Local gourmet burger franchise The Burger Joint is coming to Lyon Village. The new restaurant will occupy a storefront at 3129 Lee Highway, next to venerable Arlington institution The Italian Store.

As first reported by Shirlington Village Blogspot, the new Burger Joint should open at some point next month.

This is the company’s fourth location. Other locations include Bethesda, Dupont Circle and Old Town Alexandria.

Lyon Hall is announcing its presence to the world. The French-style brasserie, located a block from the Clarendon Metro, just erected some retro-themed outside signage. It has also launched a presence on Facebook and Twitter.

The owners, who first made their mark in Clarendon with Liberty Tavern, hope to open Lyon Hall by the end of the month. Their other Clarendon development, Northside Social, is expected to open around the same time.

Perhaps trying to distance itself from similar but pricey DC establishments like Brasserie Beck, Lyon Hall is promoting itself as a “casual and affordable” neighborhood restaurant.

Lyon Hall will feature seating for 231, including an outdoor patio and a private dining room. Food will be of the “French brasserie fare” variety, with a heavy German influence. The menu will include burgers, steaks, schnitzel, a variety of sausages and a raw bar.

The drink menu will feature 20 wines by the glass, 40 wines by the bottle, 20 beers on tap and a “wide variety” of bottled beers from France, Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic.

The restaurant is named after Frank Lyon, who developed the 1940s Streamline Moderne building in which Lyon Hall is housed.

Liberty Tavern’s owner is expanding his presence in Clarendon with two new storefronts, expected to open in a few weeks. Northside Social, a high-end coffee shop and wine bar, will be located at Wilson Blvd and Fairfax Dr, across from Silver Diner. Lyon Hall, a “European-style brasserie,” will be located at Washington Blvd and N Highland St.

Washingtonian has the details on two of Liberty’s new culinary hires, both of whom hail from well-regarded Manhattan restaurants.

We’re hearing about several new businesses that may be coming to Arlington.

  • A new sidewalk cafe is in the works for Clarendon. A company called Boxed In, LLC is petitioning the county for a special exception use permit for an outdoor cafe at 3171 Wilson Blvd, a currently vacant storefront between Eventide Restaurant and Clarendon Ballroom. The county board will consider the proposal during its meeting on March 13.
  • Clearwire Wireless Broadband is coming to Arlington and the greater Washington area. The 4G WiMAX mobile broadband service provider is requesting permission to build “telecommunication facilities,” presumably base transceiver stations, on several Arlington apartment buildings. The county board will consider use permits for facilities at the following addresses: 4241 Columbia Pike, 1200 S Arlington Ridge Rd, 333 South Glebe Rd, 5100 8th Rd S. Clearwire’s investor relations web site says the company expects to roll out service in the DC area by the end of this year.
  • Patch, the community news arm of internet giant AOL, is coming to DC. The company is currently recruiting editors for DC area sites, according to a source. No word on which local communities would get their own Patch, but Arlington, with its 210,000 residents, high per capita income and wealth of distinctive neighborhoods, seems like a ripe target. Silicon Valley Insider reported this week that AOL is planning to expand Patch from the current 30 local sites to “hundreds” of sites by the end of 2010. Some analysts say Patch’s expansion has the potential of hurting independent hyperlocal news operations (like this web site).
