Meet Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week, Ford, an 11 year old cat who just moved to Virginia from Maryland.

Here is what Ford had to say about his life here in Arlington since the move:

Hello humans, my name is Ford the Cat. I am 11 in your silly human years; I personally don’t believe in aging, just look at me. The simpletons at the shelter from which I was “rescued” gave me that name and my new subject Caitlin (you would say owner) decided to keep it. It’s unclear if I was named after the car or president; I believe it was just a typo of Lord the Cat.

I allowed Caitlin to move me from Maryland to Virginia during this coronavirus I keep hearing about. So far I must say I love it here; I have three enormous windows to look out (Caitlin calls it kitty TV) and for the first time I have a staircase to randomly run up and down in the middle of the night.

Those who have the privilege of knowing me best remember my charming personality, resting happy face (my humans put pictures of me online under “Ford_Isnt_Angry”) and my one big snaggletooth. Looks aren’t everything but they certainly help.

When I’m not crushing photo shoots I’m quite fond of chasing that glowing red spot that randomly appears on the walls (I’ll catch you one day!), napping in various food shapes, including “shrimp”, “loaf” and “banana” and throwing up in the car. That’ll teach Caitlin to remove the king from his castle.

Meet Arlington’s Pet of the Week, Snow, a 12 year old cat that enjoys smoked salmon for Sunday brunch.

Here is what Snow’s owner had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Snow is a 12-year-old little lady that enjoys bird watching and Sunday brunches – as long as there is smoked salmon. She begins each day quietly waiting in the bathroom until someone turns the sink on for her morning drink. She then inventories her box collection, having a good sit in each one. As each day progresses, Snow luxuriates in patches of sunshine as they traverse the floor from one end of the apartment to the other

Snow is a real foodie. She is happy to share your meal with you. Though she does not like vegetables, she often requests to try them. At least baby carrots make good toys. She is fond of a variety of cheeses and is first to vocalize her feelings on the subject. In Snow’s eyes, all cans contain tuna fish. She can be drawn out of a deep sleep, under the bed somewhere, to that first pop of a can lid being punctured. At only 8 pounds, she manages to keep herself svelte despite eating all the fish and cheese she can get her mitts on.

Each evening Snow gets a brief workout chasing a laser or string. At bedtime she likes to burrow under the covers and snuggle for a little extra warmth, even if it is 107 degrees outside. Snow has a diagnosed heart condition but has already exceeded her prognosis, so we keep things simple and easy for her. She has very much enjoyed the extra snuggle time that quarantine has provided, and all of the meals taken at home.

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is Jettie, a black lab mix who enjoys napping and playing with other dogs in the neighborhood.

Here is what Jettie had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Hello! I am Jettie, rescued from a beach in a place the humans call Puerto Rico. After a very brief time at customs (foster family), my forever humans found me just in time to keep them company while getting stuck at home!

In my role as pandemic support puppy, I have introduced my humans to a lot of other friendly humans and fellow dog friends in the neighborhood, all whom enjoy my signature white sock (paw) and affectionate kisses. When I’m not playing with my friends I like naps, beef liver treats, squirrels, sun tanning, and watching all the things from the window. Occasionally I unleash Jettie the Yeti (monster) to show my humans my enthusiasm but I do not think they have come to fully appreciate my creative energy that I have tried applying to the ends of their rugs, socks, and plants.

The humans say I am a black lab mix, maybe a borador. All I know is that none of it concerns play or food so not interesting. If I see you out and about, don’t be fooled by the bows that I got, I’m still, I’m still Jettie from the block.

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is Banjo, a 1 year old cat who loves to chat with anyone around him.

Here is what Banjo’s owner had to say about his life here in Arlington:

We are very excited to introduce you to Banjo! Banjo is a recently minted Arlingtonian, arriving in the Arlington Mill neighborhood after being adopted from City Kitties this June. He is about 1 year old and is a classic Gemini with tons of personality.

Much like his namesake instrument, Banjo is a very vocal cat, and loves chatting with anyone around, whether that be the birds outside, reflections on the ceiling, his own reflection, and even on Zoom calls! Banjo is an endless ball of energy, and sometimes serves as our resident alarm clock. A little bit of a ditz, he is ultimately a sweetheart who loves to lick your face and share his stinky cat breath.

