Meet Guinan, Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week. Guinan is mostly a homebody, but sometimes she catches the travel bug. She’s explored plenty of parks near and far on her harness or in her backpack.

Here’s what else you need to know about Guinan:

Guinan, like her “Star Trek” namesake, is wise, playful and adventurous. When she senses that her humans have spent too much time working, she will insist they get up, stretch and rub her belly. Like clockwork at noon and 5 p.m., she’ll awake from a nap, descend from her cat tower, and enter the living room and announce herself to make sure everyone is OK.

Although mostly a homebody, Guinan does enjoy exploring the great outdoors, either in her backpack or on her harness. She’s ventured to local parks, like Roosevelt Island and Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve, as well as places farther away, like Shenandoah National Park, Vermont’s Green Mountains and even Washington State.

Born in Georgia, Guinan moved to Arlington with her human companions a few years ago. Since then, she’s become much more sociable. She loves entertaining guests, modeling for portraits, playing with new toys, and watching birds out the window or on TV.

This week’s Pet of the Week is Full-Time Frankie, a snuggly Lab mix who recently turned 1. This pup gets his name from 1.) His human’s love for alliterations, and 2.) The wholehearted way he approaches life.

Learn more about Frankie and his life here in Arlington:

Hi everyone. Meet Frankie! (You can find him @fulltimefrankie on Instagram.)

Named Frankie as a result of my infatuation with alliterations and his status as a foster, this nameless black-and-white lab mix puppy was brought home on August 8, 2020. “Frankie the Foster” wasn’t in the best of health for the first few weeks of his life, but he couldn’t have had a brighter or more snuggly demeanor. Fast forward a few weeks and Frankie quickly wagged his way to a more permanent part of the family as “Full-Time Frankie.”

Ironically, Frankie truly fits the bill when it comes to being full time. Whatever he does, he puts his whole heart (and extremely long tail) into it. He’s a quick learner and the most curious pup you will ever meet. Crying baby? Flat tire? Frankie will stop in his tracks in order to fully assess the situation, making sure everyone is OK, before we can continue our way.

Frankie adores just about everyone that he meets! He loves long walks, drinking from the spigot, just about any treat there is and running through the creek at the dog park with his friends. He’s a big bundle of energy, but at the end of every day, he’ll find his way into my lap for a cozy nap before bed.

If you see us around, make sure you say hello! If you’re with your pup, chances are, Frankie will be crouched down looking very adorable while waiting for you to walk by.

Give some love to Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week, Maggie the Cat. This 7-year-old rescue was adopted by her dad earlier this year.

Although she came from a bad situation, she’s an affectionate and chill cat — until she gets the post-dinner “zoomies.”

Here’s what Maggie’s dad had to say about her life here in Arlington.

This 7-year-old feline fur baby was rescued from a bad situation earlier this year by the amazing people at Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. After a few weeks at Homeward Trails, Maggie was then adopted by a Navy man from San Diego who is on orders here in Crystal City.

Maggie is very affectionate, as she enjoys bunting and rubbing her head all over the hands and arms of the person holding her. And the only thing she loves more than sleeping on the couch is sleeping in the lap of whatever human happens to be sitting on that couch.

Though very laid back and “chill,” every evening at around 6 (right after her dinner) Maggie is overcome by a great deal of energy, and she spends the next two hours playing with her stuffed mice, stalking laser pointers, and driving her “cat dad” amusedly crazy by jumping up onto the office desk, getting gently shooed-off back to the floor, and then rebelliously repeating the same routine for at least six or seven laps before finally getting tired out.

Everybody who encounters Maggie the Cat instantly adores her as she never comes off as pretentious or self-important. Rather, Maggie just presents herself as an adorable, loving creature who only seeks the opportunity to be loved and adored back.

And since having been adopted, Maggie is “batting a thousand” in that “CAT”egory, with every new human she encounters.

OK, Boomer… we see you! Boomer, an almost 1-year-old black lab (her birthday is July 20!), is our latest Pet of the Week. She’s quite vocal and isn’t afraid to share her opinions.

