Arlington Pet of the Week: Westley

Meet Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week, Westley, a friendly 8-year-old mix who loves food and backyard zooms.

Here’s what Westley’s family had to say about his life in Arlington:

Westley is an 8-year-old mix who loves life as long as food is involved. He has never met a human he does not want to say hi to and feels equally about dogs. If someone came to his parents’ house to rob the place, he would greet them rather than be a guard dog. He really wants to catch a squirrel or bunny one of these days, but despite his large nose, he is not a hunting dog.

Westley was rescued in 2017 at the age of 5, but according to his parents, to this day he still acts like a puppy, so they think he might be lying. After a few weeks of concern by his parents, Westley did learn his new name and how to sit followed by a few other tricks. He loves to perform his tricks (sit, down, stay, roll-over and twirl) every evening if he’s not able to do his backyard zooms. Last year, a fox and some kits moved underneath the shed, which curtailed his backyard zooms for a few months. He still has dreams that they will return to play one day.

Westley has been a great foster brother to over 30 rescues pups. He has shown them the ropes and helped more than few come out their shells. Recently, he has become a big brother, which has made him request more cuddles from his parents. He does allow his 6-month-old human brother to grab his fur by the handful in return for wet kisses all over. He is looking forward to the near future when he will be chased around the house by a drooling furless brother. Until then he will sleep on as many pillows at once as possible.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Tula

Meet Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week, Tula, a 16-year-old well-traveled kitty who was originally rescued in Jerusalem.

Here’s what her family had to say about her life in Rosslyn…

Tula is a sweet-natured, well-traveled and ~mature~ cat. (She is 16 years old!) She still has lots of energy and loves to explore her new apartment.

When she isn’t supervising her Rosslyn neighborhood comings and goings from her seat on the windowsill, she is most content to keep her humans company by cuddling up next to them and making them feel loved. She always makes sure to make enough time to snuggle up with her favorite blanket, though!

Tula was rescued from the streets of Jerusalem when she was just 5 years old. Since then, she has been around the world, having lived in Mexico, Ireland and Saudi Arabia. She is an expert traveler at this point but is happiest to have settled here in the U.S. with her new Arlington family!

Meet Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week, Wally, a golden retriever whose tongue is almost as long as his tail.

Here’s what Wally had to say about his life here in Arlington.

Hi, I’m Wally, a 6-year-young golden retriever who is often mistaken for a puppy! I am best friends with my 3.5-year-old human brother. I’m often compared to Ed the hyena from “The Lion King” because my tongue is almost as long as my tail, and I am good at providing comic relief. Haven’t we all run into a glass door or got stuck under the couch? Just me? OK.

I am really helpful with vacuuming up food on the floor, but I shed everywhere, so I think this is a pretty even trade if you ask me. I’m a great WFH co-worker because I sleep and/or space out for about 22 hours per day. I love a well-made Puppuccino with extra shots of whipped cream.

Lastly, I want to give a BIG bark to all the healthcare and frontline workers who are helping to vaccinate all my human friends so I can have playdates again soon!

Say “hi” to our latest Pet of the Week, Leif, a 4-month-old rescue who’s adjusting quite well to her life here in Arlington.

Here’s what Leif’s owner had to say about her:

Leif, meaning “dearly loved,” is named after her owner’s first puppy who sadly passed at just 14 weeks. This energetic girl is a 4-month-old rescue from Mississippi who is ready to take on the world!

She enjoys exploring the streets of Arlington and saying “hi” to everyone she encounters — humans and dogs alike! She loves the neighborhood and all of the furry friends she gets to meet on her daily walks. Her favorite things to do are dig in the grass and pick up sticks to chew.

She is praying for more snow in the forecast and loves eating and rolling around in the fresh powder!

Arlington Pet of the Week: Thor

Meet Thor, an 8-year-old boxer/terrier mix who’s blind.

Thor insisted his dad submit him for Pet of the Week, so here’s a little more about Thor:

Thor is an 8-year-old terrier/boxer mix who loves doggie ice cream and puppuccinos. He was rescued on March 9, 2019, a day after his birthday, by a mostly decent guy. He is totally blind, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying life in the beautiful city of Arlington. He has figured out that the meaning of life is to eat, sleep and walk around once in a while.

Every year, his New Year’s resolution is to eat more ice cream and sleep more on his comfortable bed. He has got a single dad who is handsome — but obviously not as much as him. He doesn’t know many games but likes to play hide-in-plain-sight-and-seek. He is a master of finding his dad based on smell and sound.

He also enjoys catching squirrels and birds in the backyard. Although he hasn’t been remotely successful in catching them, he believes in never giving up. Thor would appreciate it and even impart life wisdom upon every one who follows him on IG @Thor.Blinddoggy.

Here’s some free advice from him: “If you’re feeling sad in life then buy a doggie ice cream for him, and you’ll feel better.”

Meet the latest Pet of the Week, Leo and Lenny, energetic kitten brothers who are total goofballs.

Here’s what their human had to say about about their lives in Ballston…

Meet Leo and Lenny, or “The Leonards” as I sometimes call them. These are my rambunctious kitten brothers who were born from the same litter. They are full of energy and curiosity and make working from home more fun — and sometimes more distracting. I adopted them from To The Rescue animal shelter in Springfield and brought them back to the city life of Ballston!

They are obsessed with peering out windows, wrestling, letting themselves into the kitchen cabinets and… water. Yes! Water. Anytime they hear the shower or sink, they run in excitement to observe or play in it. The boys love chasing each other around the apartment, then taking naps together. They are also the most food-motivated kittens I’ve ever met. They will come running anytime I open a pantry in the kitchen or am cooking.