Banjo is one of many cats affected by feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV+), but this doesn’t get in his way one bit. He has an undeniable zest for life, and makes the most of his days watching the wildlife in the courtyard outside his window perch, playing with his wide cache of toys, and hiding in various nooks and crannies throughout the house.

Meet Arlington’s Pet of the Week, Hank, a 7 month old rescue cat who enjoys playing fetch and looking out the window from his hammock.

Here is what Hank’s owners had to say about his young life here in Arlington:

Hank is a seven-month-old domestic short hair cat who we rescued at 3 months old from Wolf Trap Animal Rescue.  He is named after NoHo Hank from the HBO hit show Barry. As with his namesake, Hank is a super great guy!  He is very cuddly and affectionate, and his purrs can be heard from a different room. He will, however, let you know when enough is enough.

Hank loves to be around his parents. So much so in fact, that he follows them around everywhere! To the bathroom, to the kitchen, and he even tries to do workouts with them in the sunroom. Hank won’t settle until he knows where both of his parents are and that they won’t be getting up from their spot.

When Hank isn’t sleeping in strange posture, or lounging in his water bowl, he is wanting to play with his squeaky toy “Mr. Squeaks”… Sometimes the squeaks can be heard at 2 or 3 in the morning!  Hank has even learned to play fetch! His parents sometimes wonder if they rescued a dog and not a cat!

Hank loves to stare down upon his kingdom via the perch atop his cat tree, or look out at the world from the the view on his window hammock eight floors up.  If you see a friendly cat in the window, don’t be afraid to wave to Hank!

Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week is Whitney, a 10 year old Golden Retriever who loves napping and swimming.

Here is what Whitney’s owner had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Whitney, a Golden Retriever who just turned ten, loves walks through Clarendon and hikes along the Potomac

Whitney came to Arlington when she was one year old via Almost Heaven Golden Retriever Rescue in West Virginia after her owner became ill, and she’s had an amazing life here. Along with her German Shepherd and black Lab mix housemates, she makes up an awesome variety pack.

She’s slowed down from her early days, when she was unusually athletic for her breed and ran like a greyhound, but still has a very active lifestyle and enjoys a daily swim in the Potomac. She also likes walking through Lyon Village and Clarendon, looking for street pizza, and hanging out on the front porch and casually barking at dogs who have the gall to walk past our house. Like any Golden, she’s proficient at napping plus seeking and giving affection. A friend’s chihuahua who stays with us sometimes totally has the hots for her, so she’s still a looker at ten!

Meet the new Arlington Pet of the Week, Sugar, an 8 month old Jack Russell Terrier mix who loves belly rubs.

Here is what Sugar had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Hi there! I’m Sugar, an 8-month-old jack russell terrier mix living in Crystal City. I live with my two humans in an apartment building with some of my best puppo friends. The concierge staff gives me treats and I get to see my friends everyday and play as much as I want.

My favorite things are treats, belly rubs, and running circles around other dogs. I’m small, but fast! I came from NOVA Pets Alive and my humans have been obsessed with me ever since I arrived. I honestly don’t know what they did before they got me. I like to help cook by laying in the kitchen and catching crumbs. I’m a bit of a drama queen when I’m hot, but you would be too with fur in this humidity!

Arlington is the only home I’ve ever known and I wouldn’t have it any other way. There are so many people and pups, and I say hi to them all! So if you see me on the sidewalk, I will take all forms of praise and love.

Meet the Arlington Pet of the Week, Chai, a 9 week old Goldendoodle who loves running around his new yard here in Arlington.

Here is what Chia’s owner had to say about his young life so far here in Arlington:

Meet Chai (Yes, like the tea!), the 9 weeks old Goldendoodle  sauntering the streets of Bluemont who decided to drive all the way from Ohio and brighten the lives of his new family and neighborhood . Obviously, he is very picky about where he goes- He says he needs all his shots before he can venture out further!

