NKD Pizza Closes in Pentagon City

NKD Pizza, the pizza chain formerly known as Naked Pizza, has closed its Pentagon City location.

The pizzeria, in the Pentagon Row shopping center at 1101 S. Joyce Street, opened in July 2011, touting unique pizza recipes and all-natural ingredients. Subsequently a Ballston/Virginia Square location opened in 2012.

Today, the Pentagon City’s location was closed, with brown paper covering the windows and a sign posted on the door.

“Thank you so much for your past patronage — we’ve enjoyed serving you at this location for the past five years!” the sign read. “We would love to continue serving you as a carryout guest at our Ballston location.”

The Ballston NKD Pizza store is located at 933 N. Quincy Street.

TJ Maxx Coming to Pentagon Row

A TJ Maxx store is coming to Pentagon Row, according to a building permit.

The store appears to be under construction in the former Hudson Trail Outfitters space on S. Joyce Street.

The outdoor retailer closed the store last year as the company shut down after nearly five decades in business.

Discount fashion store TJ Maxx will be one of the largest retailers by square footage at Pentagon Row, along with the existing discount shoe store DSW, which is located in a similar retail space on the same block. The nearest existing TJ Maxx stores are in Falls Church, D.C. and in Alexandria’s Potomac Yard shopping center.

Arlington to Get Tourism Promotion Boost — A slight increase in Arlington’s hotel tax, approved by the County Board over the weekend, will allow the county to boost its tourism promotion budget by $1.25 million. The hotel tax increase was years in the making, as Arlington sought authorization from the state legislature, which stripped the county of the ability to levy the tax surcharge in 2011. Fire Station 8 Recommendation — The County Board’s Fire Station No. 8 task force is recommending that the current, aging station be torn down and a new, larger station be built in its place. The cost will be $5 million higher than the county’s estimate for what it originally wanted to do: move the station to county-owned land near Marymount University. New Temporary Home for County Buses, Vehicles — The County Board has approved a seven-year lease for a property near Shirlington, where it plans to temporarily store ART buses and county vehicles during separate construction projects. Bank Robbery Suspect Arrested — The “Ball Cap Bandit,” who allegedly robbed a bank near Fairlington while wearing a Brooklyn Nets hat, has been caught. According to the FBI, the suspect is 26-year-old Arlington resident Budder Khan. He’s being charged in three separate robberies. He wore Colorado Rockies and Oakland Raiders hats during his other two alleged robberies. [Washington Post]

Two Dozen APS Students Selected for Governor’s School — “This summer, 24 APS students will attend the Governor’s School for Academics, Mentorship, Visual and Performing Arts or the Foreign Language Academy. Police Investigated Bomb Threat at Pentagon City Starbucks

ACPD K9 unitPolice investigated a bomb threat at a Starbucks in Pentagon City late last week.

The incident happened around 8 a.m. on Friday, Arlington County Police said today, after a Starbucks employee found a threatening note on the floor.

“Business was being conducted as usual when officers arrived,” ACPD spokeswoman Ashley Savage said. “K9s swept the store periodically throughout the day with negative results. There is no suspect description.”

The Starbucks was reported to be on the 1100 block of S. Joyce Street, at the Pentagon Row shopping center. Friday (April 1) was April Fool’s Day.

Despite Warmth, Pentagon Row Ice Skating to Continue Through March 27

As of noon today, there was no one skating at the Pentagon City Row ice skating rink, as the sun shone and temperatures reached into the 70s.

With above-average temperatures in the forecast for the foreseeable future, the skating rink may soon look as much like a swimming pool as a winter wonderland.

Nonetheless, the rink is slated to stay open until Easter Sunday, March 27, according to a press release sent last week.

The rink’s website says it is “open everyday including all holidays, even in warm weather.” Last year the rink was open until March 22.

Big Weekend for High School Sports — On Saturday, Wakefield will face Deep Run in the first round of the 5A state basketball tournament. The game is being played at Robinson High School in Fairfax at 5:30 p.m. Tonight, meanwhile, in what’s being called the hockey rivalry game of the year, Washington-Lee will face Yorktown at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Garvey Discusses Economic Incentive Push — Arlington has been actively making economic development deals, in some cases offering economic incentives to attract new employers to the county. Pentagon Row to Host 80’s Night on Saturday

Pentagon Row will be bringing the 80s back Saturday night.

The shopping center will host an “80’s Night” event from 6-10 p.m. at its outdoor skating rink. The event will include a costume contest and a live DJ.

Warm weather is expected Saturday, with forecasters predicting a high temperature of 61 degrees.

