Quigley lives the charmed life just off Four Mile Run in South Arlington.
He loves relaxing, long walks, hard 5K to 10k runs, dips in the water, and confounding his mama with his odd food choices and occasional hunger strikes.
Much like his human buddies, he lives for the weekend and hikes in the mountains, especially at his grandma’s house in Blacksburg.
Always eager to please, he keeps his mama safe from UPS trucks, delivery vehicles and phantom passersby.

Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week is Hank, a recently rescued 8- to 10-year-old mix from Puerto Rico.
Here’s what Hank’s parents had to say about his new life in Arlington:
Allow us to introduce Hank (aka Hankster, Hank the Tank when he burrows through the brush or Hanky Panky when he does something mischievous). Actually, it doesn’t matter what we call him because he is mostly deaf. An 8- to 10-year-old mix of basset/lab/bull terrier/who knows what, Hank has a mysterious history.
Until a few months ago, Hank was a sato, a street dog in Puerto Rico. He was found in a Home Depot parking lot, apparently hit by a car. The good people of Toby’s Rescue took him in and fostered him for two months. We saw him online and thought we could provide a nice retirement home for him.
Since coming to Arlington in early February, Hank has had his first experience with snow, ice, squirrels, foxes and deer. Despite all of these changes, Hank has been a great dog since his first day here. He’s met several other great dogs in the neighborhood and has a budding bromance with Romeo, his buddy next door. If you see us out for a walk, please say hi to Hank — you just might need to speak up a bit.

The newest Pet of the Week is Rally. In his free time, he enjoys lounging in the sun and eating snacks. (Don’t we all?)

This is Rally! He’s a bit on the older side but is still very playful on walks. He enjoys lying in the sun, barking at rabbits and eating yogurt — his favorite snack!
We first met him two years ago, when he was around 6 or 7. We adopted him from Lost Dog after seeing him on the website. On our first visit, we immediately loved him. The shelter gave him the name Rally, and it didn’t take him long to start responding.
As well as responding to his name, he also knows a few tricks! He can sit and lie down. His favorite snack is yogurt, but he also loves tortilla chips, peanut butter and, of course, his dog food.

Give some virtual head scratches to Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week, Loki. This sweet, cuddly boy was rescued in November 2019. (His family is still unsure of his breed so any guesses are welcome!)
Here’s what Loki’s humans had to say about him and his life in Arlington:
Loki is a sweet dog who was rescued over a year ago. He enjoys cuddling, head pets, playing with his stuffed animals (his Trump doll is a favorite to tear apart), and going on hikes around the DMV area, especially Donaldson Run. He is still unsure of water but loves to sunbathe.
He also has FOMO (fear of missing out), so he loves that his owner, Katie, has been working from home and that quarantine has kept her and her sister around the house most days. He loves to look at you with his sweet, sad eyes and sit on your lap pretending he is the size of a lap dog.

Meet Athena, Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week and a true Greek warrior. (Seriously, she’s bilingual and responds to both English and Greek!)
Here’s what Athena’s humans had to say about her:
This is Athena. She’s half Bichon and half Shih-Tzu, but her spirit is 100% Greek warrior. At 15 months old and an intimidating 14 pounds, Athena has no trouble running with the big dogs. She loves to jump, run at high speed and get in big dogs’ faces. With her mantra of “constant vigilance,” Athena patrols the mean streets of Rosslyn looking for abandoned chicken bones, discarded take out and… security threats, of course.
Like her namesake — the Greek goddess of war and wisdom — Athena has an academic side to her. She is bilingual, responding to both Greek and English, and hopes to travel to Greece someday to study its history and culture. She spends her free time subjecting human socks to stress testing to better understand their composition and durability and exploring the feasibility of various hiding places for her smart bone.
Athena has a sweet and funny side, too. She keeps her humans entertained with her antics and loves to snuggle on the couch with them each evening and go on midday walks with her auntie who lives down the street.