Christened after his Indian parents’ favorite beverage, Chai comes with extra sugar. He’s a lover of his humans and a napping aficionado- always loves to cuddle first then retire under his favorite pieces of furniture. When not cuddling or waiting for his next meal, he loves to explore his territory around the house, become suspicious of random trinkets, and sleuth for treats.

He also loves zipping around the yard and pulling at grass as a form of daily exercise. He highly recommends it to all his furry friends!

Meet Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week, Lou, an adopted cat who just celebrated turning 4.

Here is what Lou’s owner had to say about his life here in Arlington:

“We can’t guarantee he’ll make it to 4 years old,” the adoption counselor told me. He was 2 already. As an adult cat diagnosed with Feline Leukemia, he was barely noticed in comparison to the shelter’s kittens. Under lots of goop, crust, and a squint that looked painful, you could catch a glimpse of his sparkling green eyes. There was no way I was leaving without him. I named him Louis, and talked to him the whole ride home about how we would turn my apartment into a castle for him. My plan was to spoil him with endless love for as long as I could. After lots of research, hard work, and medicine, he transformed so much that I often forget he used to be sick. The real Lou began to shine as he got healthier, and getting to know him was an adventure full of surprises. I am beyond happy to report that Lou turned 4 on July 25th!

Lou’s most predominant feature is that his tongue is ALWAYS sticking out, giving everyone he meets lots of questions but even more smiles. The vet confirmed this was simply a goofy quirk of his. He loves being picked up and bounced like a baby. If it’s been too long since he was last cradled, he’ll meow and stand on your feet. He asks for belly scratches by fully extending his legs into a gymnast-like split complete with pointed toes. When home alone, if you look through the window into our living room, you’ll see him sitting patiently right behind the door staring at the handle. As soon as I get home, he’s eager to ask me about my day and tell me all about his. You can hold entire conversations with him like he really understands you. He doesn’t care for catnip but is a madman for mayonnaise and butter. If you leave the fridge open too long, he’ll swipe a stick of butter and carry it off to lick it like a popsicle. He sleeps in bed like a human with his head on a pillow and his body tucked into the covers (taking up as much space as a human, too).

He’s been thrilled that COVID caused me to be home all the time. During the day time he insists on helping with chores, like using his paw to guide the broom while you sweep or carefully inspecting tabletops after they’re wiped down. He’ll sit directly in front of your webcam if he’s impatient for your Zoom meeting to end. When not right by your side, you can find him in the closet in a bin of stuffed animals, just like the scene from E.T. He’s looking forward to December where his picture is featured on the Animal Welfare League of Arlington’s calendar.

Meet Charlie, a 7 year old cat who loves laying in the sun and watching birds from the window.

Here is what Charlie’s owner had to say about her life here in Arlington:

Charlie, also known as Princess Moo-stache, filled the void in my life nearly 7 years ago.  She was adopted from Lost Dog & Cat Rescue when she was 8 months old.  Since then, she has gotten to experience life as a Boston kitty, where she saw record snowfall in the February of 2015 (108.6 inches total!).  Charlie then moved to Potomac, where she thought about being a “Real Housecat of Potomac”.

However, it wasn’t until she returned to Arlington when she really came to embrace life as a Princess.  She spends her days lounging in the sun and telling the wayward bird how ferocious she would be if there wasn’t glass in the way.  And when the clouds roll in, Charlie will knock over her toy bin to find entertainment.

Having just celebrated her 7th birthday, Charlie can confirm that she still has many more birds to stalk (from the window) and sunshine to soak up.  And worry not, she knows that winter doesn’t mean fewer sunlight hours, but the return of the electric blanket!

Meet the newest Pet of the Week, Duke, an 8 month old Cockapoo who loves watching birds.

Here is what Duke had to say about his new life here in Arlington:

Hi – Meet Duke, an 8 month old Cockapoo who calls Arlington home since March 2020. With his boundless energy, he often uses his amazing speed and pouncing to catch people’s attention.

Duke loves watching squirrels and birds around, playing with his hundreds toys around the house, walking around the neighborhood and, of course, eating! He is also a punctual helper around the house by overseeing all food preparation.

Duke is a one of a kind puppy, and we couldn’t be happier to have him as a part of our home!