Here’s what Boomer’s mom had to say about her:

Meet Boomer. She’s an almost 1-year-old black lab, who, like her mom, was born in Iowa before making the move to the DMV.

Boomer is a true Labrador retriever. People and fetch are her two loves — probably because she needs people in order to play fetch. Boomer is also very opinionated and isn’t afraid to let you know what she’s thinking. She’s happy to share her thoughts if she hears something scary, if she’s really tired or if she isn’t ready to go to sleep. She is quite the conversationalist!

One of the best things about Boomer, though, is her love for little kids. For as active and rambunctious as she is with grown-ups (she’s working on her manners!), she is extra tender around children and knows to lay down and let them come to her, which is one of the sweetest things you’ve ever seen.

Meet your newest Pet of the Week, Memphis. This 16-year-old Rosslyn resident lives a life of luxury. Each Friday, she dons her tux and enjoys seafood hors d’oeuvres.

Learn more about Memphis and her life in Arlington:

Memphis is a 16 going on 17-year-old rock star! After a relatively inconsistent life of being shuffled from shelters and foster homes, this beauty now has a permanent residence in Rosslyn with her mom, a graduate student at Georgetown University.

The two were introduced online over a Zoom meeting during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it was love at first sight. Despite her life hardships, Memphis maintains a kind and compassionate disposition toward everyone. Other than being a poster child for the term “hangry” in the mornings, she loves to explore her surroundings when her curious streak kicks in (especially when mom brings home some new plants or flowers).

She was born with a built-on tuxedo so during a typical Friday evening, you can find her at cocktail hour, devouring some luxurious hors d’oeuvres, particularly fish/shrimp-based, and engaging in some poker or blackjack. When she’s not too busy living the high life, Memphis loves to relax with family and friends! She enjoys getting belly rubs, being consistently complimented on her cuteness, and ending the night with some cuddles.

The latest Pet of the Week is Spencer Hammedatha — but you can just call him Spence. This ragdoll/suspected Maine Coon mix is currently looking for a job — preferably a wet cat food model.

Here’s what Spence’s mom had to say about his life in Arlington:

Spencer Hammedatha, more commonly known as Spence (also Fluff Nugget or Poopy Turd Muffin), hails from a Lady and the Tramp-esque background: His birth mother, a prestigious purebred, refused to go into heat with other ragdolls but quickly gave it up for the transient mutt who came calling one evening. His dad must have had some Maine Coon in him, as Spence sports a striped tail and impressive stature in addition to his pale blue eyes.

Spence is beautiful, and he knows it — which tends to mean he’s willfully ignorant when being berated for wrongdoing. He’s tired of his mom being on his case for still being a freeloader well into his 30s (5.5 cat years), so Spence is currently looking for work. He thinks his talents could best be put to use modeling cat food, especially for video/photo shoots in which the food must be eaten (so long as it’s not pâté — that mush is for plebs).

Spence was a playful kitten and still retains a lot of that same childish energy. More recently, he has directed it towards hikes with his mom and chasing squirrels. Still, age has calmed him some, and he now enjoys long naps in seemingly uncomfortable positions, belly rubs/pats and chewing on plastic grocery bags. While some of his hobbies may bring his intelligence into question, this gentle giant has figured out how to win the hearts of all who meet him.

Tucker, Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week, is obviously a cutie, but he’s a smartie, too. His dad is teaching him to talk with push-buttons!

Here’s what his dad had to say about Tucker’s life in Courthouse (which, if you see him around, be sure to stop and give him pets).

Tucker is a 9-week-old Golden Retriever who is quickly growing up! Tucker loves to explore his Courthouse neighborhood in Arlington while on walks with his dad. He also is very excited to meet any other dogs in the area that he encounters while outside.

Tucker loves bath time and always tries to get in the shower with others. He is obsessed with toys and playing fetch as well as tummy rubs while he lays on his back when he’s sleepy. He is currently starting training with push-buttons to be able to communicate with his dad in human words.

