Arlington’s Pet of the Week is Dinah, a 5-year-old orange tabby who, when not napping, is busy ruling her roost.

Here’s what Dinah’s pawrents had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Dinah is a 5-year-old orange tabby who rules the roost when not taking frequent naps. She was found as a stray kitten by a friend and was named ‘Rebah’ for her bright orange fur. After being lovingly taken in by her future cat-mom, Alicia, she was renamed Dinah after the cat from Alice in Wonderland. She grew up in a high-rise in Courthouse, watching the birds from afar, and now resides in leafy Fairlington, enjoying her newfound interest in squirrels from a ground-level perch.
Dinah has a strong, independent spirit but will certainly be accommodating when some treats are involved. During the pandemic, she supervises her pet parents’ Zoom meetings by making cameo appearances and also takes regular breaks to show how she can nap at ease during the work day next to a laptop. Dinah’s found her way to being a truly loved and cared for member of our family.

Arlington’s Pet of the Week is Elway, a 4-year-old beagle mix who’s lovin’ the work-from-home life.

Here’s what Elway’s Pawrents had to say about her life in Arlington:

Named for John Elway of the Denver Broncos, Elway is a 4-year-old beagle mix. She enjoys sunning herself, cuddling with her moms, gleefully disrupting yoga class, and walking around and supervising the squirrels of Shirlington. She is often mistaken for a corgi. She is, in fact, not — she’s just low to the ground and very friendly!

Elway very much appreciates that the rest of the family has chosen to stay home with her for so many months and is now NOT thrilled when everyone leaves without her! So rude. But Elway is very food motivated and quickly forgives with a treat/carrot/apple/heartworm pill — really, she’ll eat anything.

Her favorite activity is saying ‘hi’ and accepting pets and compliments from all her Arlingtonian neighbors along the Four Mile Run Trail.

See you all soon!

This week’s Pet of the Week is Moon, a friendly boy who moved to Arlington back in June.

Here’s what Moon had to say about his life here:

Hi everyone! My name is Moon, but you can call me Mooney. My pawrents couldn’t go on their honeymoon to Australia this summer, so they rescued me instead! I was in North Carolina for the first two years of my life, but as of June 2020 I am officially an Arlingtonian. Boy do I love it here!

Some of my favorite things to do in Arlington is to sniff every single bush I encounter and say hi to every single dog I meet. I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like! If you see me crouched down when you and your dog are walking by, it’s because I want so badly to say hi, but I don’t want to seem too “in your face.” My mom said that’s bad manners.

My absolute favorite places to go are the vet and Courthaus Social. When my pawrents tell me that we’re going to the vet, I cannot contain my excitement! Clarendon Animal Care has the nicest people ever! They always give me treats and give me so much attention. I also love getting attention when I’m at Courthaus Social. What a fun place! The people who work there are sooo friendly, my humans’ food always smells delicious, and I can almost always make new pup friends somewhere on the patio!

I’m so lucky I’m an Arlington dog now. I hope to meet you soon!

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is brother-sister duo Peanut and Tabasco, who turned 7 in August and planned to celebrate by begging for tuna juice and chillin’ on their deck.

Here’s what Peanut and Tabasco’s owner had to say about their lives in Arlington:

Peanut and Tabasco have been together since the beginning. This sister-brother duo found their new home when they were 8 months old. They haven’t had a worry since.

Tabasco, also known as “Little Guy” or “Baby Lion,” is waiting on the Wizard of Oz to grant him some courage. He spent the first two weeks in his new home hiding under a bed, and seven years later a sneeze still sends him in search of cover. But despite his cowardly lion ways, he bravely yells at outdoor kitties to leave his sister alone. He also makes sure not a crumb is left behind at treat time. Also, do not let anyone tell you cats are color blind. Tabasco loves nothing more than red balls, a trait discovered when kitty-gnawed tomatoes started traveling upstairs.

Peanut has gone through a few name evolutions in her time. She started life as “Nutmeg,” then “Peanut Butter,” but proved a little too crazy for anything but “Peanut.” She loves couch surfing — you know, when you pull yourself along the floor using your nails and the back of a couch. It’s great fun, especially if the lights are out and a scary show is on TV. (Just ignore all the holes in the back of the couch.) Peanut is also a ferocious slayer of sky raisins… or flies. She enjoys chasing them from room to room until they stop buzzing. Then they are boring.

