Arlington’s newest pet of the week is orange foster kitty Leon whose best friend is a stuffed lion named Leo.

Here’s what Leon’s owner Jolie said the feline had to say about his life as a foster so far:

So here’s my story: See, I was living out in Winchester and my mom decided to bolt. Me and my sisters were like, ummm, hello, we’re only five weeks old. BUT, luckily, these really nice people from the Animal League of Arlington picked us up, gave us this fantastic meal and comfy bed to sleep in. Quite the B&B for a night! Then they found us a cool place to live temporarily… or at least that was their plan. But you see, I am very charismatic and with my charm, wit and good looks, “the lady” of the house gave into MY plan. I’m now officially hers and her two humans. They love me more than I ever thought I could be loved. Not only that, “the lady” found another cool house for my sisters so I can visit! How neat is that?

So back to me and Leo… as you can see I’m in training for when the next foster group comes through my new house. I will be ready to take charge and teach the new kittens all the things kitties need to know. I want to help them like Leo has helped me. “The lady” said you should always pay it forward. So I will make sure I foster my new kittens really well. With Leo’s help, of course.

Our newest pet of the week is 10-month-old rescue puppy Cooper in Arlington Village.

Cooper’s owner Andrea had this to say about the dog she says is learning to come out of his shell:

I’ve had quite the life so far: I grew up as a stray in West Virginia & was then rescued from a high kill shelter by Homeward Animal Rescue which is where my mom found me. Given my history, I was really shy, scared of everything and had a lot of anxiety when I moved to Arlington about 3 months ago. Since then I’ve come a long way and am starting to realize that this new life of mine is pretty amazing!! I’m really opening up to the world, I’m curious to explore new places and I’m super adventurous when I’m not working on my 17 hours of sleep per day.

Being so cute was a curse in the beginning because people kept walking up to me -> so scary! Now I think it’s more of a blessing, because the more people I meet, the more treats I get (not sure why they all taste just like the ones I get at home, but they’re delicious!).

Anyways, I’m really happy in my new home and want to thank all of my neighbors — humans and other animals who play with me — for helping me understand that this is a great place to be.

Arlington’s newest pet of the week is chatty cat Sierra.

Here’s what her owner, Manu, said Sierra had to say:

My name is Sierra. My mom, Manu, was a foster mom for a local rescue for 3+ years and I am proud to say I am the first kitty she couldn’t give back! Some people say we look alike. I am an orange tabby and my mom has orange hair too (though she claims it’s red).

I am a little over 1 year and now that I’m settled in my forever home in Arlington, I love to snuggle with mom and play. I love when her boyfriend (I call him cat daddy Sean) comes to visit, because he will get out this little laser thingy… one day I’ll catch this darn dot!

I have toys all over our little studio. When mom cleans them up, I find them and scatter them tastefully across the room. I am just making sure people know this is MY home!  My favorite thing to do is to hide all my little toy mice everywhere! Mom finds them in bed, the hamper, under the stove — great fun!

I talk a lot and make sure everyone knows how my day has been. I am very good about not leaving the apartment when the front door is open. Usually that’s when my mom talks German to me (she told me that’s where she is from) and I know I better turn around or I won’t get treats filled in my small treat ball — not going to jeopardize getting treats!!

Arlington’s newest pet the of week is Paya, a white cat without much of a tail.

Here’s what owner Lizzi had to say about Paya’s thoughts on living in Arlington County:

Yo!  I’m Paya, but I also go by Papaya, Beans, or Bubby. My mom adopted me from a rescue — that’s where the best pets come from in my oh so humble opinion — and I’ve been living in Arlington with her for the last two years.

If I was running for office, my campaign would be built on table naps, window views, and stylish bandanas for all (especially for me). I also love human food, so please leave your leftovers on the table and I’ll get it for you! C’mon, just leave a girl some cheese and muffins from time to time.

My favorite part of me is my really short tail. People always say I look like a bunny, and that’s fine, I think rabbits are cool too. We both like jumping around and being cute, so what’s there not to like?

This week’s honorary pet is Apple, an 11-year-old Golden Retriever who lives for people, according to her owner Lauren.

Here’s what Lauren has to say about the sporty pup some say is a good luck charm:

Apple joined our family when she was four, and has been a joyful addition ever since. Apple was born in Taiwan but was abandoned by her original owner. Fortunately for us and for her, a wonderful rescue group based in Delaware brought her to America so she could be adopted!

Apple is a fixture at local Arlington Babe Ruth and Arlington Little League baseball games. She loves hanging out at our local parks and getting lots of attention from the players and their families. Many players and teams have even said that Apple is a good luck charm!

Aside from watching baseball, Apple loves children, treats, snuggling, naps, and taking short walks around Lyon Village. Halloween is her favorite when she gets lots of visitors, even if she has to wear a silly costume!

Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week is Riley, a two-ish-year-old Pit Bull-Terrier mix who was found as a stray in West Virginia and adopted from Homeward Trails in Fairfax.

