acre Virginia Highlands Park offering diamond fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, volleyball court, spray park, an urban garden and more.

What makes Langston Boulevard Special?

Langston Boulevard, recently renamed after John M. Langston, is one of Arlington’s prominent ‘main streets’ and features a wide array of shops, restaurants and amenities.

“The name Langston has had an incredible impact on the lives of so many African American children who grew up along [and nearby] the Lee Highway corridor” said Working Group Member Saundra Green.

Langston Boulevard stretches from Rosslyn 5.2 miles west to East Falls Church and was formerly the major thoroughfare connecting Virginia to Washington, D.C., before Route 66 was built in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Along the corridor, there are many wonderful and diverse places to live, shop, dine and play.

Some local favorites that have been around for years include the Overlee Community Association (Swim Club), Metro 29 Diner (featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives), Cowboy Cafe, Livin’ The Pie Life, Arrowine & Cheese, Heidelberg Bakery, Lemoncello, Lebanese Taverna Market, Cherrydale Hardware, Caribbean Grill, The Italian Store, Pastries by Randolph and so much more.

Lee Heights Shops and Lee Harrison Shopping Center are two of the many major destinations along the Boulevard which are bustling with nearby residents and commuters throughout the week. Lee Harrison Shopping Center is anchored by a Harris Teeter grocery store and has many shops and restaurants including Peter Chang (recently nominated for a James Beard Award), Duck Donuts, Jhoon Rhee Martial Arts, Pie Tanza and more. Lee Heights Shops is the perfect stop for lunch at French Bistro, Cafe Colline, and a quick stop to pick up a gift at Lemoncello.

Along Langston Boulevard there are a wide variety of home styles including condominiums, townhouses and single family homes. The corridor is hugged by many beautiful neighborhoods (e.g. Donaldson Run, Cherrydale, Yorktown, Williamsburg) with tree-lined streets. Parks and recreational amenities are easily accessible including Gateway Park with its amphitheater, the Custis Trail, Stratford Park’s popular basketball courts, and 12-acre Tuckahoe Park with sports fields, tennis courts, and a great playground.

What makes Falls Church a Special Neighborhood in Northern Virginia?

Falls Church, called The Little City, a tight knit city with both urban and suburban appeal, was originally a Native and colonist community prior to the founding of the Falls Church in 1734.

Over time, it evolved to a township and eventually, an independent municipality in 1948. Close to D.C. and serviced by two Metro stations, multiple bus lines and close to 495 and 66, Falls Church has everything to offer for the young professional, growing family, or downsizing empty-nesters. Come take a look with me at all the great businesses you can walk to within Falls Church.

Broad Street (or Route 7) is the central backbone of Falls Church, and there are so many places to stop during the day. You can start off here, at Northside Social Falls Church, for a coffee and pastry before heading to shopping, activities and more. (Even better, you can wrap your day here too with a glass of wine!)

If it’s Saturday, then in the morning you *must* go to the Government Center, where the Farmer’s Market is situated from April to December. You can get fruits, vegetables, flowers, local honey and meat, baked goods, dairy products, and my kids’ favorite, crepes to order. When your kids need to run off some of that Saturday morning energy, walk across the Government Center grounds to the Cherry Hill Park, with playground equipment, a barn and loads of green space

If you are looking for entertainment, you can get tickets to a show at the State Theater where there’s a diverse bill of local and national acts performing most nights of the year, or head over to Creative Cauldron, where community theater and creativity come alive! If activity is more your style, one of the best things about Falls Church is the accessibility to the WO&D Trail, with major accesses on the western and eastern ends of the city. If your bike needs a tune-up, you can stop in at Bikenetic for all your cycling maintenance and purchase needs! They also host bike rides for all levels in the warmer months.