Meet Bentley, Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week. Bentley is new to Arlington, and he’s excited about these warmer temps, so he can start exploring his new city and making friends!
Here’s what Bentley had to say about his life in Arlington:
Hey y’all! I’m Bentley, a small sheltie born and raised in Georgia. I moved to D.C. with my mom four years ago, and we just recently relocated to Arlington. With warmer weather on the horizon, I am excited about getting out and exploring my new city (safely, of course) and meeting new friends — both furry and two-legged.
I love treats, toys and nap time. I’ve also done my fair share of traveling! My mom and I like to take short little weekend getaways to escape the city. We’ve been to Annapolis, Richmond, Charlottesville, Winchester and Williamsburg — to name a few. If you have any suggestions please let my mom know in the comments!
I’m always a good boy. Mom calls me her little prince. I know I am spoiled and get everything I want, but I was also taught the importance of giving back. When we were cleaning out for our move to Arlington, I told my mom I wanted to donate some of my new/gently used toys, blankets and sweaters to other animals in need. (See last pic.) We were able to donate to Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, a local organization in Arlington. I really hope they enjoy their new goodies!

Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week is Carson, a 4-year-old former racing greyhound.
Here’s what Carson’s family had to say about his life in retirement in Arlington:
Carson is a 4-year-old former racing greyhound. He has been loving life in retirement since we adopted him in December. He’s taken some time to come out of his shell, but now he is obsessed with us — so much so we have to work on his separation anxiety!
Many people think greyhounds are full of energy since they are so fast (they can reach up to 45 mph), but greyhounds are very relaxed, low-energy dogs. In fact, Carson’s favorite activity is sleeping, which he does for about 20 hours per day. He recently discovered his humans’ bed, and it’s his new favorite place. While he sleeps, he can often be found “roaching,” a position where he lies on his back with all his legs in the air.
Aside from sleeping (and eating, too, of course), he loves exploring Arlington on long walks, playing fetch, sunbathing, snuggling with his toys and cuddling with his humans. He’s also happy for the warm weather and enjoying time outside without having to wear one of his coats.

The first time Matt and Vicky Eichler saw Jazz, she was in a crate coming out of baggage claim at Reagan National Airport.
“They sounded the big siren at Reagan National and she came through the little cargo thing,” says Matt. “And she was born to us.”
That was in 2002.
Today, Jazz (short for “Jazzmatazz”) is a newly-turned 19-year-old, toothless, miniature dachshund who lives with her caretakers in the Arlington Forest neighborhood. And this birthday girl (her birthday was March 19) has gone Arlington viral.
As ARLnow’s Pet of the Week last week, Jazz made quite an impression. On Facebook, Jazz’s story have received more than 250,000 impressions, 16,500 likes, 650 shares, and 1,300 comments — and counting.
It’s the most viral Pet of the Week post on social media that anyone here can remember. (In terms of readership on the ARLnow website, Jazz was unable to overtake the all-time Pet of the Week pageviews leader, a pet rock named Steven.)
It’s not totally clear why Jazz has stolen the hearts of an NHL arena’s worth of Facebook users, but her caretakers think it’s because she’s lovable, cute, and alive.
“All of our neighbors when they see her say ‘Oh, she’s still alive?’ and we say ‘Oh, yeah!,” says Matt.
Nineteen years ago, the newly-married couple was looking for a dog to carry on the family legacy.
“My family has had dachshunds in their family since 1980,” says Matt. “And Vicky really wanted a dog, so [she] emailed a number of breeders.”
They found a match, but the dog was all the way in Louisiana. So, the young pup took a flight by herself to meet her new family.
“She came with the name ‘Jasmine,'” says Vicky. “But I didn’t like it. It was too girly.”
So, they named her Jazzmatazz. With her Louisiana origins, Vicky says that the name “totally fit her.”
That first day with her new family was full of surprises.
“We brought her home, went to the backyard, and she instantly knew how to play ball,” says Matt. “It was pretty amazing. She was more than eager to play and push [the ball] back with her nose and chase it down.”
Jazz also didn’t bark in her first days, but that changed, oddly, once she saw herself for the first time.
“She was really quiet. And then she saw herself in the mirror and started to bark for the first time,” says Matt. “Then, we couldn’t shut her up after that.”
A few years later, the Eichler got another addition to their family.
“When we brought [our son] home from the hospital, Jazz welcomed him to the house,” says Matt. “She would pop up on her hind legs and look into the cradle.”
On walks, Jazz was protective of the baby, barking at passers-by.
“She was a good older sister,” Matt says.
As the years have passed, Jazz has slowed down a bit. Her eyes have gradually gotten worse, her hearing is going, and her mobility isn’t great. But she still has a great sense of smell, always tracking down her treats.

