New Stores Coming to Pentagon City Mall

More changes are coming to The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.

On the heels of the recent openings of a new Microsoft Store, Tumi store, Coach store, Bose store, The Limited store, and Chipotle restaurant, the mall has announced some new additions.

A Fire and Ice jewelry store is expected to open tomorrow, Sept. 1. The store specializes in “hand crafted creations, with a focus on vibrant gems and jewels that evoke the colors and textures of our planet’s rich natural history.” The 500 square foot store will be opening on the second level of the mall, next to L’Occitane.

A Kate Spade store is set to open in Pentagon City mall in “early fall,” according to a press release. Kate Spade’s diverse set of offerings include handbags, clothing, jewelry, shoes, stationery, eyewear, baby items, fragrance, tabletop goods, bedding and gifts. The 1,450 square foot storefront will be opening on the second level of the mall next to Club Monaco.

Finally, an Oakley store is also opening on the second level of the mall, according to the mall directory. While not officially announced, it appears that the Oakley store will be replacing another store that’s currently open. It’s not clear which store that may be, however. Oakley is best known for its sunglasses, but it also sells apparel, bags and footwear.

There are more than 170 stores in the Pentagon City mall, which is anchored by Nordstrom and Macy’s department stores.

Vintage Bike Store to Open in Lyon Park

A new used bike store is coming to a small storefront at the corner of N. Pershing Drive and Washington Blvd in Lyon Park, just south of Clarendon.

The Old Bike Shop (2647 N. Pershing Drive) will sell “refurbished” and vintage bicycles, according to the store’s Facebook page. The store will also perform repairs and sell spare parts.

According to a Facebook post, the store has completed most of its build out, and plans to open soon, after obtaining final permits from Arlington County.

Tri360 Opening Soon in East Falls Church

A new store specializing in outfitting those who compete in triathlons is expected to open soon in East Falls Church.

Tri360 is located at 2121 N. Westmoreland Street, just off of the W&OD Trail. The store is built, stocked and ready for customers, but it’s awaiting its Certificate of Occupancy from Arlington County before it can open, according to the Tri360 Facebook page.

Tri360 will sell athletic apparel, accessories and shoes, and will also feature a “full-service” bike store — everything a triathlete needs to swim, cycle and run.

The store’s owners are hoping to be open by the end of the month.

FroZenYo Store Opens in Ballston, More on the Way

A new frozen yogurt store has opened in Ballston.

FroZenYo opened last week in the old Smoothie King location at 850 N. Randolph Street, across the street from Ballston Common Mall. The store offers more than a dozen flavors of frozen yogurt and nearly three dozen toppings. Frozen yogurt flavors include original tart, vanilla, chocolate, cookies and cream, red velvet cake, cake batter, coffee, butter pecan, dulce de leche, mango, coconut, kiwi strawberry, and raspberry pomegranate tart.

The store is open from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10:00 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. We’re told the store is in the process of applying for an outdoor seating permit.

The store is owned by Kevin Grevey, Jr. and his father, retired NBA star Kevin Grevey. Grevey played for the Washington Bullets from 1975 to 1983 and helped the Bullets (now the Wizards) win their only NBA championship.

The junior Grevey tells ARLnow.com that he’s currently working on a lease for a FroZenYo store in Rosslyn. He’s also exploring the possibility of opening a store in Clarendon.

At least two other frozen yogurt shops are currently in the works in Arlington. A Menchie’s frozen yogurt store is under construction on Columbia Pike, in the Penrose Square development. A Sweet Frog Frozen Yogurt store is under construction in the Arlington Ridge shopping center on S. Glebe Road.

Petco Store Coming to Pentagon Row

An Unleashed by Petco store will be replacing the former Hallmark store at Pentagon Row (1101 S. Joyce Street), the shopping center confirmed on its Facebook page today.

ARLnow.com reported in June that the Hallmark store was closing on July 29 and that employees were telling customers that it would be replaced by a Petco store. At the time, a Petco representative was unable to confirm that report.

Unleashed by Petco is a “boutique” version of the pet retailer’s large-format stores. Arlington’s first Unleashed store opened on Lee Highway last May.

No word on an exact opening date, but Pentagon Row says the new Unleashed store will be holding a grand opening at some point this fall.

Weezer Concert Won’t Be Taking Place at Mall, After All

It turns out we were wrong to assume that a Weezer concert that was said to be taking place “near The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City Microsoft Store” next weekend, in honor of the store’s grand opening, will be taking place at the mall. Or in Virginia, for that matter.

A PR rep emailed us today to let us know the concert — scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 11 — is actually taking place at the Warner Theater in D.C. The original media advisory (which omitted the Warner Theater detail) said the concert will be taking place at 2:00 p.m., though the band’s website says it’s scheduled from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Weezer fans can get tickets to the event by visiting the Microsoft Store’s Pentagon City mall grand opening on Thursday, Aug. 9. Starting at 10:00 a.m., the store will distribute free wristbands for admission to the event, in pairs of two, according to the Microsoft Store website. The first 200 people in line will also reportedly get a wristband for a meet and greet with the band.

A few lucky people who get in line early on the 9th will also have the chance to play Microsoft Kinect with Washington Wizards star John Wall later that day.

Weezer to Play Concert for Pentagon City Microsoft Store Opening

(Updated on 8/3/12) A Microsoft Store location is opening in Pentagon City mall next month and the company is bringing in some star power to help mark the occasion.