Feel free to say hello to Tucker and his dad if you see them out and about in the neighborhood on walks — he loves the attention!

Meet Charlie, a 4-year-old Pomapoo (a Pomeranian and toy poodle mix). As a puppy, he was full of mischief, but these days he mostly enjoys chasing his own tail, a good belly rub and lots of snuggles.

Here’s what Charlie’s human had to say about his life here in Arlington:

Say ‘hi’ to Charlie because he will certainly say ‘hi’ to you! Charlie is a 4-year old muppet (or, more technically, a Pomapoo) originally from Oklahoma.

As a puppy, he would get into all types of trouble! Most notably, he would break into his mom’s potting soil and try to plant all her shoes in it. He also lived for eating zippers — but only off his mom’s most expensive coats.

Through the years, Charlie has grown into a stand-up chap who loves to chase birds, squirrels and, most importantly, his own tail. His favorite activities include playing fetch, deconstructing stolen carrots and stealing toys from his Maltipoo brother, Ted.

He is always down for a good time or a good belly rub. Charlie is an expert snuggle buddy and a beloved part of his little family.

Say “hi” to Fetch, Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week. Fetch is a playful cat who, like his name suggests, likes to play fetch.

Here’s what Fetch’s human had to say about his life in Courthouse:

Meet Fetch, who relocated to Courthouse all the way from Warsaw, Poland, in March.

As his name suggests, he loves to “fetch” anything that gets thrown, from scrunched up pieces of paper to floss picks and toy mice.

He often thinks he’s in “The Matrix” and will run up the walls at full speed before bouncing off them sideways and then gracefully landing on his feet.

Fetch also loves to sunbathe, partake in a bath, drink from the kitchen tap and visit his uncle over in Shaw, D.C.

Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week is Elima, a 19-year-old Citron-Crested Cockatoo. She makes the perfect companion — and alarm clock.

Here’s what Elima’s human had to say about her:

This is Elima, my 19-year-old Citron-Crested Cockatoo. We moved to Arlington with my other parrot Topper (also a Citron-Crested Cockatoo) and my cat CD, who passed last April at the ripe old age of 17.

She has been my daily companion (and alarm clock) for the past 12 years. Parrots make great alarm clocks as there is no snooze feature, and they will not stop calling until you make an appearance, so there is no more sleeping in on weekends.

Elima, like most parrots, firmly asserts that she has to be the center of all activity, and any time not spent paying attention to her is time wasted. With her human working from home, she insists that she must participate in all Zoom meetings and offer up her opinion on all topics.

Elima can talk, but like most cockatoos, she doesn’t have a large vocabulary, though she can still get her point across. When she wants you to pick her up, she says, “Hop up?” and holds up a foot. She has about 100 ways to say “Hello” or “Hi” and even says “Bye Bye!” when her human is leaving (or she thinks he is). She can also say, “I am the whisper bird…” in a scratchy whispery voice her human calls her “evil whisper bird voice.”

Meet Mickey and Bean, Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week duo. Mickey is a Miniature Schnauzer, and Bean is a Dachshund-Yorkie (aka Dorkie).

Here’s what Micky had to say about his and his sister’s life in Arlington:

What’s up, Arlington? My name is Mickey, and this is my sister, Bean. We are both from Georgia and moved to Arlington last summer for mom and dad’s jobs. We love playing with toys, getting treats and taking walks around the neighborhood in Clarendon!

Bean and I are definitely best friends, but personality-wise we are complete opposites. Bean loves to meet new people and dogs and is a sweet Southern peach. I, on the other hand, can be best described as a Sour Patch Kid — sometimes I’m sour, but then I’m sweet. I have really liked this social distancing thing over the past year and prefer to have my space. In new social situations, I tend to scream at new people and dogs I meet because I am awkward, but, hey, who isn’t? Once I get to know you, I’ll be your best friend, especially if you have treats.

Please feel free to say hello to sweet Bean anytime, she will love it! As for me, if you think you can handle my Schnauzer-tude, my parents will make sure that we have a calm introduction.

See ya around!