‘Love the Run You’re With’ 5K, Party Set for Valentine’s Day

Love the Run You're With (Photo via Pacers Running)Singles, couples and members of the “it’s complicated” crowd are set to converge on Pentagon City for a Valentine’s Day-themed 5K and party this weekend.

Pacers Running’s “Love the Run You’re With” race is scheduled to take over parts of S. Joyce Street and Army Navy Drive Sunday morning. The 5K kicks off at 9 a.m. and begins and ends at Pentagon Row.

Doubling as a matchmaking affair, the race uses bib numbers that correspond to runners’ relationship statuses. Racers can register as single (“Stupid Cupid”), it’s complicated (“Love ’em or Leave ’em”) or in a relationship (“Co-Dependent”).

From 7 to 11 a.m., the Arlington County Police Department plans to close:

  • S. Joyce Street between S. 15th Street and Army Navy Drive.
  • Army Navy Drive between S. Joyce Street and S. 25th Street.

Registration is $45 online and includes a blanket — one you’ll probably need with the frigid temperatures. Following the 5K, runners can head to Champps at 1201 S. Joyce Street for a post-race party that will have an awards presentation and a karaoke contest.

No Mo Fro Yo at Pentagon Row

The man in the Yogi Castle is giving Pentagon Row a glimpse of a world without frozen yogurt.

The store, near the Pentagon Row ice rink, quietly closed its doors last month.

Yogi Castle has not responded to a request for comment but the Pentagon Row store has been removed from the regional chain’s website. No word yet from landlord Federal Realty Investment Trust as to future plans for the storefront.

Froyo first came to Pentagon Row with the opening of Yogiberry in 2012. A year later, Yogiberry closed and Yogi Castle opened steps away.

Outdoor Hanukkah Celebrations Planned in Arlington

Rabbi Mordechai Newman lights the menorah at Chanukah on Ice 2012 at Pentagon RowWith Thanksgiving seemingly in the distant past, it’s time to prepare for the next holiday of the season, which actually begins this coming weekend.

Hanukkah this year begins at sunset on Sunday evening and ends the following Monday, Dec. 14.

Events throughout Arlington are happening during the eight-day holiday — also known as the Festival of Lights — for the county’s Jewish community. Here are a few of them.

Dec. 6: Yes, Virginia… there is Chanukah!

Temple Rodef Shalom is hosting a community singalong and dinner on the first day of the holiday. The event will feature the teen, youth and children’s choirs in a festive singalong in Quincy Park at 1201 N. Quincy Street. Dinner will be served from local food trucks. Preregistration is strongly encouraged for guests who plan on eating.

The singalong begins at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available online and are $20 for adults, $12 for NOVA Tribe members, $12 for children ages 6-14 and $5 for children ages 5 and under. There is no admission charge for temple youth choir members. The event is open to temple members and non-members alike.

Dec. 8: Chanukah On Ice

Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington is inviting the community to skate and participate in a menorah lighting ceremony next Tuesday at the Pentagon Row outdoor ice skating plaza at 1201 S. Joyce Street. There will be skating from 6-8:30 p.m. with a lighting ceremony at 7 p.m. Dinner of hot latkes, kosher hot dogs and refreshments will also be available.

Admission for all guests is $10 in advance and $13 at the door. These prices include skate rentals, but food will be sold separately. Tickets are available online.

Dec. 9: Clarendon Menorah Lighting and Community Celebration

Community members will gather next Wednesday to light a six-foot-tall menorah in Clarendon central park at 3140 Wilson Blvd, near the Clarendon Metro Station entrance. This celebration is also hosted by Chabad Lubavitch of Alexandria-Arlington and will have food, including hot potato latkes, gelt — or chocolate coins — and dreidels for all guests. The lighting ceremony is free and open to the public.

Lime Fresh Has Closed in Pentagon City

Lime Fresh Mexican Grill in Pentagon RowLime Fresh Mexican Grill has closed its doors in Pentagon City.

Lime Fresh first opened its Pentagon Row location, near the Harris Teeter, in May 2012. It promised a “signature blend of fresh, mouth-watering Mexican dishes, dynamic ambiance, stylized interiors and scrupulous service,” but garnered mixed reviews online.

A Clarendon outpost of the Ruby Tuesday-owned restaurant chain opened a few months earlier, but closed a year later, in 2013.

Ruby Tuesday announced late last week that it was immediately closing 11 Lime Fresh locations and selling eight others in Florida. In completely divesting itself of Lime Fresh, Ruby Tuesday said it was “in our shareholders’ best interest that we exclusively operate our namesake brand restaurants.”
