Arlington Teen Charged in Quincy Street Crash

Arlington Police have charged an Arlington teenager with reckless driving after a crash yesterday morning near Washington-Lee High School.

Police say 18-year-old Joseph DiFilippo struck a woman and her dog with his pickup truck while they were walking northbound on N. Quincy Street. The woman, 29 28, remains in critical condition. The dog, a golden retriever, died at the scene.

DiFilippo has charged with reckless driving, failure to maintain proper control of a vehicle, driving without a license and violation of a learner’s permit. Police say the charges may be amended if the victim’s condition worsens. DiFilippo remained on the scene after the accident and cooperated with investigators, police say.

Arlington Police are asking anyone with information about the accident to call the department at 703-558-2222 or Detective Paul Marseilles at 703-228-4237.

Dump Truck Hits Traffic Light in Pentagon City

A dump truck reportedly hit a traffic light at the intersection of Army Navy Drive and South Hayes Street this afternoon.

The collision knocked the light from its pole, causing it to dangle precariously over the intersection by an electrical line. As of 1:30 p.m. a county light crew was working to repair the light as police directed traffic at the intersection. A backup quickly formed at the busy intersection, which also serves as a connector to I-395.

No word on whether police were able to find the dump truck that hit the light.

Crystal City Office Building Placed on Lockdown

There were some tense moments in Crystal City this morning as Arlington County and Pentagon Police surrounded an office building after receiving a false report of a man with a gun.

Police were originally dispatched to the scene for a report of an intoxicated military service member who was said to be brandishing a handgun in an office on the 2200 block of South Clark Street. One floor of the building was evacuated, employees sheltered in place on other floors and elevators were locked down.

One tipster said their office was told there was a “gunman” on the 9th floor of the Crystal Plaza 6 office building, and that employees were “safe” and “awaiting instructions from building security.”

Eventually, it was determined that the incident was not as serious as reported, and may have actually happened over the weekend. A suspect was reported to be in custody, but it’s not clear when he or she was arrested.

Update at 9:00 p.m. –Federal Protective Service spokesman Chris Ortman issued the following statement tonight:

This morning, Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers responded along with Arlington County Police, Pentagon Security, and Defense Protective Service, to a report filed today of an incident that took place on Friday, April 8, involving an armed, intoxicated individual at Crystal City Plaza 6, 2221 S. Clark Street, Arlington, Va. The individual was found and the weapon was confiscated without incident. An investigation is ongoing and more details will be shared when they are available.

Woman Injured, Dog Killed by Truck Near W-L High School

Update at 9:15 p.m. on 4/27/11 — The victim has succumbed to her injuries.

Update at 2:15 p.m. on 4/12/11 — The driver has been charged with reckless driving.

A young woman who was walking her dog was struck by a pickup truck this morning on the Quincy Street bridge over I-66, near Washington-Lee High School.

The accident happened in the northbound lanes around 7:30 a.m. The dog — a golden retriever — was killed and the woman — who was in her 20s — was taken to the hospital with critical injuries, according to Arlington Police spokeswoman Det. Crystal Nosal.

“The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene of the accident and cooperated with police,” police said in a statement this afternoon. Nosal said the driver of the truck was reported to be 19 18 years old. Police are still investigating the accident and it’s not clear whether charges will be filed against him.

A witness who drove past the scene after the accident said the driver of the truck looked “solemn” and said the dog was covered by a white sheet.

Unregistered Tour Buses Seized by Police

Police impounded five unregistered tour buses at Arlington National Cemetery on Wednesday.

The Hartford Courant reports that the buses, which took 250 eighth-graders from Connecticut to D.C. for a school trip, were operating without insurance or registration. One of the buses had a pair of bald tires, according to the paper.

The buses were impounded in the cemetery’s parking lot by U.S. Park Police and Arlington County police. School officials were eventually able to find other buses to pick the stranded students up from the cemetery.

Arlington First Responders Place First in Hockey Tourney

The team was formed less than two months ago, and they only got their jerseys the day before their first game, but Arlington cops and firefighters managed to take first place in a charity hockey tournament over the weekend,

The joint ACFD/ACPD team beat Montgomery County Fire (score: 5-1), D.C. Fire (score: 7-0) and Baltimore City Fire (twice) to win their division at the annual D.C. Firefighters Burn Foundation hockey tournament in Laurel, Md. They won 5-4 in overtime in the championship game against Baltimore City on Sunday.

Team organizer Sean Spencer says the 30-man roster contains people who have been playing ice hockey since they were kids and people who just took up the sport in the past couple of years. They had great chemistry on the ice, he said, despite only playing together as a team one time prior to the tournament.

“We’re pretty happy with the outcome,” Spencer said. “[The players] are ecstatic we got a team together and were successful at the level we were.”

