This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Reddington, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

Here is what the pup had to say:

My name is Reddington, and I am a 5-month-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi! While my colors and markings make me look different, I like that they make me unique!

I was born to a family on a farm in PA. My dog mom and dad were chicken and cow herders! For my first 8-weeks of life, I shared a stall with a horse and my 7 brothers and sisters!

One day, my new parents came to get me and I couldn’t be happier! I learned how to pee outside in just 3 days and slept through the night right away because I get so tired out from playing!

I love to play with my parents and best friend, Bailey, a golden retriever mix! While I hate baths, I love to chase my ball, chew on bully sticks, nap in funny positions, and run around with my stuffed cow and pig, Lady Moo Moo and Sir Piggie!

Even though I’m young, I must say I am really happy and sure like to show it with my big smile!

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Kibble, a black Labrador and a seeing eye dog in training.

Here is what he had to say about his life so far:

My name is Kibble and I’m a Guiding Eyes For The Blind puppy in training. Last August when I was only 10 weeks old, I came all the way from New York and moved in with my new daddy John, a volunteer puppy raiser in Shirlington.

Over the past year, I’ve been taught lots of obedience skills and house manners, and socialized in variety of environments. That’s because service dogs must learn to work around different people, places and distractions.

I get to go with my dad to stores, restaurants, offices and even ride the Metro. I especially enjoy my weekly training class where I practice my skills alongside the other guide dog puppies in my region.

But it hasn’t been all work and no play for me. I love to jog, hike, swim, fetch, tug, chew, cuddle and eat kibble! Dad keeps adding new things to my bucket list, but so far my favorite outings have been to the National Zoo and Nationals Park.

I became so smitten with my foster cat Betty that I convinced dad to adopt her. He calls us Kibble and Betts, and we’re in a relationship.

Now that I’m a big boy at 16 months, I’ll travel back to the guide dog school in October for a test that will determine my future career path. I could be selected for formal guide dog training, the breeding colony, or an alternative career such as a detection or autism companion dog.

But if I decide that I just want to be regular dog, I get to go home with my dad and help him train his next puppy. Wish me luck!

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Sophie, a black Labrador mix.

Here is what she had to say about her life so far:

Hi everyone! My name is Sophie, and I’m a black lab mix. I was born in South Carolina, but my mom and dad adopted me from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue when I was about one year old.

I was underweight, stinky and sick with heart worm, but after a few months I felt much better. I have lots of doggy cousins, and my best friends are Petey and Louie. I don’t have a fur sibling yet, but I’m keeping my paws crossed that I’ll get one soon!

I have a ton of energy and lots of hobbies. Here are some of my favorite things to do: swim, run, jump, get tummy rubs, play with tennis balls, obsessively lick stuff, stalk squirrels, bark at strangers and watch Bravo with mom.

I also enjoy dirty socks, clean socks, pup-sicles, sleeping in the sunshine, and listening to my parents make up songs about me.

Because I had a hard life before I was adopted, some things still scare me. I hate loud noises, cardboard boxes, guitars, golf clubs, Roomba, thunderstorms, maintenance people, and men wearing hats. My mom and dad always comfort me when I’m scared though– that’s one of the reasons I love them.

All in all, I have a great life, and I’m looking forward to a lifetime of trips to the dog park, cuddles, and walks!

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Nelson, a cat who lives in Douglas Park.

Here is what he had to say about his life so far:

I live in Douglas Park Arlington with my mom Joni and dad Tom. Someone found me on the streets of Arlington and dropped me off at the animal shelter in Arlington when I was just 6 weeks old and it wasn’t long before I found my “forever home.”

I live with my cat sisters, Etta and Isabella Rose and enjoy chasing stuffed mice and enjoying a little birdwatching from our dining room.

I am also and avid gardener and love shopping days at Costco because there is sure to be a new “cardboard condo” for us to play in.

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Jude, a half Chihuahua, half Pomeranian, Boxer and Chinese Crested dog.

Here is what his owner, Vanessa, had to say about him:

Hi everyone! Meet Jude – he’s a sweet boy who thinks he is half Chihuahua, half human. Originally from Montana, Jude made his way to us in December 2016, when he was just four months old.

He’s now a full time Arlington resident, but enjoys visiting with his grandparents in Bethesda. An adventure is already in the works to go back to Montana to visit with his original human – Jude might be the best traveled dog in Arlington!

Jude’s ideal day is sitting in his human’s lap while he eats a cheese bone. He takes multiple walks around the courtyard each day – he loves to people watch and chase the birds. Don’t let his cute face fool you – he’s very picky about who he lets into her inner circle. But once you’re in, you’re in for good.

If you’re trying to win over Jude’s heart, the best way is to hold him and give him belly rubs. Once you’re a part of his clan, he’ll sit on your lap and snuggle up to you for countless hours each day.

Some of Jude’s other favorite pastimes include taking car rides, playing with his sushi plush toy, rooting for the Capitals and strutting down the Arlington sidewalk like it’s a runway. He frequents the Clarendon dog park, but prefers to watch the bigger dogs play while he observes from the comfort of his human’s lap.

Jude has made it very clear that it is absolutely out of the question for him to sleep anywhere other than in bed with his humans. As soon as the lights go off, Jude squirms his way under the covers and to the foot of the bed. By the time the sun rises, his head is resting on his human’s pillow, with half his body still under the covers. We’re quickly learning that this is Jude’s world, and we’re just living in it.

This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is a tabby cat named Pippin from the Westover-Madison Manor area.

Here is what his owner, Erin, had to say about him:

Pippin isn’t just a “friend” or a “companion,” he is my best friend and my closest confidant. As soon as we met at the Animal Welfare League, I knew that Pippin was special. His brown tabby coat with its stripes and spots and his bright green eyes with massive pupils seemed to speak to me. His paws were massive, even at the age of just 8 weeks. He reached out and stretched them right in my face as if to say: “Look at how big I will be one day, don’t you want to see me grow?”

Nowadays, his paws don’t seem so big. He is no longer the kitten I met a little less than a year ago. He is now a true “tom cat” with an absurd amount of swagger and confidence. That table in the photo? Yeah, he can jump on it. That door in the photo? Yeah, he can open it. That cup of pens in the photo? Yeah, he can knock it over. This confidence is well founded; I’ve never seen him fail.

Of course, it’s impossible to speak of Pippin without talking about Henry, the Boston Terrier-Dachsund mix who, like me, immediately took to Pippin. The two were fast friends but they have an odd way of expressing this. Henry can be seen multiple times a day dragging Pippin by his scruff from one side of the house to the other. Often times, guests are put off by how frisky the pair seem to be but their play is innocent and mutual.

As soon as Henry steps away, Pippin will reach his paws out and tap Henry and the fun will begin again. Pippin is also always getting Henry into trouble by knocking things on the floor for Henry to eat. When Henry is found mid-feast, chewing a hat or a pen, he always gets the blame, not Pippin. What can I say? Pippin is just too charming for anyone to ever be mad at him!

Everyone who has met Pippin has loved him, even the self-proclaimed “cat haters.”  Whoever thinks that dogs are the only social animal hasn’t met Pippin. He is more than happy to hang out with anyone he meets and will hop right into their lap. He loves to cuddle, play, and will eat anything you give him.

He is curious yet loyal. Most nights, he sleeps right by my side with his head resting on my arm. The one time he was able to escape into the great outdoors he simply sat outside and waited to be let back in. He provided me with constant emotional support through my final year of high school and I’m not sure what life will be like without him next year. Pippin may only be ArlNow’s “Pet of the Week,” but, for me, he is the pet of a lifetime.
