One Hurt in ART Bus Crash

ART busOne person was hospitalized this morning after a crash involving an Arlington Transit bus.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of S. Glebe Road and Four Mile Run Drive, according to police.

The ART bus “was struck by a car attempting to change lanes,” said Arlington County Police spokesman Capt. Bruce Benson. “One passenger on the bus complained of neck pain and was transported to the hospital. There were only two other passengers on the bus at the time of the accident and they left the scene before police arrived.”

The victim’s injuries were believed to be minor.

Police: Man Fights and Bites Bouncers, Officers in Clarendon

(Updated at 4:10 p.m. on 12/23/21) A man’s night out in Clarendon took a turn for the worse when he allegedly tried to fight a bouncer who was kicking him out of a Wilson Blvd bar.

The incident happened around 1:40 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police showed up and tried to restrain the man, who proceeded to resist and kick the officers, according to a crime report.

From ACPD:

ASSAULT ON POLICE x2, 161023003, 3100 block of N. Wilson Boulevard. At approximately 1:40 a.m. on October 23, a fight ensued inside a restaurant. Multiple officers approached a subject who was wrestling a bouncer and attempted to remove him. In the process of being removed, the subject bit two bouncers. When the subject was handcuffed, officers attempted to remove him from the premises but he wrapped his legs around a support pole and refused to let go. He continued to not comply and kicked two officers in their faces. Dylan Monroe [Redacted], 25, of an unknown address, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding, assault on police, assault & battery, disorderly conduct, and drunk in public.

Police Investigate Drive-By Armed Robbery in Crystal City

Fairfax County police car lightsA trio of suspects, one of whom was armed with a gun, robbed a man of his belongings in Crystal City on Saturday, police say.

This incident happened near the relatively busy intersection of Crystal Drive and 23rd Street, just after 8 p.m. Police are looking for the three men allegedly involved in the drive-by robbery.

From an Arlington County Police Department crime report:

ARMED ROBBERY, 161022054, 2300 block of Crystal Drive. At approximately 8:10 p.m. on October 22, officers responded to the report of an armed robbery. Upon investigation, it was determined that a male victim observed a vehicle pull up next to him and two male subjects exited the vehicle. One subject brandished a firearm and demanded the victim’s belongings. The suspects took the items belonging to the victim, re-entered the vehicle, and fled the area. The first suspect is described as a heavy set black male in his forties. He was wearing a light blue jean jacket and had a beard. The second suspect is described as a black male in his forties. He was wearing a black windbreaker jacket and a black hat. The third suspect is described as a black male in his forties, wearing a black t-shirt.

UPDATED: Missing Boy Found, Police Say

Earlier: Arlington County Police are calling in resources from Virginia State Police to help search for a missing 12-year-old boy.

Police say Eli Check, 12, was last seen early this morning at his home on the 3400 block of N. Emerson Street, near Williamsburg Middle School in the Rock Spring neighborhood.

Check, who is transgender and identifies as male, was last seen dying his hair black, according to police.

“We’re worried about his safety,” said ACPD spokesman Capt. Bruce Benson.

At least one K-9 unit is involved in the search of the neighborhood around the boy’s home, Benson confirmed. Police are also asking for the public’s help.

From a press release issued shortly after noon today:

The Arlington County Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a 12 year old boy. Eli Check of Arlington, was last seen at his home in the 3400 block of N. Emerson St. at 2 a.m. on Monday, October 24, 2016.

Eli was last seen in his home dying his hair black. He is white, weighing 85 lbs. and is 5’0″ tall.  He may be wearing light colored blue jeans with multiple, multi colored patches on the legs.

Eli is transgender, female to male, and it is possible he may present as a female. Eli’s legal name is Eliana Check.

Anyone who has information about Eli is asked to call the Arlington County Police Department immediately at 703-558-2222.

Gunston Could Get New Baseball Diamond — Arlington County officials are considering renovating a baseball diamond at Gunston Middle School, replacing it with a lighted artificial turf field. A public meeting about the project, is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 7-9 p.m. at the Gunston community center. [Arlington County]

TJ Elementary Design Approved — The Arlington School Board has unanimously approved schematic designs for the new elementary school planned for the Thomas Jefferson Middle School site. Pepper Spray Used to Break Up Large Fight at W-L Football Game

Police car (file photo)A large fight broke out at tonight’s Washington-Lee High School football game, prompting police to use pepper spray to disperse the crowd.

No significant injuries were reported, said Arlington County Police spokesman Capt. Bruce Benson. Those involved in the fight — students, reportedly — were evaluated but did not require medical treatment.

Washington-Lee’s football team was at home tonight, facing McLean High School. Police requested extra officers for security at the end of the game.