Spencer says the D.C. and Baltimore fire teams have already asked for a rematch. To facilitate that, he’s planning on talking to Ballston’s Kettler Capitals Iceplex about setting up a charity tournament in a couple of months, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Crime Report: Creeps, Bigots and Car Chases Edition

In this week’s Arlington County crime report, a young man with a “baby face” exposed himself to a woman in Clarendon, followed her, and then ran off.

INDECENT EXPOSURE 04/05/11, 1000 block of N. Highland Street. On April 5 at 1 am, a woman was walking home when an unknown man jumped out from behind a tree. He exposed himself to her and followed her for a short time. The suspect is described as a white male around 20 years old, 5’8”, 140 lbs, with a “baby face”. He was wearing a dark sweater, jeans, and round gold framed glasses.

On Wednesday, March 30, a teenager in the Leeway Overlee area was spit on and called a racial slur by another teen.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY 03/30/11, 2400 block of N. Harrison Street. On March 30 at 5:25 pm, a teenager spit on the leg of another teenager and called him a racial slur. The suspect is described as a 17 year-old white male, 5’10” and 250 lbs. He was wearing jeans, a black baseball cap and black framed glasses.

Last Thursday two guys tried to flee from the police in the Penrose area. One of the suspects was caught and charged with pot possession and felony eluding.

ASSAULT ON POLICE-ARREST 03/31/11, 2300 block of S. 2nd Street. On March 31 at 2:30 am, police conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle drove off while the officers were touching the vehicle. The driver and passenger fled on foot and left their car at a dead end. One subject was apprehended. Raymond Harris, 39, of Danville, was charged with Possession of Marijuana and Conspiring to Commit Felony Eluding. He was held without bond.

Woman Who Attacked Painting Lived in Rosslyn

(Updated on 12/23/21 at 11:05 a.m.) The woman accused of trying to destroy a painting at the National Gallery of Art is apparently from Rosslyn.

Police say Susan [redacted], 53, tried to pull a painting (NSFW) called “Two Tahitian Women” off the wall, then started punching the painting. She later allegedly told police that the painter, French Post-Impressionist artist Paul Gauguin, was “evil,” that the painting was “very homosexual,” and that she was “trying to remove it.”

“I think it should be burned,” [redacted] said, according to a court document. She added: “I am from the American CIA and I have a radio in my head. I am going to kill you.”

[Redacted] is charged with second-degree theft and destruction of property. She is expected to appear in D.C. Superior Court today.

According to charging documents, [redacted] lives in the River Place residential complex (1111 Arlington Blvd) in Rosslyn. There’s some confusion about the geography, however, because the document erroneously places 1111 Arlington Blvd in Alexandria. Most news outlets are echoing that she’s from Alexandria, but [redacted] has at the very least lived in Arlington at one point. Court records from a 2006 assault charge say she lived in Arlington at the time. Furthermore, the address and apartment number listed in the charging document matches a White Pages listing for a “[redacted].”

Police Directing Traffic After Crash on Columbia Pike

Police are directing traffic at the intersection of Columbia Pike and S. Carlin Springs Road after a car crashed into a pole.

A black coupe suffered heavy front-end damage after slamming into the pole while heading eastbound on the Pike. Arlington firefighters were called in to help extricate the driver from the vehicle. The driver’s condition is not known at this time.

Stop lights are flashing at the intersection and Fairfax County police are directing traffic. Drivers should expect minor delays in the area.

Police Investigate Hit and Run Near Hospital

A hit and run accident sent three people to the hospital this morning.

The accident happened around lunch time on George Mason Drive, just north of Virginia Hospital Center. Initial reports suggest a van hit a sedan, sending the sedan into a pole. Three people who were in the car were brought to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the van reportedly fled the scene after the accident. Officers and a police dog searched for the driver, but were not able to find her. Shortly after the search was called off, a woman fitting the description of the van driver showed up at the scene and was searched by officers. No word on which charges, if any, will be filed.

Crime Report: Moped Mow Down Edition

If the Three Stooges were young and dealing drugs, the following crime report item might be the plot to one of their episodes.

ROBBERY/MALICIOUS WOUNDING-ARREST 03/24/11, 5000 block of Columbia Pike. On March 24 at 6:40 pm, two men decided to rob a subject they knew was selling narcotics. The subject assaulted the drug dealer and stole money and narcotics. When the assaulted subject saw them a short time later, he attempted to run them over with his moped. All three subjects were detained. One of the subjects was 17 years old and taken to juvenile detention. Norman Purvis, 18, of Arlington was charged with Conspiring to Commit Robbery, Robbery, and Possession of Marijuana. Deivi Coreas, 18, of Arlington was charged with Malicious Bodily Injury, Attempted Malicious Wounding, and Distribution of Marijuana. Both subjects were held without bond.