If the weather isn’t good for an outside event, you can try Bowl America or the new Scramble Indoor Play space over on East Fairfax Street. If creativity is your thing, you could hit the Clay Cafe on North Maple Street, just around the corner from Rare Bird Coffee Roasters. Create fun ceramics and memories in an afternoon there! If your kids are looking for something new to play with, you can hit Doodlehopper 4 Kids on Broad Street, or run around the corner on Washington Street to the Toy Nest, a toy library where you can play with toys not at home, having fun with your kids without distraction!

When it’s time to wind down, there are so many options! You could stop by Penzeys for some spices to make your home-cooking sing, or you can just decide to eat out at one of the city’s great restaurants, like Dogwood Tavern, Clare & Don’s Beach Shack, Thompson Italian, Solace Outpost, and more. All have delicious offerings, outdoor and indoor seating, and friendly service!

What makes North Ballston a Special Neighborhood in Arlington?

A major crossroads since 1740, Ballston is home to more than 14,000 people today.

Named after the Ball family and Ball’s Tavern, which was located at the intersection of N. Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard in the early 1800s, Ballston has been an important crossroads and transportation hub for centuries. In 1896, an electric trolley began operating along Fairfax Drive to eventually serve Fairfax City, Falls Church and Clarendon where it branched off to Rosslyn and downtown D.C. Then in 1979, the Ballston Metrorail Station opened and ushered in new development.

Home to more than 14,000 people, Ballston offers an urban lifestyle with many high-rise condominiums at the core, then townhomes and single-family homes as you travel further north. The convenience of shopping, dining, entertainment and transportation south of Fairfax Drive is matched by access to athletic facilities at Quincy Park and Washington-Liberty Aquatics Center, and the Arlington Central Library to the north.

All these lifestyle amenities have made North Ballston a great place to live and play, which has also attracted some top corporations and universities including the Office of Naval Research, the Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research… just to name a few. Some of the most exciting recent additions to the neighborhood include the renovated and expanded Ballston Quarter — featured in our January 15 Neighborhood Spotlight.

What makes Maywood a Special Neighborhood in Arlington?

Established in 1909 as one of the oldest residential districts in Arlington, Maywood is a step back in time with beautiful tree-lined streets hugged by homes showcasing a variety of architectural styles, gabled roofs, front porches and mature landscaping.

Located minutes from Washington, D.C., Maywood is 46 acres with a population of about 1,400 and is known as one of the best places to live in Virginia.

Maywood is within walking distance to numerous amenities including the Custis Trail which is a 5.12-mile path that starts in Rosslyn at the Mount Vernon Trail near Key Bridge — where you can connect to the Capital Crescent Trail and the C&O Canal Towpath to head into D.C. and Maryland. Or travel along I-66 through Arlington County until reaching the trail’s junction with the W&OD Trail.

Many Maywood residents walk, run, bike, and even commute using this bustling trail — one of the many perks of living in the neighborhood. In addition to the Custis Trail, Maywood is home to Thrifton Hill Park and also within walking distance to the Hendry House, a popular special events venue.

Adjacent to the southern border of Maywood is the newly renamed Langston Boulevard which is home to many restaurants, retailers, and services, including the legendary The Italian Store which has delicious subs, sandwiches, NY style pizza, and a large selection of Italian wines and goods. Other great neighborhood destinations include Tarbouch Cafe, BRG Arlington, and Big Wheel Bikes.

Maywood has nearly 300 buildings that are in the Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman and Tudor Revival styles. The neighborhood also includes buildings from every decade of the 20th and 21st centuries. The oldest buildings date to the 1900s and 1910s and are primarily Queen Anne and Colonial Revival four-squares, cottages and two-story gable-front houses. The Craftsman-style four-square and bungalow became more prominent in the late 1910s and 1920s.

During the 1930s, the infill cottage and Cape Cod housing was constructed largely of the Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival styles. Several homes have been identified as prefabricated mail-order houses from such companies as Sears, Roebuck & Company and Aladdin.

The neighborhood is a true Arlington treasure and definitely one to visit. Connect with neighborhood experts Anne Cronin and Linda Murphy to learn more about Maywood and other surrounding areas!