They are as much rowdy as they are cuddly and make for the ‘purrfect’ company while being cooped up at home.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Penny

Meet Penny, Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week. Penny is a 1.5-year-old Great Pyrenees mix who’s very active around town.

Here’s what Penny’s human had to say about her life in Clarendon:

Penny is an inquisitive and adventurous 1.5-year-old Great Pyrenees mix who spends her days prowling the confines of James Hunter Dog Park and her nights overseeing the bustling streets of Clarendon from the balcony of her North Garfield Street high-rise. A ferocious fluff ball originally from the streets of West Virginia, Penny has thrived as a NOVA resident since being adopted from City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties in August 2019.

You might see her chasing squirrels at the 11th Street Park, going on runs down Key Blvd or getting compliments on her looks outside of Starbucks while her human dad gets his daily dose of caffeine. When she’s not exploring Arlington, she can be found upside down with paws up on the couch while listening to NPR.

Penny also isn’t afraid to flash her puppy eyes in hopes of coaxing her easily manipulated human parents into sharing some of their vanilla ice cream or Pupatella pizza crust. Just don’t try to cut her nails, give her a bath or take a stick from her. Otherwise, you might fall victim to her earth-shattering baritone bark.

Her kind, caring nature and heart-melting head tilts have made her a fan favorite at all socially distanced hangouts. Her countless Zoom appearances have prepared her well for this long sought-after Arlington Pet of the Week honor.

Arlington Pet of the Week: Kona

Say “hi” to Kona, Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week. Kona is a 5-year-old rescue who enjoys napping on shoes and eating tuna paste.

Here’s what Kona had to say about her life in Arlington:

My name is Kona, and I’ve lived in Arlington for over four years now! My humans adopted me from the Prince William County Animal Shelter back in 2016. I wasn’t even a year old, and I had been found as a stray in the woods. Lucky for my humans, they found me on Petfinder, and I impressed them with my beautiful eyes and sweet purrsonality.

In order to earn my kibble around this place, I hold various jobs. I am the resident bug hunter, the welcome committee, inspector of all things, head bathroom buddy, fur clothing maker and, most recently, I have been promoted to Chief Supurrvisor. The humans decided they wanted me to manage them and started working from home in March. As a result, I monitor their daily activity and let them know when their work is completed by sitting on top of their computers.

In my free time, I enjoy playing hide-and-seek in my tunnel, napping on shoes, eating tuna paste and cuddling with my humans. They learned early on that I won’t tolerate being separated from them, so now we have an open-door policy at home (my supurrvisor skills hard at work!).

I might appear cool and confident, but I actually get a bit anxious when I smell or see other animals in real life. Luckily, I have my online cat furriends to keep me social! Meet Riley Finn, Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week. He’s a friendly 12-year-old Labrador-Rottweiler mix.

Here’s what Riley Finn had to say about his life in Arlington Highlands:

Hi. My name is Riley Finn. Yes, mom named me after a character in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I am a 12-year-old three-quarters Labrador and one-quarter Rottweiler mix. I have lived in Arlington Highlands since I was 12 weeks old. I was adopted from A Forever Home rescue. Mom couldn’t resist my “dinner plate” sized paws.

My most favorite pastimes are anything having to do with a tennis ball (catching, carrying, retrieving). I also enjoy hanging out on my front porch watching the world go by and scaring the heck out of delivery people.

I am super friendly and really well behaved. I like going to restaurants with mom and dad. One time I was so quiet and good that the waiter didn’t even notice I was there until the end of the meal. (Did I mention I’m 90 pounds and hard to miss?) Everyone comments on how handsome I am and that makes me happy.

My sister, Molly, taught me how to tell time before she went to doggy heaven. Now I know exactly when it’s time for dinner or my 9 p.m. treat, and I make sure everyone knows I am starving.

Meet Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week, E.T. and Sheba.

Here’s what E.T. and Sheba’s humans had to say about them:

E.T. is a 10-year-old Siamese and was named by his now 15-year-old human who was fascinated with space when he was 5. He has lived in Arlington for eight years and loves it here. He spends most of his time sleeping and sitting on his humans’ keyboards.

Over a year ago, E.T.’s sister, Sheba (gray shorthair), was adopted from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. She was 2 at the time and full of energy. Her favorite pastime is “how to bother E.T.” — sit on him, chase him around, eat his food, etc.

Sheba has another amazing skill: She knows how to wake up her 15-year-old human. (I know!) She follows a few consecutive steps:

Step 1: Jumping on his chest and getting very close to his face. Sometimes he wakes up, or sometimes Sheba needs to move to…

Step 2: Bitting his fingers. This works most of the time, but she still has a last step…

Step 3: Kneading his face (out of love, of course!) — with her nails! This ought to do it.

E.T. and Sheba are not too bothered by COVID-19 work- and study-from-home restrictions. They like the option to be able to leave their beds and crash Zoom meetings.

This week’s Pet of the Week is Pebbles, an energetic 11-year-old lady.

Here’s what Pebbles had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Hello Arlingtonians! I’m Pebbles. I might not look it, but I’m an 11-year-old lady. I can also still keep up with all those young pups.

I’ve been in Arlington for three years. I spent the first two years in Ballston Place Apartments. I loved it there! The front desk staff always gave me treats and belly rubs before and after my potty walks. I especially loved running around Quincy Park.

These days, you can find me in Alcova Heights since my family recently bought a townhouse. There are so many new smells in this part of town! My favorite activity here is chasing all the squirrels in Alcova Heights Park. But afterward, I need to pass out in my corner of the house to take a nap.

If you see me around town, say “hi” and give me a belly rub! I love new people and am always very happy — except for when I’m around vacuum cleaners. I think those things are the only things I dislike with a passion.