This is what Riley’s owner, Jess, had to say about how the pooch gets the most out of Arlington’s 26 square miles:

Riley adores dogs and humans alike and gets lots of attention wherever we go. She loves going to the dog park and is often found playing and rolling around in the dirt with dogs twice her size. Some of her other favorite things include peanut butter Kongs, lounging in the sun, any sort of attention, belly rubs, and going on walks along Columbia Pike. Her agility is impressive and she almost gave her mom a heart attack once when she jumped over a 5-foot high fence in a friend’s backyard in hot pursuit of a squirrel.

Riley loves meeting new people, so please say hello if you see her out and about! But, be forewarned, she may not stop giving you kisses!

(Updated 08/04/19) This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Rex, a rescue pup who was picked even though his owner came for a different dog.

Owner Lindsay said she “got one look at this handsome face” and couldn’t resist bringing him home instead. Interestingly enough, she told ARLnow that there was another couple who originally intended to adopt Rex — and they ended up adopting the dog Lindsay originally planned to take.

This is what Lindsay says Rex thinks of his new life in Arlington:

I consider myself the King of Arlington, but DEFINITELY my castle. I allow my mom to live with me as long as she feeds me, bathes me, gives me belly rubs, fluffs my bed, allows me to have ample play time at the park with my dog pals, and TREATS. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for. Do you?

I love taking epic pictures and epic naps. I’m excellent at posing as you can see. I love meeting new people and making new friends. In fact, I escaped Grandpa’s yard the other day chasing a squirrel and went on an adventure through the streets of Arlington. I even made a friend who took me on a ride around town until I could be returned. If you see me walking around — come say hi!

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Dexter, a Golden Retriever who was adopted after his first family found he was “too big to handle.”

His owner, Chaira, says this just means Dexter has “more to love.” Here’s what she said the pooch thinks of his new home in Arlington:

When they first brought me to their home, I was sure to test out my new space by eating 4 double chocolate chip muffins, and a whole fried chicken and mashed potato meal, containers, bones, and all. I thought that meant they wouldn’t have any evidence it was me, but somehow they still figured it out.

Despite this, I think they really love me, and I’m really looking forward to my new home here. I think the best part of this new place is these big parks my parents take me to. Sometimes they walk me by what mom and dad call “baseball fields”, but I just call them “toy fields” because I almost always get to come home with a new ball for my collection.

I still have a lot to learn in my new home, but every day I get to smell something new, meet a new friend, and go for a run in the park, and I don’t think there’s anything else I could ask for, except maybe some more of those bacon treats my mom keeps hidden in her purse as if I can’t smell them.

Arlington’s new Pet of the Week is 3-year-old Goldendoodle Jake who recently moved from Maryland to Crystal City.

Here is what owner Nicole, had to say about how Jake’s sees his new life as an Arlingtonian:

When I’m not getting my 17-hours of sleep per day, being told how beautiful I am, or complaining about the service around here (can I get a refill on some water here, someone?), I love watching Caps games with my female owner.  Jay Beagle is my all-time favorite.  I also like taking walks through my new neighborhood (because people tell me how beautiful I am), standing on the balcony and barking “get off my lawn” at no one in particular, eating the section of newspaper that female owner’s male friend is currently reading, stealing remote controls and sponges and laundry and toys from petsmart (but it was only one time and my owner returned it and I was just borrowing it anyway ok), and choosing the most public spot available to do my business.

Today we dub 10-year-old boxer Lab mix Huxley as the Arlington pet of the week.

Here’s how Huxley’s owner Lyndsey described the rescue pup:

We wanted a lazy, friendly dog and that’s just what we got in Huxley.  While his snaggle tooth
can be scary, he is sweet as the day is long.  He weighs around
100lbs, sleeps 20 hours a day and is friendly to everyone he meets,
except the Amazon delivery guy.

Life has changed a lot for Huxley over these 10 years.  Early on he
was an adventurer – swallowing a razor blade as a curious puppy and
battling rattlesnake near Skyline Drive.  Now he is dog-brother to
three wild kids, age five and under.  The responsibility has grayed
his fur, but he maintains a spring in his step while perusing his
hobbies of chasing rabbits in the backyard.  He exhibits great
patience each morning while waiting for our three-year old to
sloooooowly scoop his dog food.  For this, and many more reasons, he
deserves to be Pet of the Week!  We love you Hux!

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Pickles, an 18-month-old Catahoula rescue.

Here’s what his owner, William, had to say:

He loves his new home in Arlington after he was rescued from Texas. He’s a fast learner and loves to eat, so it never takes him long to master a new trick when there are hot dogs on the line. Pickles has never met a human he didn’t like, and likes to spend his day by your side, always prepared for a belly rub.

Pickles loves sneaking up on squirrels and rabbits, even when his human standing next to him gives him away, and he keeps his nose to the ground on nighttime walks pursuing the elusive neighborhood fox. He enjoys watching nature documentaries and video games, and if there’s a hug happening nearby he has to be in the middle of it!