As of 9:45 p.m. no arrests had been made, Benson said.

Update at 11:55 a.m. — In addition to the fight during last night’s game, there was also a strong-arm robbery reported after the game. Police searched for the teenage suspect but were unable to locate him. The following email about the robbery was sent to the Cherrydale neighborhood listserv this morning.

My son was robbed after the Homecoming game at Washington Lee. It was right by the bike racks in front of the school on Stafford street, the guy asked for change for, and when my son took out the money to check, the boy snatched the money and ran, and when he yelled and tried to follow him, suddenly a group of the perpetrators friends showed up. I am glad the he did not engage, and instead went looking for a police officer.

The perpetrator had a Black Beanie cap, a grey sweatshirt, and blue jeans, he might have been only 15-16 years old. Even though only about $20 was snatched from my son, I hope the police follow up, as this totally is a sign of organized activity. Per police others were robbed last night as well.

ACPD to Collect Prescription Drugs in Take-Back Day Saturday

The Arlington County Police Department will accept the medicine, without any questions asked, as part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Saturday. The initiative is intended to help prevent prescription drug abuse, accidental ingestion and water contamination.

The fire stations, which will collect pills and patches from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, are at:

  • 500 S. Glebe Road
  • 4845 Lee Highway
  • 1900 S. Walter Reed Drive

“Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse,” an Arlington County news release says. “Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.”

Residents who can’t participate in the event should throw their medicine in the trash, according to the county.

Marine Corps Marathon to Close Arlington Streets

Driving and parking around Rosslyn, Crystal City and other parts of Arlington could become a particularly challenging experience later this month.

Several streets in the county are set to close to traffic for the 41st Marine Corps Marathon Sunday, Oct. 30.

The race is scheduled to start about 7:55 a.m. on Route 110 between the Pentagon and Arlington Memorial Drive. Thousands of people then are expected to run on a 26.2-mile course through Arlington and the District.

During the marathon, Crystal City is slated to have an all-day family party with moon bounces, face paintings and crafts. Rosslyn also is set to throw a finish festival with live music and a beer garden.

The Arlington County Police Department, Virginia State Police and Pentagon Force Protection Agency plan to close the following roads, starting at 3:30 a.m.:

Police: Man Finds Bullet Hole, Bullet in Home

Police car (file photo)A resident of Arlington’s Long Branch Creek neighborhood, near Pentagon City, found a bullet hole and a bullet inside his home last night, but it’s unclear from where it was fired.

The incident was reported around 10 p.m. on the 2400 block of 27th Court S. No injuries were reported.

From an Arlington County police crime report:

MISSILE INTO OCCUPIED DWELLING, 161019045, 2400 block of S. 27th Court. At approximately 10:00 p.m. on October 19, officers responded to the report of a late shots fired. Upon investigation, it was determined that a male victim found a bullet hole in the roof of a room inside his residence. A bullet was found on the floor nearby. A search of the residence and a check on the welfare were conducted in nearby residences. An origin of the bullet was unable to be located. The investigation is ongoing.

Separately, but around the same time, police responded to a report of someone shooting at people and homes with an airsoft gun in the Columbia Forest neighborhood, just north of Wakefield High School.

ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 161019048, 5200 block of S. 11th Street. At approximately 10:05 p.m. on October 19, an unknown subject(s) shot an air-soft firearm at a male victim and the surrounding houses in the neighborhood. The victim was uninjured and there was no damaged property found. There is no suspect(s) description. The investigation is ongoing.

Arlington Ridge Road Blocked Due to Downed Tree

A downed tree that’s resting on power lines along Arlington Ridge Road near S. Lang Street has prompted a temporary road closure.

Arlington Ridge Road is currently blocked between 23rd Street S. and S. Glebe Road while crews evaluate the situation and prepare to remove the tree.

Scanner reports suggest that the tree fell just as a bus of senior citizens was driving by. The bus  remained on the scene but no significant damage nor injuries were reported.

Crime Report: Used Car Haggling Goes Awry

Police car lightsA disagreement between a used car dealership employee and a customer turned heated last week.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon at a used car lot on Lee Highway, near Lyon Village.

Police say the customer eventually pulled a knife on the employee and “stole the keys to the vehicles on the lot.”

From an Arlington County Police Department crime report:

ROBBERY, 161015016, 2500 block of N. Lee Highway. At approximately 12:19 p.m. on October 15, officers responded to the report of male subject arguing with an employee over the sale of a vehicle. Upon investigation, it was determined that a male subject entered a business and following the verbal altercation, stole the keys to the vehicles on the lot. An employee confronted the subject and the subject pulled out a knife and charged at the employee. The employee was not injured and subject then fled the scene. Warrants were obtained for robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. The investigation is ongoing.