At the end of August, Peanut and Tabasco turned 7. They planned to celebrate by begging for tuna juice and hopefully a cool day to enjoy their deck.

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is Bean, a friendly puppy who is still relatively new to the area and is looking to make even more friends.

Here’s how Bean spent his first summer in Arlington:

Hi Arlingtonians! My name is Bean, and I’m new to the world and to the area. I’m only 4 months old, and in the short month I’ve been in Arlington (no pun intended) I’ve already made friends with the front desk staff at Tellus, the Arlington police force and most of the other pups that live in the area.

My favorite weekend activities are meeting people in the Arlington Farmer’s Market line on my way to get a Puppuccino from Starbucks and visiting the Shirlington dog park to play with my best friend Callie (pictured) and the other big dogs. I also enjoy taking a very long and strenuous walk to Brooklyn Bagel, and my humans hope that once I’m full grown they won’t have to pick me up and carry me back home.

If you see me outdoor dining in Clarendon, grabbing coffee at Northside Social or just laying in the middle of the sidewalk because it is too hot, please stop and say hi (socially distanced of course)!

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is Penelope, a social 1-year-old rescue kitty who loves ruling the roost.

Here’s what Penelope had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Hi, I’m Penelope! I was raised in a foster home for the first six months of my life with Rescue Angels of Southern Maryland and was lucky enough to become an Arlington resident 11 days before Christmas.

I’m a super social, high energy 1-year-old kitty, and no one can keep up with my crazy antics! Feather toys, catnip mice and my tail are my favorite toys, but I’ll entertain myself with anything I can find.

My canine siblings (German Shepherds are the best!) fascinate me with their size, how loud they are when chewing bones and the need to obey our humans. But they follow me everywhere, so I must be the leader of the pack. I’ve learned a few tricks (sit, shake, high five and twirl/spin) that haven’t impressed the dogs yet, but the humans are proud. Being the only feline in the family, I’m sure I’m the favorite.

My mom has been home A LOT since mid-March (she says she’s teleworking, but I’m skeptical) so I try to make an appearance during every video meeting she attends. She acts annoyed, but people seem to love seeing me, so I’ll keep doing it.

Oh, and apparently I’m in the Animal Welfare League of Arlington calendar so look for me in November 2021!

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is duo Daisy and Henry, 4-year-old Shar-Pei pups who love schmoozing with their Clarendon neighbors.

Here’s what Daisy and Henry had to say about their life in Arlington:

Hi Arlington! We’re Daisy and Henry, two Shar-Pei pups. We are both 4 years old and were born in Long Island but have lived with our parents in Courthouse since we were puppies.

We absolutely love everything about living in Arlington — long walks through Clarendon and saying hi to everyone, getting treats at Lululemon, hitting up Loyal Companion for our weekly cookie and dining out at Rhodeside Grill. We’ve also been lucky enough to travel around the East Coast, seeing Montreal, New York, Asheville, Charleston and even Florida. We hope to one day make it out to the West Coast. That said, we’re happy to stay home right now and think it is absolutely awesome that both of our parents don’t go to that thing called “work” anymore. That means more attention and walkies for us.

We’re also honored to be “ambassadors” of the Shar-Pei breed. When we are walking around town, we always get a lot of questions about what kind of dogs we are and what our personalities are like. Although Shar-Pei have a reputation for being standoffish or guarded, we are quite the opposite — we love meeting people and socializing. Daisy especially loves giving kisses, so if you ever see us around town, make sure to stop and say hi!

Meet this week’s Arlington Pet of the Week, Luna, a 3 year old rescue who enjoys long walks and lounging in the sun.

Here is what Luna had to say about her life here in Arlington:

My mommy adopted me from a wonderful rescue organization called Operation Paws for Home when I was just one year old. She was what they call a Foster Failure! I must have mesmerized her with my caramel eyes and endless puppy kisses. Even though I was underweight, Heartworm Positive, and timid, my mom immediately new I was the perfect dog.

As excited as I was to be in my new home, it took me a while to adjust to my new life. I had bad separation anxiety and wasn’t too sure about strangers. I also discovered scary monsters living in my new home, like the evil toaster and ice cube maker. After I started to settle in, my mom decided to send me to puppy bootcamp. She said bootcamp would help my confidence and teach me cool tricks! Oh boy, was she right! I mastered the sit and stay command and my mom even taught me some super cool tricks like “Give me a Kiss” and my favorite, “Avada Kedavra”, which is when I dramatically play dead. I actually got so good at playing dead that I’ll do it without being asked and randomly collapse in public!