The store — which sells Microsoft products like software, gaming devices and phones — is officially opening at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 9. A grand opening ceremony that morning will be followed up with a Microsoft Kinect demonstration by Washington Wizards point guard John Wall at 6:00 p.m., and with an even grander event on Saturday, August 11, featuring a performance by the band Weezer.

The concert will take place at the mall Warner Theater at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, according to a company rep.

In addition to the rock concert and basketball star, Microsoft will be donating $1 million in software to “local organizations that help create opportunities for local youth” at the grand opening.

There are 20 Microsoft Stores across the country, with another 10 that are listed as “opening soon.” According to a press release, the Microsoft Store offers the following:

  • “A curated assortment of products, including Windows 7 PCs, Windows Phones, Kinect for Xbox 360, Office 2010 and more.”
  • “A range of tech trainings, business-ready PCs, phones and more.”
  • “Community organizations are regularly hosted in the theater space and the employees are out in the community supporting local causes.”
  • “Through a partnership with Skinit, customers can show off their personal style and design their own lids and skins for laptops, phones and Xbox.”

CVS Store Opening Soon in Pentagon Centre

The new CVS store in Pentagon Centre (1201 S. Hayes Street) is getting prepped for its upcoming grand opening.

A representative from CVS corporate headquarters tells us the store is scheduled to open to the public on Sunday, July 29. Workers can be seen inside stocking shelves and putting finishing touches on the store.

The space has been vacant since Borders moved out last year, after the chain went bankrupt and closed all its stores across the country.

Grateful Red Wine Store Now Open in Clarendon

Grateful Red, a new boutique wine and gift store from the owners of Screwtop Wine Bar (1025 N. Fillmore Street), is now open in Clarendon.

Located at 2727 Wilson Blvd, in the old Shoefly space, Grateful Red will carry (the store is still building its inventory) 500-600 bottles of wine, primarily from lesser-known independent producers, including local Virginia wineries. The store also offers beer, gourmet snacks and cheeses, and gifts.

While Screwtop will continue to operate its small retail wine shop, owner Wendy Buckley says she opened Grateful Red in order to offer more variety to customers. Many of the wines at the store can’t be found elsewhere in the immediate area, she said.

“When someone comes here, they won’t see a lot of wines they see in grocery stores,” she said.

Buckley said she’s happy to have hired some of the former staffers from Best Cellars, the Clarendon wine store that closed last year. She said the closing of Best Cellars in Clarendon wasn’t due to a lack of business. Instead, Buckley suggested, the store was doing well, but closed due to financial problems with the parent company.

Store General Manager Amanda Weaver-Page, who formerly managed the Best Cellars location in Dupont Circle, will be offering wine classes at the store, including “wine 101” and classes that focus on specific wine-growing regions.

Buckley noted that the store is pet friendly, takes pride in its sense of humor. Gifts on sale include funny t-shirts, bedazzled flasks, and an ice cube tray that makes ice in the shape of the Titanic. Although the staff is knowledgeable about wine, Buckley says they “don’t take themselves too seriously.”

Future plans for the store include adding the capability to fill beer growlers, and launching a wine basket delivery service for the D.C. metro area.

New Froyo Store Coming to Lee Harrison Shops

A new frozen yogurt store may be coming to the Lee Harrison Shopping Center.

According to a Facebook page, a Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt store is coming to the shopping center.  Building permits were issued late last month (May) for the store, located at 2439 N. Harrison Street. Tutti Frutti will replace the former Serendipity store, which sold home furnishings, decorations and gifts.

No word yet on when Tutti Frutti will open, but the Facebook page lists the store’s hours (once it does open) as 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

With 580 locations in 23 countries, Tutti Frutti says it’s “the largest self-serve frozen yogurt brand in the world.” The franchise has a roster of more than 50 flavors of frozen yogurt, along with numerous fruit, candy and other toppings.

Recently the company introduced soy frozen yogurt, a fat-free, dairy-free and vegan-friendly alternative to traditional frozen yogurt.

New Stores Opening at Pentagon City Mall

A number of new stores have opened or are planning to open soon at The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City.

A Bose store is now on the mall’s Metro level (ground floor). According to a mall press release, the location is a Bose “Personal Audio Store,” described as “the newest concept retail store featuring select products for the on-the-go customer who wants Bose to be a part of their active lifestyles.”

The Limited has moved into a new storefront in the mall. “The newly enlarged store will continue to offer the exclusive array of The Limited brand clothing and accessories and will introduce eloquii, their new line of full-figure fashion for plus sized women,” the press release says.

Coach is launching its first “dual concept” side-by-side men’s and women’s store in the nation. Set to open in “early June” on the mall’s second level, the expanded store will “feature a full line of Coach, America’s preeminent designer brand for both men and women.”

Tumi is scheduled to open a new showcase store on the mall’s second level. The travel and business accessory maker hopes to open on June 14.

Chioptle is set to open in the food court at some point during “the week of June 14.” The Mexican restaurant will be located next to a Taco Bell restaurant.

Finally, a Microsoft Store is expected to open at some point later this year. A rep says the store will be “opening soon” — but declined to elaborate. Microsoft currently has 20 retail stores in the United States.

“These incredibly successful retailers enhance the powerful and exciting offerings at The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City,” mall marketing director Todd Jerscheid said in a statement. “We’re extremely pleased to welcome their brands and unique fashion forward designs to our center.”
