Say hello to Hambone, Arlington’s newest Pet of the Week! Hambone is an affectionate and grumpy fella who loves naps and treats.

Here’s what his owner had to say about him:

Hambone is a long-haired dachshund and basset hound mix.

He was surrendered to A Forever Home, a local animal rescue, at the age of 8 and at the weight of a whopping 57 lbs when his first owner passed away. Due to his old age and weight problems, he had no prospective adopters and was deemed an indefinite foster pet until he was adopted at the age of 10.

Now turning 17 in a couple months, Hambone is down to a healthy 25 lbs and lives with his owners and an adoptive sister named Casserole, a golden retriever and chow chow mix.

Hambone loves to sniff out treats, take naps in the sunroom, and howl along with ambulances or other loud noises. He has both the affectionate behavior of a hound and a grumpy personality befitting an old man. You can regularly see Hambone at New District Brewing Company in Shirlington.

Say hello to Lollie, a gorgeous Golden Retriever and the newest Adoptable Pet of the Week. This fluffy girl loves meeting new people and is looking to settle down.

Lollie’s friends at Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which is currently at or near capacity for its dog kennels, had this to say:

Lollie recently arrived here from one of our rescue partners in West Virginia, and seems to have already settled into city life. She’s a friendly girl who enjoys playing with other dogs and getting gentle pets from people. If you’re lucky, she might even roll over for a belly rub! Lollie also loves playing with other dogs.

While Lollie enjoys meeting new people and is very affectionate, she is not what people tend to think of as a ‘typical’ Golden Retriever who loves any and all interactions with people. She can be nervous and uncomfortable with some people, especially those that don’t pay attention to her body language or respect her personal space.

At the shelter, we practice something called “Consent to Pet” with Lollie (and all of our dogs and cats). When Lollie approaches us for pets, we pet her chest for 2-3 seconds, then stop. If she moves towards us or nudges us with her nose, that’s a signal that she wants more pets. If she moves away or shows other signs of discomfort, we stop petting. Lollie’s signs of discomfort can be very subtle — turning her head away, tension in her face, slight ‘freezes’, lip licks, etc.

It’s important for anyone interacting with her to pay attention to these signs so that you can give her space when she is asking for it. It is very important that her new family, friends, or visitors also use this technique so that Lollie has a choice in her interactions with people and feels more confident.

Because of Lollie’s need for gentle interactions and a calm household, she is looking for an adult-only home, with a family who is comfortable giving her space when she asks for it and encouraging others to do the same.

Is Lollie the furry companion for you? Check out her complete profile to learn more and schedule a time to meet!

Meet Rex, a German Shepherd and the newest Adoptable Pet of the Week! Rex loves treats and is looking for a chill family to spend forever with.

Rex is in shelter at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which is currently at or near capacity for its dog kennels.

His friends had this to say about him:

Meet Rex! Rex’s foster family noted that Rex is sweet and a good boy on the leash.

While Rex has some vision issues, his other senses make up for the vision and he is extremely smart. He knows some cues and is very, very treat motivated and wants to learn more. He loves being outside and going for walks and long sniffs.

His perfect day would be treats (and more treats!), time outside, followed by a nap wherever he can be closest to his human. Rex is fully house-trained and has good manners on the leash.

Rex is very much a go with the flow kind of dog who just likes being with people.

Are you a go with the flow kind of person? Are you looking for a furry companion? Check out Rex’s complete profile to set up a time to meet!

Her special talent is being extremely cute, loving and brave. Her perfect day would be waking up, playing outside, sleeping on the couch, walking around somewhere new, and finally sleeping and snuggling.

If Luna were an ice cream flavor, she would be caramel because her fur is a caramel-like color!

Give a warm welcome to the newest Adoptable Pet of the Week, Finley! This blue-eyed Australian Shepherd is an energetic pup looking for his best friend.