I’m now three years old but everyone still mistakes me for a Black Lab puppy. It must be my cute puppy eyes and small stature! My mom thinks I’m part Lab, Italian Greyhound, and Fruit Bat. Some of my favorite hobbies include long walks around Arlington, hogging the bed, sun bathing, and jumping into people’s arms. My mom swears I can jump 5 feet high and should consider a career as an Olympic Pole Vaulter. I love meeting new four-legged friends but sometimes I forget how to play like a dog. I like to crouch down, then spring around like a bouncy ball! My play tactics usually end up confusing my friends, but I’m sure I’ll learn how to do it right one day!

Arlington’s new Pet of the Week is Tyler, a 2 year old mini Goldendoodle who loves to dig.

Here is what Tyler’s owner had to say about their life together in Arlington:

Tyler is a 2.5 year old, happy go lucky, mini-golden doodle who has lived in dog-friendly Arlington his entire life.   Tyler is passionate about his long morning walks going to the dog park to play, digging holes and rolling around in freshly cut grass.   If Tyler sees a squirrel or bunny while on a walk, he gets very excited and chases; in fact,Tyler loves to play with acorns and thinks he is a squirrel sometimes and wants to climb trees.  Tyler has taken many training classes in Arlington to see what he enjoys and he really enjoys nose work class where he finds hidden hot dogs!  He never turns down cheese, a glob of peanut butter, chicken jerky, or belly rubs.  Tyler enjoys getting dressed up for Halloween and seeing all the dog costumes during the last week of October.

Many Arlingtonians can see Tyler walking on Bluemont Junction trail where he loves to jump on the rocks on the trail and look at people biking and walking.    He gladly accepts compliments and enjoys saying hi to everyone.  He is very attached to his mom and she can’t imagine her life without him anymore.  He particularly loves that she is home all the time during quarantine. Tyler is deeply loved and has brought so much joy and laughter to his family.

Meet Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week, Troy, a 7 year old Golden Retriever who loves walks and lounging next to the pool.

Here is what Troy’s owner had to say about their life together in Arlington:

Troy is a 7-year-old, exuberant golden retriever who has spent his formative years as an enthusiastic Arlingtonian. Troy is passionate about his household maintaining a strict schedule by emulating his rooster compatriots with 6 o’clock rise and shine wake-up barks and will hit the hay after watching 30 minutes of nightly news. During the summer, he spends his days lounging poolside while sneaking sips of delicious pool water. He has been known to never turn down a spoon of peanut butter, his mother’s home cooking, a tasty sock, or an unattended dish rag.

Troy often fills his days off with DIY projects, which include digging holes underneath the fence and trimming the bills of baseball caps. His favorite activity is walking with his best friend along the beautiful Donaldson Run trail and loop where he sits patiently accepting pets and expecting compliments from all who pass. New and exciting developments in his life include supervised access to the upstairs bedrooms and spending more time with his family while they telework from home. Troy is looks forward to cheering on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturdays and crunching around in the colorful Virginia fall leaves. He is deeply loved by his family and brings so much joy to their lives.

Meet the new Arlington Pet of the Week, Mini, a 9 year old Calico who enjoys sitting in the sun.

Here is what Mini’s owner had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Mini’s been an Arlington resident since 2012, after being adopted from Washington Animal Rescue League during an adopt-a-thon event that stressed out her soon-to-be human Dad. After narrowing choices to 2-3 of her shelter-mates, Mini was chosen–at least in part–because he couldn’t bear to continue looking at the many cats that needed a home. After settling in to the Commonwealth, she spent a few months in Ballston before moving to a deluxe apartment in the sky in Clarendon.

Mini is a nine-year old Calico who loves her humans and any other humans hands that visit. Additional loves include acting like a sundial by laying in sun spots as they move across the floor every day; reminding her humans of the importance of daily treats; hanging out on the balcony with her faux furry buddies; “helping” her humans while they work; watching sports matches; and visiting in the hallway with neighbors and former Pets of the Week Chip and Queso. She also has the broad feline interests of sitting in boxes, destroying leather furniture (an expensive lesson for her humans), and insisting on laying in any suitcase that is ever opened.  Ever.

While Mini’s favorite humans live with her (presumably), she has many friends across the country who ask about her welfare, request photos, or set up Zoom/FaceTime calls with her humans clearly to only see her. She is well cared for and loved. Mini but mighty.
