Here’s an update on the blizzard statistics we’ve compiled today.

  • 11+ inches of fresh snow on the ground in South Arlington
  • 41 mile per hour wind gusts recorded at Reagan National Airport
  • 1,253 Dominion customers in Northern Virginia without power (at 5:20 PM)

Emergency calls in Arlington, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM:

  • 10 calls for downed trees, downed power lines, transformer fires, etc.
  • 5 calls for stuck vehicles, including a fire engine
  • 2 calls for women in labor

The Arlington Police Department is working extended, 12-hour shifts during the snow storm, which will increase the number of officers working at any given time. The department is also outfitting cruisers with tire chains and deploying four-wheel drive vehicles when possible, according to spokesperson Det. Crystal Nosal.

A large-scale emergency exercise will take place at the Rosslyn Metro on Saturday, Feb. 13. About 150 Arlington police and fire personnel, along with 50 volunteer victims, will participate in a simulated terrorist bombing of a Metrorail train in the tunnel between Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom.

Firefighters will use their recently-acquired Mobile Emergency Response Vehicles (MERVs) to travel through the tunnels. MERVs, which were used during the 2005 bombing of the London Underground, can reduce the time it takes first-responders to reach underground victims from 45 minutes to 4 minutes.

The exercise will take place between 9 AM and noon. The $1.2 million in funding for it came from a federal Homeland Security grant.

Rosslyn residents should take note that the Rosslyn and the Arlington Cemetery Metro stations will be closed throughout President’s Day weekend for a major track rehabilitation project. The closure will begin on Friday, Feb. 12 at 10 PM. The stations will reopen Tuesday morning.

A huge brawl broke out in the parking lot of a Falls Church nightclub early Monday morning, prompting a frantic call for backup from the first police officers on the scene.

Officers from Falls Church and from Arlington and Fairfax counties swarmed the parking lot after the call, which came in around 12:30 AM. Responding officers disbursed a crowd of several hundred people, according to Maj. Mary Gavin of the Falls Church Police Department.

An officer was assaulted during the scuffle and suffered minor injuries, but did not require hospitalization, Maj. Gavin said. There were no arrests.