He is in shelter at the Animal Welfare League of Arlington, which is currently at or near capacity for its dog kennels.

This is what Finley had to say about himself:

Hi, I’m Finley! I have a secret to tell you… I’m much more than just a handsome face!

I’m a smart and energetic pup who is looking for someone to understand me and love me for me. The nice staff here have been telling me about something called L.E.G.S., which stands for Learning, Environment, Genetics and Self. These are all the parts that make me… well, me!

I really like to bark and pull towards those people and dogs to let them know they’re not where they’re supposed to be. I’ve been working really hard with the trainers here who are helping me understand that those people and dogs have their own lives and things to do. I get lots of tasty treats when I am calm on my leash!

I also like my people to be in their place — with me! I will dote on your every word and I’ll probably follow you around the house. I can learn simple tricks like sit or rollover, but what if you taught me to pick up your dirty socks from around the house instead? That sounds way more fun!

Oh, one last important thing — I LOVE other dogs! I’ve made lots of doggy friends here at the shelter and would be more than happy to live in a home with other dogs.

So, there you have it! I know I won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. I’m more like a cup of black coffee! A bit of an acquired taste, but the right person will love me so, so much.

Is Finely your cup of coffee? Set up at time to meet Finely by checking out his complete profile!

Meet the happiest puppy and the latest Adoptable Pet of the Week, Scarlett! This 3-month-old pup is looking for a loving and patient family to spend forever with.

Here’s what her friends at Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation had to say:

Scarlett is the happiest puppy who will bounce her way into your heart! She’s about 3 months old and a Staffordshire bull terrier mix.

All she wants to do is play and snuggle all day long. She is super sweet and will cover your face with kisses. Scarlett is energetic without being hyper and is laid back without being too lazy. She has a small scar on her forehead that makes her look like Harry Potter, the floppiest little ears, and a white-tipped wagging tail.

She gets along well with other dogs though she can get a little possessive of her food. She will also need a family that is patient and diligent in house training her. If you’re looking for an adorable happy puppy to love, please consider Scarlett!

Give a warm welcome to the southern belle that is Callie, the newest Adoptable Pet of the Week!

This beautiful 10-year-old girl is looking for a friend to shower her with pets.

Callie’s friends at Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation had this to say:

Callie is a true southern belle — brought from Alabama for a new life in the North, all she wants is a nice soft surface to sit on and a friend or two to pet her.

She politely asks for pets (taps your arm) and also drinks with her paws (like a lady). During the day she’s a very low energy cat, but at night she will trot right up to you to make sure you pet her nice and good.

Callie doesn’t need a lot of space, she’s happy with 2-3 spots to nap in and would do well in an apartment.

Can you give Callie enough pets? Read her complete profile to learn more and to see how Callie spends her day, check out her Instagram @spookyfosterkitty.

Say hello to Monty! This fluffy 10-year-old is Arlington’s latest Pet of the Week. Monty is an avid adventurer who is loved by his humans.

His owners had a few words to say about him:

Meet Monty! He was rescued from California and has lived with his human family for about 5 years now in Arlington.

Like most dogs, Monty’s favorite pastime is napping, a hobby that he has truly perfected over the years. When not napping, he can be found exploring every nook and cranny of the parks around town. But more than anything, he loves a good car ride! Head out the window, paws up, wind whipping through his fur; that’s what life is truly all about for Monty.

Although Monty turns 10 years old this month, he still acts and looks like a puppy. He may be a little timid at first around new folks; however, he warms up quickly (yummy treats especially help).

Moreover, instead of playing with normal dog toys, Monty loves to grab his humans’ socks and run around the apartment for a game of chase.

An avid adventurer, Monty loves exploring local and regional hidden gems. He loves going sunbathing at the Chesapeake Bay, not to mention the crabbing! His other favorite activity is running down the hall to fetch his favorite ball at top speed. Monty is not an average dog and his humans absolutely love him!