Meet Charlie and Tucker (aka Chuck and Tuck), Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week.
Here’s what their mom had to say about this duo’s life of luxury in Ballston.
Charlie and Tucker live a posh life up in their Ballston apartment, lounging in their cat hammock, chasing lasers and using their custom-built poop hut.*
Charlie enjoys the simple things in life, sleeping his days away and finding a good box to squeeze into (provided by his Mom’s Amazon shopping addiction, of course). Tucker, on the other hand, is the baby of the family and lives a more active life, carrying around fuzzy toys while waiting for someone to play fetch with him or plotting his next sneak attack on his big brother. Together they live their frenemy lives as Tuck and Chuck, running around the apartment looking to wreak havoc on Mom’s Zoom meetings.
Both kitties are rescues from the NoVA area. Charlie is from the Arlington Animal Welfare League and Tucker from the NoVA SPCA.
*Poop hut is the term coined to describe the cabinet built by Mom and Dad to conceal the litter box. Is it a fancy cabinet, or is it a wooden structure to mask the smell…? Nobody will ever know.

Here’s what Jazz has to say about her long life in Arlington:
Hi there. I’m Jazz, a miniature dachshund with chocolate dapple coloring. Sounds like a great ice cream flavor, right?
I was born in Louisiana when my soon-to-be parents saw a picture of me online and bought me through PayPal. I quickly hopped on a flight to DCA when I was 3 months old (as an unaccompanied minor) to join my new family in Arlington where I have lived ever since. I’ve visited a couple of the local dog parks, but the big dogs were just too much, so you most likely would have met me near my Arlington Forest home or in Lubber Run Park.
Can you believe I just turned 19 years old on March 19? I used to love retrieving balls, shredding stuffed animals and chasing squirrels. I even learned how to do a whole bunch of tricks, but those days have come and gone. In my old age, I’ve slowed down quite a bit, but I still get around OK. I will chase down a good-girl treat and can make my way up the ramp onto the couch where I like to burrow into a cozy blanket and root for the Capitals with my family.

Meet Harry and Ron, 4-year-old brothers who use their ~magic~ to open doors and photo-bomb remote school, becoming celebs amongst one fifth-grade class.
Here’s what Harry and Ron’s family had to say about these two
The good people at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington may remember them as Tom and Jerry, but those shelter names did not fit with the Harry Potter phase of our household at the time. Alas, meet Harry and Ron, 4-year-old brothers who arrived over Labor Day weekend in 2017 and have entertained humans, playfully pummeled each other, and “hunted” birds and squirrels from the safety of the family room window ever since.
The brothers are as chatty and rambunctious as their kitten days. A cardboard box of any size, a feather on a string or just a plain old pipe cleaner are their favorite tools of the trade. At nap time, Harry, the black-and-white sibling, prefers the perch atop the cat tree where he can keep one eye on the wildlife outside and one eye on the humans inside. Ron, gray and white, is particularly fond of the youngest human of the house, following him from room to room and sleeping in his bed every single night.
And during the pandemic, their ability to push open doors has helped Harry and Ron gain celebrity status in a certain Arlington fifth-grade class by frequently photo bombing virtual school lessons.
